Time-variations of zeroth-order vegetation absorption and scattering at L-band

2021

Abstract Surface soil moisture and vegetation optical depth (VOD), as an indicator of vegetation wet biomass, from passive microwave remote sensing have been increasingly applied in global ecology and climate research. Both soil moisture and VOD are retrieved from satellite brightness temperature measurements assuming a zeroth order radiative transfer model, commonly known as the tau-omega model. In this model the emission of a vegetated surface is dependent on soil moisture, vegetation absorption and vegetation scattering. Vegetation scattering is normally represented by the single scattering albedo, ω, and is commonly assumed to be a time-invariant calibration parameter to achieve high ac…

Towards the Operational Spatialization of the Single Band Thermal Atmospheric Correction. Application to Landsat 7 ETM+

2018

This work aims to improve the accuracy in Land Surface Temperature (LST) from single-channel thermal sensors by providing spatialized maps of transmittance, upwelling and downwelling atmospheric radiances required in the radiative transfer equation. Two different techniques are introduced for the estimation of pixel-by-pixel atmospheric parameters, focusing on the correction of Landsat Thermal Infrared (TIR) data. First technique is based on the linearization of the atmospheric parameters with the total column water vapor (W), extracted from the MOD05 product, whereas a second technique uses the Single Band Atmospheric Correction (SBAC) tool. Ground-measured values of LST in an agricultural…

2012

Import OPTIWOS; International audience; Recent improvements in high spectral resolution measurements of methane absorption at wavenumbers between 4800 cm(-1) and 7919 cm(-1) have greatly increased the number of lines with known lower state energies, the number of weak lines, and the number of lines observed at low temperatures (Campargue, A., Wang, L, Kassi, S., Masat, M., Votava, O. A new MHD-assisted Stokes inversion technique

2016

©2017 The American Astronomical Society. All rights reserved. We present a new method of Stokes inversion of spectropolarimetric data and evaluate it by taking the example of a Sunrise/IMaX observation. An archive of synthetic Stokes profiles is obtained by the spectral synthesis of state-of-the-art magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations and a realistic degradation to the level of the observed data. The definition of a merit function allows the archive to be searched for the synthetic Stokes profiles that best match the observed profiles. In contrast to traditional Stokes inversion codes, which solve the Unno–Rachkovsky equations for the polarized radiative transfer numerically and fit the …

Accretion disk coronae of intermediate polar cataclysmic variables

2017

Context. Intermediate polar cataclysmic variables (IPCV) contain a magnetic, rotating white dwarf surrounded by a magnetically truncated accretion disk. To explain their strong flickering X-ray emission, accretion has been successfully taken into account. Nevertheless, observations suggest that accretion phenomena might not be the only process behind it. An intense flaring activity occurring on the surface of the disk may generate a corona, contribute to the thermal X-ray emission, and influence the system stability. Aims. Our purposes are: investigating the formation of an extended corona above the accretion disk, due to an intense flaring activity occurring on the disk surface; studying t…

Near-infrared radiative transfer modelling with different CH4 spectroscopic databases to retrieve atmospheric methane total amount

2011

International audience; Atmospheric methane content can be retrieved from measurements of solar radiation attenuated by the atmosphere in the near infrared spectral region where the space-borne and ground-based spectrometers carry out regular measurements. It is shown, in the present work, that the different spectroscopic databases can give significantly different results for both forward simulations of the atmospheric transmittance and the inverse problem solution to retrieve the CH4 total content in the atmosphere using spectra measured by ground-based FTIR spectrometer in the near infrared spectral region. These discrepancies and the problem of the reduction of their influence on the atm…

Thermally Stimulated Ionic and Electronic Processes and Radiation-Induced Defect Annealing in LiBaF3 Crystals

2000

The electronic, ionic and ion-diffusion controlled thermally stimulated relaxation (TSR) processes in X-ray irradiated (at 80 K or 290 K) nominally pure LiBaF3 fluoroperovskite crystals have been investigated in the 90–550 K range by means of the ionic conductivity, ionic thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC), as well as the thermally stimulated current (TSC), thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) and the X-ray induced optical absorption spectra thermal bleaching techniques. The role of the thermoactivated ionic and ionic-electronic processes in the TSR (thermal bleaching, TSC and TSL) of X-ray irradiated crystals is studied above 250 K. The TSL efficiency (ratio TSL/TSC) ver…

Er3+-doped GeGaSbS glasses for mid-IR fibre laser application: Synthesis and rare earth spectroscopy

2008

International audience; With an infrared transparency extended to 10 µm, low multiphonon relaxation rates and suitable rare earth solubility, sulphide glasses in the Ge-Ga-Sb-S system allow radiative emission from rare earth ions in the mid-IR range. The Er3+ ion, widely studied in glass fibres for optical amplification at 1.5 µm, presents an interesting transition for mid-IR applications around 4.5 µm (4I9/2→ 4I11/2). Thus, the aim of this work is to evaluate the Er3+-doped Ge20Ga5Sb10S65 glass as a potential fibre laser source operating in the 3-5 µm mid-IR spectral region. For that purpose, absorption and emission spectra were recorded from visible to mid-IR and the radiative lifetimes o…

Estimation of solar-induced vegetation fluorescence from space measurements

2007

[1] A characteristic spectral emission is observed in vegetation chlorophyll under excitation by solar radiation. This emission, known as solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence, occurs in the red and near infra-red spectral regions. In this paper a new methodology for the estimation of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence from spaceborne and airborne sensors is presented. The fluorescence signal is included in an atmospheric radiative transfer scheme so that chlorophyll fluorescence and surface reflectance are retrieved consistently from the measured at-sensor radiance. This methodology is tested on images acquired by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) on board the ENVIron…
