Latex allergy: the sum quantity of four major allergens shows the allergenic potential of medical gloves
2007
Background: Assessment of allergenic potential of medical devices made of natural rubber latex (NRL) requires the measurement of concentrations of specific allergenic proteins or polypeptides eluting from rubber. Methods: Four NRL allergens (Hev b 1, 3, 5, and 6.02) were quantified in all medical glove brands marketed in Finland in 1999, 2001, and 2003 (n = 208) by a capture enzyme immunoassay. The results were compared with those obtained from previous nationwide market surveys, using a skin prick test-validated human IgE-based ELISA-inhibition method. Results: A high overall correlation (r = 0.87, 95% CI 0.83–0.90) emerged between the sum values of the four allergens(μg/g glove) and Ig…
Towards identifying drug side effects from social media using active learning and crowd sourcing.
2019
Motivation Social media is a largely untapped source of information on side effects of drugs. Twitter in particular is widely used to report on everyday events and personal ailments. However, labeling this noisy data is a difficult problem because labeled training data is sparse and automatic labeling is error-prone. Crowd sourcing can help in such a scenario to obtain more reliable labels, but is expensive in comparison because workers have to be paid. To remedy this, semi-supervised active learning may reduce the number of labeled data needed and focus the manual labeling process on important information. Results We extracted data from Twitter using the public API. We subsequently use Ama…
Histological and morphometric study of the components of the sinus and atrioventricular nodes in horses and dogs
2019
Abstract The cardiac nodes are the source of the electrical impulse that is transmitted to the heart, the aim of this work is study the histological and morphometric characteristics of the different components of the sinus and atrioventricular nodes in horses and dogs that help to know the physiopathology of these nodes. A group of ten horse hearts and five dog hearts were used. The region of the sinus and atrioventricular nodes was sectioned serially, and the block of tissue removed for study. The samples were assessed using a morphometric analysis with the Image-Pro Plus 7.1 software and the acquisition of the images using a Leica DMD108 optic microscope. The shape of the horse's sinus no…

The training of specialists in Family and Community Health Nursing according to the supervisors of the teaching units
2016
Abstract Objective To analyse the current situation of the training of specialists in family and community nursing from the perspective of nurses responsible for teaching units. Methods Exploratory analysis using nominal group technique of the contributions made by representatives of 19 multidisciplinary teaching units in family and community care from 11 Spanish autonomous communities. They categorised and weighted those contributions. Results The emerging categories on the strengths and difficulties encountered related to the tutors, the environment where the training took place, the structure of the teaching unit, the organisation of the teaching and the official programme of the special…
Speech practices that facilitate patient participation in health counselling - A way to empowerment?
2003
Objective This study described nurse-patient communication during health counselling and focused on the linguistic realisations of empowering speech practices that emphasised patient participation. It aimed at a description of nurses' speech practices that facilitated the inclusion of patients' perspectives and preferences and encouraged patients to express themselves. Design and setting Thirty-eight videotaped nurse-patient health- counselling sessions that were conducted in a hospital were transcribed verbatim. Method The analysis of the videotaped data was based on the adaptation of Conversation Analysis (CA) and was carried out on a turn-by-turn basis. Results The research material rev…
Client’s role and participation in stroke physiotherapy encounters: an observational study
2016
AbstractClient participation is a basic principle in rehabilitation encounters. Coping at home after stroke requires self-confidence and autonomy, which can be enhanced by active collaboration and knowledge sharing. Earlier studies show, however, that clients are not always offered the role of an active participant in physiotherapy practice. A contradiction remains between official rhetoric and clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to investigate the interaction between the client and the physiotherapist in stroke rehabilitation sessions. Eight video-recorded treatment sessions were observed after an educational intervention that focused on client participation. Discourse analysi…
Teacher preparation for inclusion in Norway: a study of beliefs, skills, and intended practices
2017
ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the educational experiences of teacher education students and their attitudes towards planning and making adaptations for children with learning disabilities in inclusive classrooms. Participants comprised pre-service teachers in the second and fourth years of teacher preparation at a major Norwegian university. Fourth-year students were completing a 1-year elective in special education (n = 34) or coursework in other subjects (n = 30). Second-year students were grouped based on their intention to take special education (n = 26) or other coursework (n = 62). Participants rated their beliefs, skills, and intended practices…
Modeling of biomass smoke injection into the lower stratosphere by a large forest fire (Part II): Sensitivity studies
2006
Abstract. The Chisholm forest fire that burned in Alberta, Canada, in May 2001 resulted in injection of substantial amounts of smoke into the lower stratosphere. We used the cloud-resolving plume model ATHAM (Active Tracer High resolution Atmospheric Model) to investigate the importance of different contributing factors to the severe intensification of the convection induced by the Chisholm fire and the subsequent injection of biomass smoke into the lower stratosphere. The simulations show strong sensitivity of the pyro-convection to background meteorology. This explains the observed coincidence of the convective blow-up of the fire plume and the passage of a synoptic cold front. Furthermor…
Psychological predictors of homophobic bullying among adolescents and young adults: The role of parental psychological control and sensation seeking
2021
AbstractWe aimed to investigate the relationship between homophobic bullying, parental psychological control and sensation seeking among adolescents and young adults and to examine the mediating role of sensation seeking. The participants included 394 adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 20 years attending the 3rd, 4th and 5th years of two public high schools in Italian cities. Participants completed the Homophobic Bullying Scale, the Dependency—oriented and Achievement—oriented Parental Psychological Control, and the Sensation—Seeking Scale. The results showed that parental psychological control predicted bullying toward gay and lesbian people. However, the two dimensions of sensation s…
