Cognitive impairment in Behçet's disease patients without overt neurological involvement
2003
We investigated the prevalence of cognitive impairment in patients with Behc¸et’s disease (BD) without overt neurological involvement. The influence of disease duration, disease activity, prednisone dosage, and anxiety and depression levels was evaluated. Twenty-six consecutive BD outpatients and 26 healthy controls matched for age, education and sex completed a comprehensive neuropsychological battery including tests of memory, visuospatial and constructional abilities, language, attention and psychomotor speed, non-verbal reasoning and executive functioning. The Hamilton scales for anxiety and depression were administered. Disease activity was assessed using the Behc¸et’s Disease Current …
Functional impairment in bipolar II disorder: Is it as disabling as bipolar I?
2010
It is well established that patients with bipolar disorder experience functional impairment even in remission. Nevertheless, bipolar II disorder remains understudied because most investigations to date include only bipolar I patients or just a small sample of bipolar II patients, without explicitly comparing both subtypes of disorder. The main objective of the current report is to evaluate overall and multiple domains of functioning, specifically in bipolar II disorder compared to patients with bipolar I disorder and healthy subjects.233 subjects from 3 groups were compared: bipolar I patients (n=106), bipolar II patients (n=66) and healthy controls (n=61). Bipolar patients meeting criteria…

Application of the Intermediate-Stage Subclassification to Patients With Untreated Hepatocellular Carcinoma
2015
OBJECTIVES:The Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) intermediate stage (BCLC B) includes a heterogeneous population of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Recently, in order to facilitate treatment decisions, a panel of experts proposed to subclassify BCLC B patients. In this study, we aimed to assess the prognostic capability of the BCLC B stage reclassification in a large cohort of patients with untreated HCC managed by the Italian Liver Cancer Group.METHODS:We assessed the prognosis of 269 untreated HCC patients observed in the period 1987-2012 who were reclassified according to the proposed subclassification of the BCLC B stage from stage B1 to stage B4. We evaluated and compa…
Evoked otoacoustic emissions and pure tone threshold audiometry in patients receiving cisplatinum therapy.
1993
Eight children and young adults with cancer were evaluated serially using pure tone audiometry as well as registration of click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAE) 1 day prior to therapy as well as after various numbers of doses of cisplatinum. A reduction of EOAE-amplitudes following cisplatinum therapy was observed in all patients. This reduction tended to recover after the end of cisplatinum administration. Since EOAE are believed to result from cochlear bio-mechanical processes, the reduced emissions are interpreted as signs of cochlear dysfunction. We conclude, that EOAE testing may be a simple, non-invasive method that may detect early, transient functional impairment of hearing due t…
Symptom-Triggered versus Standard Chlormethiazole Treatment of Inpatient Alcohol Withdrawal: Clinical Implications from a Chart Analysis
2003
To evaluate clinical effectiveness and safety of 2 different detoxification treatment protocols, a chart analysis of hospital inpatients consecutively admitted for alcohol withdrawal during one year was undertaken. Records of 33 patients receiving symptom-triggered treatment (using a modified version of the revised Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol Scale) were compared with those of patients treated by applying a fixed-dose regimen (n = 32). Patients (45.3 ± 9.8 years, 21% female) of both groups were comparable regarding illness severity, epidemiologic parameters as well as complications during the observed treatment period. Under symptom-triggered therapy, chlormethiazol…
Wilson's disease in Spain: validation of sources of information used by the Rare Diseases Registries
2021
The effects of informed consent format on preoperative anxiety in patients undergoing inferior third molar surgery
2013
Objectives: To evaluate the effect of informed consent format on preoperative anxiety of patients. Material and Methods: We performed a prospective study (91 patients) undergoing lower third molar extraction. Patients were distributed into three groups. Informed consent for surgery was obtained through a written document, an oral interview or a video recording. Afterwards, patients were asked about their anxiety level and the effect the informed consent had had on it. Results: Whereas the information conveyed both in oral and written formats relieved the patient to some extent (in a scale of -3 to +3) 0.97±1.21 and 0.29±0.97, respectively), the video recording increased patient’s anxiety in…
Cigarette Smoking Status at Diagnosis and Recurrence in Intermediate-risk Nonemuscle-invasive Bladder Carcinoma
2013
Objective To study the effect of smoking status at diagnosis on recurrence in intermediate-risk non–muscle-invasive bladder carcinoma treated by transurethral resection (TUR) of the bladder and early intravesical chemotherapy. Methods Tumor characteristics and smoking status were recorded in 395 patients entered in a randomized multicenter trial comparing 2 different schedules of early intravesical chemotherapy. All patients received intravesical epirubicin (80 mg/50 mL) within 6 hours after TUR, followed by 5 more weekly instillations with (arm B) or without (arm A) monthly instillations for 1 year. Smoking habit was investigated at diagnosis through a structured questionnaire. Multivariat…
