Rīgas Dabaspētnieku biedrības 50 gadu jubilejas piemiņas ēdienkarte

2020

In 1895, the oldest Latvian Society of Naturalists, the Riga Society of Naturalists (1845 – 1939), celebrated its 50th anniversary. The celebrations also included a social event with a feast, in memory of which a humorous menu based on geological eras was issued. The article provides an insight into both the menu and the society's anniversary celebrations.

Bloqueo interescalénico guiado por ecografía en un paciente con alteraciones anatómicas de la región supraclavicular secundarias a radioterapia y cir…

2011

Regional blocks can be difficult in surgical patients with certain superficial anatomical abnormalities. Such blocks may be possible, however, under ultrasound guidance. We report a case in which a man with a fractured right humerus required an ultrasound-guided interscalene brachial plexus block. Secondary to radiotherapy, the patient had right cervical and facial abnormalities that had altered the location of external anatomical landmarks. We describe the approach used to insert the catheter and the exploration of the region by ultrasound. Nerve stimulation was not used to avoid painful contractions. Analgesia was excellent during surgery and over the following 24 hours.

Generation Z and Organizational Listening on Social Media

2020

Young people are avid users of social media and have appeared as a powerful force for social change, as shown by the ranks of those who have joined Greta Thunberg in the global climate movement. In addition to challenging political institutions and governments, young people today are also holding the corporate world accountable. To respond to young people’s expectations, brands, and organizations have turned to social media to interact and build relationships with them. However, critics have lamented that these attempts often fail and that young people’s trust in institutions, brands, and organizations continues to decline. This article asks how young people perceive organizational listenin…

A bibliometric analysis of the literature on non-financial information reporting: Review of the research and network visualization

2022

[EN] This paper presents a bibliometric analysis of articles on the topic of non-financial information (NFI) reporting. The exponential growth over the last decade (90% of the articles were published in the last 10 years) indicates the relevance of the topic, but little is known about the structure and extent of research in this academic field. The purpose of this article is to provide a structured and up-to-date picture of the state of the art on the topic. We analyse the most relevant articles, authors, journals, countries and organizations. The analysis includes 3113 articles, collected from the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection from 1970 —when the first two articles on the topic were…

Der Gaius der Preußen

2011

The discovery of the Palimpsest of the Gaius' Institutions in 1816 occurred at the height of palimpsest research and is part of a broader controversy among German and Italian scholars at that time. The deciphering of the lower stratum of the palimpsest and its first publication was supported by the Preußische Akademie der Wissenschaften and was considered as a product of German intellectual spirit. The transcriptions were transferred to the Akademie der Wissenschaften and later to the Königliche Bibliothek of Berlin. Today they are preserved in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. They still constitute an indispensable basis for the constitutio textus of Gaius' Institutions.

Analysis of the RET, GDNF, EDN3, and EDNRB genes in patients with intestinal neuronal dysplasia and Hirschsprung disease

2001

BACKGROUNDHirschsprung disease (HSCR) is a frequent congenital disorder with an incidence of 1 in 5000 live births, characterised by the absence of parasympathetic intramural ganglion cells in the hindgut resulting in intestinal obstruction in neonates and severe constipation in infants and adults. Intestinal neuronal dysplasia (IND) shares clinical features with HSCR but the submucosal parasympathetic plexus is affected. IND has been proposed as one of the most frequent causes of chronic constipation and is often associated with HSCR.METHODSWe examined 29 patients diagnosed with sporadic HSCR, 20 patients with IND, and 12 patients with mixed HSCR/IND for mutations in the coding regions of …

Etiopathological aspects of achalasia: lessons learned with Hirschsprung's disease

2011

SUMMARY The etiology of primary esophageal achalasia is largely unknown. There is increasing evidence that genetic alterations might play an important but underestimated role. Current knowledge of the genetic base of Hirschsprung's disease in contrast is far more detailed. The two enteric neuropathies have several clinical features in common. This association may also exist on a cellular and molecular level. The aim of this review is to enlighten those etiopathogenetic concepts of Hirschsprung's disease that seem to be useful in uncovering the pathological processes causing achalasia. Three aspects are looked at: (i) the genetic base of Hirschsprung's disease, particularly its major suscept…

Prevalence of Strabismus and Its Impact on Vision-Related Quality of Life

2020

Purpose This study investigates the prevalence of manifest strabismus and its subtypes in adulthood and analyzes the risk factors and its impact on vision-related quality of life (VRQoL). Design The Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) is a population-based, observational cohort study. A cross-sectional analysis of the baseline examination was conducted. Participants Participants aged 35 to 74 years were included (n = 15  010). Methods All participants were examined with a comprehensive ophthalmologic and general examination including the Hirschberg corneal reflex test to detect manifest strabismus. The following risk factors were analyzed: age, sex, socioeconomic status, birth weight, maternal age…

EU transition in power sector: How RES affects the design and operations of transmission power systems

2019

In the past, much of Europe's electricity grid network has been designed in consideration of the locations of conventional generation plants. However, a large share of today's renewables production – notably variable wind and solar – does not correspond to this grid architecture. Interconnectors, in addition to internal infrastructure, are key to creating new electricity corridors to connect areas of surplus to areas of scarcity. In this context, in 2014 the European Council, in recognizing that a fundamental role of transmission infrastructure is to enable the integration of areas of high renewable energy potential with main consumption areas, endorsed the proposal by the European Commissi…
