Critical reflections on asymptotically safe gravity

2020

Asymptotic safety is a theoretical proposal for the ultraviolet completion of quantum field theories, in particular for quantum gravity. Significant progress on this program has led to a first characterization of the Reuter fixed point. Further advancement in our understanding of the nature of quantum spacetime requires addressing a number of open questions and challenges. Here, we aim at providing a critical reflection on the state of the art in the asymptotic safety program, specifying and elaborating on open questions of both technical and conceptual nature. We also point out systematic pathways, in various stages of practical implementation, towards answering them. Finally, we also take…

Breakdown of high-energy phosphate compounds and lactate accumulation during short supramaximal exercise.

1987

Muscle ATP, creatine phosphate and lactate, and blood pH and lactate were measured in 7 male sprinters before and after running 40, 60, 80 and 100 m at maximal speed. The sprinters were divided into two groups, group 1 being sprinters who achieved a higher maximal speed (10.07 +/- 0.13 m X s-1) than group 2 (9.75 +/- 0.10 m X s-1), and who also maintained the speed for a longer time. The breakdown of high-energy phosphate stores was significantly greater for group 1 than for group 2 for all distances other than 100 m; the breakdown of creatine phosphate for group 1 was almost the same for 40 m as for 100 m. Muscle and blood lactate began to accumulate during the 40 m exercise. The accumulat…

An integrated identity verification system for mobile terminals

2005

PurposeTo report the work on the design of an integrated identity verification system architecture aimed at approaching high verification accuracy, continuous security, and user‐friendliness.Design/methodology/approachThe reported research corresponds to the building process in the design science research paradigm. The requirements to an identity verification system are defined and used in the selection of architecture components. Furthermore, various issues affecting the suitability of component distribution between a terminal and a remote server are considered.FindingsIn order to meet the stated requirements, in the proposed architecture static and dynamic identity verification is combine…

Synthesis and High-Pressure Study of Corundum-Type In2O3

2015

This work reports the high-pressure and high-temperature (HP-HT) synthesis of pure rhombohedral (corundum-type) phase of indium oxide (In2O3) from its most stable polymorph, cubic bixbyite-type In2O3, using a multianvil press. Structural and vibrational properties of corundum-type In2O3 (rh-In2O3) have been characterized by means of angle-dispersive powder X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements at high pressures which have been compared to structural and lattice dynamics ab initio calculations. The equation of state and the pressure dependence of the Raman-active modes of the corundum-type phase are reported and compared to those of corundum (α-Al2O3). It can be concluded that …

A review of runoff generation and soil erosion across scales in semiarid south-eastern Spain

2011

Climate, lithology, soil and especially, intense land use/cover changes, make SE Spain very vulnerable to runoff generation and water erosion leading to loss of nutrients and organic matter and to infrequent but devastating floods, reservoir siltation and mass failures. This susceptibility has led to heavy economic investment and research efforts since the 1980s, making this region a worldwide reference for understanding the hydrology and geomorphology of semiarid ecosystems. Runoff and soil erosion have been intensively studied throughout the last decades in various natural ecosystems as well as in abandoned farmlands. Research has considered a wide range of methods and spatial and tempora…

Trattamento laparoscopico del megacolon agangliare

2007

Recent trends in surgery for Hirschsprung's disease have been toward early repair and fewer surgical stages. Laparoscopy can be used for colon pull-through even in neonates adding the advantages of a minimally invasive approach to those of the traditional technique. the personal experience in the use of laparoscopically assisted endorectal pull-through in the treatment of Hirschsprung's disease in reported. the advantages it offers are outlined, including excellent visualization of the operative field, accurate dissection of the bowel from pelvic structures, and minimally invasive abdominal wounds. Preliminary results show that laparoscopically assisted endorectal pull-through is one of the…
