Argumentation and proving in multicultural classes: a linguistic-cultural approach with Chinese students
2009
The paper explores, through different theoretical/experimental investigations, a particular complex field of study such as the analysis of the teaching/learning phases in a multicultural setting in class. Through a linguistic-cultural approach it is a further close examination on the didactic thematic related to a possible comparison between East and West and particularly between Chinese mathematical thought and Italian thought, in some particular aspects related to the phase of argumentation and proving. To carry out the research, we chose to investigate, in a qualitative and quantitative way, the behaviour of Chinese and Italian students of different ages (13-15 years old) attending the S…

Presence of Naraoia Walcott, 1912 in the middle Cambrian of Europe (Murero, NE Spain).
2018
Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la página web de la revista en la siguiente URL: http://sepaleontologia.es/revista/anteriores/SJP%20(2018)%20vol.%2033/vol.%201/04.pdf The genus Naraoia Walcott, 1912, a Burgess Shale-type fossil known from the lower and middle Cambrian of British Columbia (Canada), Idaho and Utah (USA), as well as from Yunnan and Guizhou provinces (China), is now reported from the middle Cambrian of Murero (Zaragoza, Spain), which is the first record in the Acadobaltic province. The only fragmented specimen found is determined as Naraoia sp., its age being Pardailhania multispinosa Zone (Drumian Stage). This new datum reinforces the hypothesis of the existence of a …

An active form of sphingosine kinase-1 is released in the extracellular medium as component of membrane vesicles shed by two human tumor cell line.
2010
Expression of sphingosine kinase-1 (SphK-1) correlates with a poor survival rate of tumor patients. This effect is probably due to the ability of SphK-1 to be released into the extracellular medium where it catalyzes the biosynthesis of sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), a signaling molecule endowed with profound proangiogenic effects. SphK-1 is a leaderless protein which is secreted by an unconventional mechanism. In this paper, we will show that in human hepatocarcinoma Sk-Hep1 cells, extracellular signaling is followed by targeting the enzyme to the cell surface and parallels targeting of FGF-2 to the budding vesicles. We will also show that SphK-1 is present in a catalitycally active form i…
The Sound of Emotion
2014
What is the effect of performers’ experienced emotions on the auditory characteristics of their performances? By asking performers to play a music phrase in response to three different instructions we attempted to answer this question. Performers were instructed to do the following: 1) play while focusing on the technical aspects of their playing; 2) give an expressive performance; and 3) focus on their experienced emotions, prior to which they were subjected to a sadness-inducing mood induction task. Performers were interviewed after each playing condition. We analyzed the tempo, articulation, dynamics, timbre, and vibrato of the performances obtained as well as the interview data. A focus…
An ANN model to correlate roughness and structural performance in asphalt pavements
2017
Abstract In this paper, using a large database from the Long Term Pavement Performance program, the authors developed an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to estimate the structural performance of asphalt pavements from roughness data. Considering advantages of modern high-performance survey devices in the acquisition of road pavement functional parameters, it would be of practical significance if the structural state of a pavement could be estimated from its functional conditions. To differentiate various road section conditions, several significant input parameters, related to traffic, weather, and structural aspects, have been included in the analysis. The results are very interesting and …
Recent advances in machine learning for maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) prediction : A review
2022
Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) is the maximum amount of oxygen attainable by a person during exercise. VO2 max is used in different domains including sports and medical sciences and is usually measured during an incremental treadmill or cycle ergometer test. The drawback of directly measuring VO2 max using the maximal test is that it is expensive and requires a fixed and controlled protocol. During the last decade, various machine learning models have been developed for VO2 max prediction and numerous studies have attempted to predict VO2 max using data from submaximal and non-exercise tests. This article gives an overview of the machine learning models developed over the past five years (…
Microstructural Study of Asphalt Mixture Containing Reclaimed Material
2012
In this paper mixing of reclaimed material with virgin asphalt material has been studied non-destructively. Specimens prepared with virgin asphalt mix and with asphalt mix containing reclaimed material were scanned in X-ray Computed tomography (CT). The obtained Images were analysed for particles and pores (air voids) distribution. All the specimens were also tested in compression test and X-ray scanned while testing. It was found that distribution of reclaimed is not uniform through the samples. There is no considerable effect of increasing the mixing time on particles' distribution. Similar trend of increase in air voids (cracks) with the increase in load was found for both virgin mix and…
