Two-loop electroweak corrections to the ρ parameter beyond the leading approximation

1996

We show that in the framework of the pinch technique the universal part of the $\rho$ parameter can be meaningfully defined, beyond one loop. The universal part so obtained satisfies the crucial requirements of gauge-independence, finiteness, and process-independence, even when subleading contributions of the top quark are included. The mechanism which enforces the aforementioned properties is explained in detail, and several subtle field theoretical issues are discussed. Explicit calculations of the sub-leading two-loop corrections of order $O(G_{\mu}^{2}m^{2}_{t}M_{Z}^{2})$ are carried out in the context of an $SU(2)$ model, with $M_{W}=M_{Z}$, and various intermediate and final results a…

Considerations concerning the renormalization of the electroweak sector of the standard model

1990

Abstract Examination of the structure of one-loop corrected amplitudes for arbitrary processes mediated by W, Z and γ in the simple renormalization framework previously discussed by the author, leads to natural choices for the renormalized self-energies and vertex corrections. They satisfy simple renormalization conditions and, as q2 → 0, the W and Z propagators approach the free expressions with a correction of O(αq2/mW2). The renormalization conditions allow us to circumvent certain ambiguities that arise, to O(α2), in current analyses of Δr and κ(q2). A useful simplified form for the Z propagator is presented.

Race profiles of rowers during the 2014 Youth Olympic Games

2016

Aim: Strategy plays a relevant role. The purpose of this study was to analyze the race profiles of youth athletes competing at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games over a distance of 1000-m. Methods: According to the competition outcome of sculling and sweep events, 48 male and 48 female youth (17–18 years) rowers were divided in medallist (W), not medallist (NW), qualified (Q) and not qualified (NQ) athletes. Time at 0–500 m (T1) and 500–1000 m (T2) was considered. The average speed for T1 and T2 were normalized in relation to the average speed of the whole race. ANOVA for repeated measures was applied to performance 1xJ and 2-J during qualifying: 2 (sex: females vs. males) 9 2 (outcome: qualified…

L'Atleta di Segesta. Una statuetta di discobolo dal santuario di Contrada Mango

2019

The review of the unpublished material from the excavations conducted in the 1950-60s, of the Sanctuary of Contrada Mango at Segesta, led to the find of a statuette of an athlete. The piece, which, to our knowledge, is unique in its kind, is rendered in a gray stone of uncertain provenance. The first part of the article presents the context of the statuette, found in close proximity to the north wall of the temenos. The second part describes and gives a detailed analysis of the statuette as regards its style and iconography. The male figure with the head and torso intact suggests, from the rendering of the pectoral and back muscles and right shoulder stance with the conveyed weight distribu…

First-Principles Calculation of Electroweak Box Diagrams from Lattice QCD.

2020

We present the first realistic lattice QCD calculation of the $\gamma W$-box diagrams relevant for beta decays. The nonperturbative low-momentum integral of the $\gamma W$ loop is calculated using a lattice QCD simulation, complemented by the perturbative QCD result at high momenta. Using the pion semileptonic decay as an example, we demonstrate the feasibility of the method. By using domain wall fermions at the physical pion mass with multiple lattice spacings and volumes, we obtain the axial $\gamma W$-box correction to the semileptonic pion decay, $\Box_{\gamma W}^{VA}\big|_{\pi}=2.830(11)_{\mathrm{stat}}(26)_{\mathrm{sys}}\times10^{-3}$, with the total uncertainty controlled at the leve…

Bayesian Analysis of a Future Beta Decay Experiment's Sensitivity to Neutrino Mass Scale and Ordering

2021

Bayesian modeling techniques enable sensitivity analyses that incorporate detailed expectations regarding future experiments. A model-based approach also allows one to evaluate inferences and predicted outcomes, by calibrating (or measuring) the consequences incurred when certain results are reported. We present procedures for calibrating predictions of an experiment's sensitivity to both continuous and discrete parameters. Using these procedures and a new Bayesian model of the $\beta$-decay spectrum, we assess a high-precision $\beta$-decay experiment's sensitivity to the neutrino mass scale and ordering, for one assumed design scenario. We find that such an experiment could measure the el…

Can the 20 and 60 s All-Out Test Predict the 2000 m Indoor Rowing Performance in Athletes?

2022

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to look for a new, simple, and fast method of assessing and monitoring indoor race performance and to assess the relationship between 20 s, 60 s, and 2000 m indoor rowing performances of youth rowers to evaluate their anaerobic profile. Methods: For three consecutive days, 17 young able-bodied male rowers (15.8 +/- 2.0 years), performed three tests (20 s, 60 s, and 2000 m) on a rowing ergometer. Mean power (W-20, W-60, and W-2000) and 2000 m time (t(2000)) were considered for the analysis. In addition, 14 athletes (15-18 years) performed a 20 s, 60 s, and 2000 m tests and used this as a control group. To define the anaerobic profile of the athletes, W-2…

First-forbidden transitions in reactor antineutrino spectra

2019

© 2019 American Physical Society. We study the dominant forbidden transitions in the antineutrino spectra of the fission actinides from 4 MeV onward using the nuclear shell model. Through explicit calculation of the shape factor, we show the expected changes in cumulative electron and antineutrino spectra. Relative to the allowed approximation this results in a minor decrease of electron spectra above 4 MeV, whereas an increase of several percent is observed in antineutrino spectra. We show that forbidden transitions dominate the spectral flux for most of the experimentally accessible range. Based on the shell model calculations we attempt a parametrization of forbidden transitions and prop…
