The THESEUS space mission concept: science case, design and expected performances

2018

THESEUS is a space mission concept aimed at exploiting Gamma-Ray Bursts for investigating the early Universe and at providing a substantial advancement of multi-messenger and time-domain astrophysics. These goals will be achieved through a unique combination of instruments allowing GRB and X-ray transient detection over a broad field of view (more than 1sr) with 0.5¿1 arcmin localization, an energy band extending from several MeV down to 0.3¿keV and high sensitivity to transient sources in the soft X-ray domain, as well as on-board prompt (few minutes) follow-up with a 0.7¿m class IR telescope with both imaging and spectroscopic capabilities. THESEUS will be perfectly suited for addressing …

Kolorektālā vēža skrīninga atsaucību veicinošie faktori ģimenes ārsta praksē

2020

2019.gadā tikai 15% no Latvijas mērķa grupas iedzīvotājiem veikuši KRV skrīningu. Darba mērķis ir noskaidrot motivējošos faktorus, kuri veicinājuši iedzīvotājus piedalīties valsts organizētā kolorektālā vēža skrīninga programmā. Materiāli un metodes. Tika izveidota neanonīma, pašaizpildāma, papīra formātā anket…

2017

Pētījums, veltīts historiogrāfijā maz aplūkotai tēmai, Latvijas armijas Veterinārās pārvaldes darbībai Latvijas Neatkarības kara laikā (turpmāk Neatkarības karš) un pēckara periodā, no Veterinārās pārvaldes dibināšanas 1919. gada 29. jūlijā līdz tās reorganizācijai 1921. gada 11. martā.

Multimessenger search for sources of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos: Initial results for LIGO-Virgo and IceCube

2014

Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-29T07:21:49Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2014-11-17 We report the results of a multimessenger search for coincident signals from the LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave observatories and the partially completed IceCube high-energy neutrino detector, including periods of joint operation between 2007-2010. These include parts of the 2005-2007 run and the 2009-2010 run for LIGO-Virgo, and IceCube's observation periods with 22, 59 and 79 strings. We find no significant coincident events, and use the search results to derive upper limits on the rate of joint sources for a range of source emission parameters. For the optimistic assumption of …

Deceleration of arbitrarily magnetized GRB ejecta: the complete evolution

2008

(Abridged) We aim to quantitatively understand the dynamical effect and observational signatures of magnetization of the GRB ejecta on the onset of the afterglow. We perform ultrahigh-resolution one-dimensional relativistic MHD simulations of the interaction of a radially expanding, magnetized ejecta with the interstellar medium. The need of ultrahigh numerical resolution derives from the extreme jump conditions in the region of interaction between the ejecta and the circumburst medium. We study the evolution of an ultrarelativistic shell all the way to a the self-similar asymptotic phase. Our simulations show that the complete evolution can be characterized in terms of two parameters, name…

Exploring by whole exome sequencing patients with initial diagnosis of Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome: the interconnections of epigenetic machinery disord…

2019

Rubinstein–Taybi syndrome (RSTS) is an autosomal-dominant neurodevelopmental disease affecting 1:125,000 newborns characterized by intellectual disability, growth retardation, facial dysmorphisms and skeletal abnormalities. RSTS is caused by mutations in genes encoding for writers of the epigenetic machinery: CREBBP (~ 60%) or its homologous EP300 (~ 10%). No causative mutation is identified in up to 30% of patients. We performed whole-exome sequencing (WES) on eight RSTS-like individuals who had normal high-resolution array CGH testing and were CREBBP- and EP300-mutation -negative, to identify the molecular cause. In four cases, we identified putatively causal variants in three genes (ASXL…

Inhibitory effects of N-valproyl-L-tryptophan on high potassium, low calcium and low magnesium-induced CA1 hippocampal epileptiform bursting activity…

2012

N-valproyl-l-tryptophan (VPA-Tryp), new antiepileptic drug, was tested on CA1 hippocampal epileptiform bursting activity obtained by increasing potassium and lowering calcium and magnesium concentrations in the fluid perfusing rat brain slices. Each slice was treated with a single concentration (0.2, 0.5, 1 or 2 mM) of Valproate (VPA) or VPA-Tryp. Both burst duration and interburst frequency during and after treatment were off-line compared with baseline values. For both parameters, the latency and the length of statistically significant response periods as well as the magnitude of drug-induced responses were calculated. VPA-Tryp evoked fewer and weaker early excitatory effects than VPA on …

Dynamic networks of physiologic interactions of brain waves and rhythms in muscle activity.

2022

The brain plays a central role in facilitating vital body functions and in regulating physiological and organ systems, including the skeleto-muscular and locomotor system. While neural control is essential to synchronize and coordinate activation of various muscle groups and muscle fibers within muscle groups in relation to body movements and distinct physiologic states, the dynamic networks of brain-muscle interactions have not been explored and the complex regulatory mechanism of brain-muscle control remains unknown. Here we present a first study of network interactions between brain waves at different cortical locations and peripheral muscle activity across key physiologic states - wake,…

Search for gamma ray bursts with the ARGO-YBJ detector in scaler mode

2009

We report on the search for Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) in the energy range 1-100 GeV in coincidence with the prompt emission detected by satellites using the Astrophysical Radiation with Ground-based Observatory at YangBaJing (ARGO-YBJ) air shower detector. Thanks to its mountain location (Yangbajing, Tibet, P.R. China, 4300 m a.s.l.), active surface (about 6700 m**2 of Resistive Plate Chambers), and large field of view (about 2 sr, limited only by the atmospheric absorption), the ARGO-YBJ air shower detector is particularly suitable for the detection of unpredictable and short duration events such as GRBs. The search is carried out using the "single particle technique", i.e. counting all the …
