Influence of metal–support interaction on the surface structure of gold nanoclusters deposited on native SiOx/Si substrates

2014

The structure of small gold nanoclusters (R ~ 2.5 nm) deposited on different silica on silicon substrates is investigated using several characterization techniques (AFM, XRD, EXAFS and GISAXS). The grain morphology and the surface roughness of the deposited gold clusters are determined by AFM. The in-plane GISAXS intensity is modelled in order to obtain information about the cluster size and the characteristic length scale of the surface roughness. AFM and GISAXS results are in excellent agreement and show that the surface morphology of the deposited clusters depends on whether defect-rich (native) or defect-free (thermal) silica is used as a substrate. Gold clusters show a strong tendency …

Influence of surface roughness in hydrological response of semiarid catchments

2005

Abstract Here, an investigation has been carried out in order to understand the influence of the surface roughness in the definition of the hydrological response of semiarid catchments. Following a previous study of one of the authors, a modified version of TOPMODEL is used, in which the convolution routing procedure has been extended to the hillslopes by specifying the routing velocity for each pixel of the watershed. These velocities have been linked to the watershed land use through the different surface roughness whose coefficients has been derived on the basis of Engman's table. In this paper, roughness coefficient distributions are expressed as function of a unique value treated as a …

Aluminium-steel plating by press welding

2021

A series of researches related to aluminium-steel plating by press welding are presented in the paper. In this sense, the influence of the roughness of the aluminium and steel test samples was taken into account, but also of the post-welding heat treatment on the characteristics of the joints made. S355 steel specimens and AlMgSi0.7 F27 aluminium specimens were analyzed. The samples were processed and roughness Ra = 2.51-51.09 µm were obtained. Also, after making the joints, a postwelding heat treatment was applied which consisted of a heating at a temperature of 425 °C with a duration of 6.5 hours and a slow cooling to room temperature. Six distinct samples were made in terms of surface ro…

Incidence Angle Diversity on L-Band Microwave Radiometry and Its Impact on Consistent Soil Moisture Retrievals

2021

Incidence angle diversity of space-borne L-band radiometers needs to be taken into account for a consistent estimation of surface soil moisture (SM). In this study, the Land Parameter Retrieval Model (LPRM) is applied to SMOS brightness temperatures to calibrate the effective scattering albedo (w) and the soil roughness (h 1 ) parameter against ERA5-land SM. The analysis is carried out for SMOS data at three different incidence angles ( 32.5±5∘, 42.5±5∘ and 52.5±5∘ ) focusing in 2016 on the three main land cover types of the Iberian Peninsula according to the Climate Change Initiative (agricultural, forest and grassland). The parameterization shows an increasing trend of w and h 1 with rise…

Analyzing the impact of using the SRP (Simplified roughness parameterization) method on soil moisture retrieval over different regions of the globe

2015

International audience; This paper focuses on a new approach to account for soil roughness effects in the retrieval of soil moisture (SM) at L-band in the framework of the SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission: the Simplified Roughness Parameterization (SRP). While the classical retrieval approach considers SM and τ nad (vegetation optical depth) as retrieved parameters, this approach is based on the retrieval of SM and the TR parameter combining τ nad and soil roughness (TR τ nad + Hr /2). Different roughness parameterizations were tested to find the best correlation (R), bias and unbiased RMSE (ubRMSE) when comparing homogeneous retrievals of SM and in situ SM measurements carri…

On the topographic and energetic surface modifications induced by laser treatment of metallic substrates before plasma spraying

2003

Abstract Laser surface cleaning has been proven as a very suitable technique for the substitution of some surface preparation steps, such as wet cleaning and grit blasting. The mechanisms involved in short pulsed laser ablation include the absorption of the laser light and conversion into heat via collisional processes. Ejection of matter is achieved either by direct vaporization or hydrodynamical sputtering. This article aims at clarifying the laser–matter interaction mechanisms and effects on metallic materials for different surfaces initial roughness and laser beam energy densities. Both topographic and energetic modifications are investigated by SEM observations, roughness characterizat…

Vine leaf roughness estimation by image processing

2013

International audience; The application of plant protection product has an important role in agricultural production processes. With current pesticides management, a huge amount of them are applied to worldwide orchards. In precision spraying, spray application efficiency depends on the pesticide application method, the phytosanitary product as well as the leaf surface properties. For environmental and economic reasons, the global trend is to reduce the pesticide application rate of the few approved active substances. Under these constraints, one of the challenges is to improve the efficiency of pesticide application. Different parameters can influence pesticide application such as nozzle t…

Effect of 15% carbamide peroxide bleaching gel on color stability of giomer and microfilled composite resin: an in vitro comparison

2011

Objectives: The effect of 15% carbamide peroxide bleaching gel on color stability and surface topography of a giomer and a microfilled composite resin was evaluated in the present in vitro study. Study design: Forty discs measuring 10 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness were prepared from a giomer and a microfilled composite resin. Each material yielded 20 discs with completely smooth surfaces. Then a spectrophotometer was used to measure L* (lightness), a* (redness, greenness) and b* (blueness, yellowness) color coordinates of all the discs. Subsequently, the specimens were subjected to 15% carbamide peroxide bleaching gel. After measuring the color coordinates once again, color changes (…

Dimensional control of metallic objects by artificial vision: contribution to lighting condition studies

1999

We present an original method that enables real time automatic dimensional control of defects on metallic objects. The method is based on the theoretical and experimental study of light reflection mechanisms that can be seen as a function of the surface roughness and of the light source size. We show that it is possible to reconstruct the profile of an object from a single gray level image. An industrial application enables us to validate our results. Finally, an error computation fixes the limits of our method and enables us to better understand illumination problems.
