Symbolic Domination and Active Power: Femal Roles in Criminal Organizations,

2007

The article is focused on analysing the role of female figures in the mafia criminal organizations. Starting from a comparative analysis of the ways in which - over time - have changed the forms of manifestation of the female power and the male domination in specific criminal contexts (especially in the Cosa Nostra, but not only), we will consider the dialectic of visibility/invisibility, appearance/reality behind which hides the need to respond to the cliché for which the women must be strong but must appear weak; at the same time we will try to understand what are the forms of materialization of women’s power in these contexts and which are the circumstances that make possible their legit…

Sex roles and sex ratios in animals

2022

In species with separate sexes, females and males often differ in their morphology, physiology and behaviour. Such sex-specific traits are functionally linked to variation in reproductive competition, mate choice and parental care, which have all been linked to sex roles. At the 150th anniversary of Darwin's theory on sexual selection, the question of why patterns of sex roles vary within and across species remains a key topic in behavioural and evolutionary ecology. New theoretical, experimental and comparative evidence suggests that variation in the adult sex ratio (ASR) is a key driver of variation in sex roles. Here, we first define and discuss the historical emergence of the sex role c…

The clinical relevance of low-density-lipoproteins size modulation by statins.

2006

The predominance of small, dense low density lipoproteins (LDL) has been accepted as an emerging cardiovascular risk factor by the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III; in fact, LDL size seems to be an important predictor of cardiovascular events and progression of coronary heart disease. Several studies have also shown that the therapeutical modulation of LDL size is of great benefit in reducing the risk of cardiovascular events. Hypolipidemic treatment is able to alter LDL subclass distribution and statins are currently the most widely used lipid-lowering agents. Statins are potent inhibitors of hydroxy-methyl-glutaryl-coenzyme A reductase, the rate-limiting en…

Sunitinib in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma after progression under sorafenib treatment.

2010

Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of sunitinib in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after progression under sorafenib treatment. Methods: Sunitinib was administered at 37.5 mg daily (4-weeks-on/2-weeks-off schedule) after progression under sorafenib treatment. Adverse events (AEs) were assessed using NCI-CTCAE v3.0, and tumor response was evaluated according to RECIST. Data were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Eleven patients with metastatic disease were treated. Seven patients (64%) presented with no liver cirrhosis, including 3 patients with a history of liver transplantation. The first radiologic…

La costruzione tian (tun) + infinito nel dialetto tedesco di Merano*

2012

This article deals with the 'do-support' phenomenon in the German Tyrolean dialect spoken in Merano/Meran (Northern Italy). We show that it is used in various contexts, which do not correspond to the contexts in which English resorts to do-support. In some of these contexts the do-support is obligatory, while in others it is optional.

Pyrocoll, an Antibiotic, Antiparasitic and Antitumor Compound Produced by a Novel Alkaliphilic Streptomyces Strain

2003

A new secondary metabolite was detected in the culture extract of Streptomyces sp. AK 409 by HPLC-diode-array screening. The metabolite was identified as pyrocoll, which is known to be a constituent of cigarette smoke. Pyrocoll is known as a synthetic compound, but until now had not been isolated as a natural product from a microorganism. The compound showed biological activity against various Arthrobacter strains, filamentous fungi, several pathogenic protozoa, and some human tumor cell lines.

Pyrrolomycins as antimicrobial agents. Microwave-assisted organic synthesis and insights into their antimicrobial mechanism of action

2019

Abstract New compounds able to counteract staphylococcal biofilm formation are needed. In this study we investigate the mechanism of action of pyrrolomycins, whose potential as antimicrobial agents has been demonstrated. We performed a new efficient and easy method to use microwave organic synthesis suitable for obtaining pyrrolomycins in good yields and in suitable amount for their in vitro in-depth investigation. We evaluate the inhibitory activity towards Sortase A (SrtA), a transpeptidase responsible for covalent anchoring in Gram-positive peptidoglycan of many surface proteins involved in adhesion and in biofilm formation. All compounds show a good inhibitory activity toward SrtA, havi…

Pyrrolomycins as potential anti-staphylococcal biofilms agents

2010

With the goal of discovering new anti-infective agents active against microbial biofilms, this investigation focused on some natural pyrrolomycins, a family of halogenated pyrrole antibiotics. In this study the anti-staphylococcal biofilm activity of pyrrolomycins C, D, F1, F2a, F2b, F3 and of the synthesized related compounds I, II, III were investigated. The susceptibility of six staphylococcal biofilms was determined by methyltiazotetrazolium staining. Most of the compounds were active at concentrations of 1.5 microg ml(-1) with significant inhibition percentages. A few of the compounds were active at the lowest screening concentration of 0.045 microg ml(-1). The population log reduction…

Bioactive pyrrole alkaloids isolated from the Red Sea : marine sponge Stylissa carteri

2017

Abstract Fifteen pyrrole alkaloids were isolated from the Red Sea marine sponge Stylissa carteri and investigated for their biological activities. Four of them were dibrominated [(+) dibromophakelline, Z-3-bromohymenialdisine, (±) ageliferin and 3,4-dibromo-1H-pyrrole-2-carbamide], nine compounds were monobrominated [(−) clathramide C, agelongine, (+) manzacidin A, (−) 3-bromomanzacidin D, Z-spongiacidin D, Z-hymenialdisine, 2-debromostevensine, 2-bromoaldisine and 4-bromo-1H-pyrrole-2-carbamide)] and finally, two compounds were non-brominated derivatives viz., E-debromohymenialdisine and aldisine. The structure elucidations of isolated compounds were based on 1D & 2D NMR spectroscopic …

Annelated pyrrolo-pyrimidines from amino-cyanopyrroles and BMMAs as leads for new DNA-interactive ring systems.

2005

The efficient one-pot synthesis of several new tricyclic systems of type 1 and 2, obtained from the reaction of substituted 2-amino-3-cyanopyrroles and 3-amino-4-cyanopyrroles with BMMAs, is reported. The duration and yields of the reaction strongly depend on the reactivity of the starting pyrrole and on the size of the ring to be formed. Mechanist features of the reaction were investigated and proposed by studying also the reactivity of a 3-aminopyrrole-2,4-dicyano substituted. The method reported represents the first example of the use of BMMA reagents in combination with pyrrole derivatives and allows an easy and versatile entry to a large number of hitherto unknown pyrrolo-pyrimidines f…
