Transcatheter embolization of the kidney with butyl-2-cyanoacrylate: Experimental and clinical results

The technique and efficacy of therapeutic catheter embolization of the kidney with butyl-2-cyanoacrylate (Histoacryl) were studied in 80 rabbits (including control groups) and in 10 dogs. A mixture of butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, 50% glucose, and tantalum powder was used for the embolization. Complete and permanent vascular occlusion was found in nearly all cases. The main complication observed was a reflux of embolizing material into the lumbar arteries, which occurred in seven rabbits. Clinically, therapeutic embolization was performed in six patients with hypernephroma. Simple Summary In recent years, obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) have become more prevalent, owing to increased unhealthy habits and sedentary lifestyles becoming public health problems. Both conditions are linked with a higher prevalence of sudden cardiac death (SCD), but the exact mechanisms are not known. An autonomic nervous system imbalance can produce atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, which cause SCD, and this can be quantified by analyzing heart rate variability (HRV). Effect of Rotary Instrument Mineral Oil Lubricant on Osseointegration: A Randomized, Blinded Study in Rabbits

The mechanisms of early failures in dental implant osseointegration are unclear. A possible cause of low levels of bone formation is lubricant contamination on implants during insertion. To explore the impact of lubricant contamination on dental implants, we used 5 New Zealand rabbits and inserted 2 implants per tibia in each animal for a total of 4 implants per animal (20 implants in total). Synthetic multivalent glycopeptide-lipopeptide antitumor vaccines: impact of the cluster effect on the killing of tumor cells.

Multivalent synthetic vaccines were obtained by solid-phase synthesis of tumor-associated MUC1 glycopeptide antigens and their coupling to a Pam3 Cys lipopeptide through click reactions. These vaccines elicited immune responses in mice without the use of any external adjuvant. The vaccine containing four copies of a MUC1 sialyl-TN antigen showed a significant cluster effect. It induced in mice prevailing IgG2a antibodies, which bind to MCF-7 breast tumor cells and initiate the killing of these tumor cells by activation of the complement-dependent cytotoxicity complex.

Abstract Introduction Bisphosphonates are important and effective drugs in oncology and osteoporosis therapy. They accumulate in the bone matrix becoming released and active by bone resorption. This leads to effective inhibition of tumor cells and bone degradation. A side effect of bisphosphonates similar to other drugs like denosumab is osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ). This problem mostly occurs after tooth extraction. Repair of osteochondral defects in articular weightbearing areas in the rabbit's knee. The use of autologous osteochondral and meniscal grafts.

Repair of osteochondral defects in articular weightbearing areas presents its own particular problems because of the low potential of hyaline cartilage for regeneration. Our first group of experiments on the knee of the rabbit confirms that the new regenerated cartilage comes from bone marrow which degenerates before developing into true hyaline cartilage. The second group of experiments shows that autologous grafts from the non-weightbearing articular area suitable for the repair of defects in weightbearing areas. In an third group, autologous meniscal fibrocartilage was used as a graft for the repair of osteochondral defects.

With the combined osteosynthesis of pathological fractures in association with tumors and/or metastases in mind, E. Merck (Darmstadt, FRG) developed a bone cement containing a cytostatic agent, methotrexate-Palacos flow y (MTX-Pf). The animal-experimental study presented here investigates the tolerability of MTX-Pf in the femurs of rabbits with lateral comparison. The perception of some mixtures of odorants engages configural abilities, i.e. the perception of these mixtures as single odor objects. For instance, data in human adults demonstrated that a mixture of two odorants (AB), one smelling like strawberry and the other like caramel, generates the configural perception of the odor of pineapple (Le Berre et al., 2008; Barkat et al., 2012).
