Organic derivatives of mercury and tin as promoters of membrane lipid peroxidation.
2008
The toxicity mechanisms of mercury and tin organic derivatives are still under debate. Generally the presence of organic moieties in their molecules makes these compounds lipophilic and membrane active species. The recent results suggest that Hg and Sn compounds deplete HS-groups in proteins, glutathione and glutathione-dependent enzymatic systems; this process also results in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), the enhancement of membrane lipids peroxidation and damage of the antioxidative defence system. The goal of this review is to present recent results in the studies oriented towards the role of organomercury and organotin compounds in the xenobiotic-mediated enhancement …
Magnesium, Oxidative Stress, and Aging Muscle
2014
Abstract Magnesium (Mg) deficiency, aside from having a negative impact on the energy production pathways required by the mitochondria to generate ATP, also reduces the threshold antioxidant capacity of the aging organism and its resistance to free-radical damage. Mg acts as an antioxidant against free radical damage of the mitochondria. Chronic Mg deficiency results in excessive production of oxygen-derived free radicals and low-grade inflammation. Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress have been identified as pathogenic factors in several age-related conditions. Aging is often associated with Mg inadequacy, muscle loss, and sarcopenia. Although the importance of magnesium as a determin…
Cyclodextrins in Polymer Synthesis: Free Radical Polymerization of a N-Methacryloyl-11-aminoundecanoic Acid/β-Cyclodextrin Pseudorotaxane in an Aque…
1999
The relatively hydrophobic monomer N-methacryloyl-11-aminoundecanoic acid (1) was incorporated as a guest into the cavity of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as a host, yielding the water-soluble monomer N-me...
Investigation of Multicomponent Sorption in Polymers from Fluid Mixtures at Supercritical Conditions: The Case of the Carbon Dioxide/Vinylidenefluor…
2008
The simultaneous sorption of carbon dioxide and vinylidene fluoride (VDF) in poly(vinylidenefluoride) from their supercritical (sc) mixtures was studied using an experimental method, already described in a previous publication, based on the gas-chromatographic determination of the equilibrium composition of the fluid phase in contact with the polymer. Argon was added to the system as a nonabsorbable molecular probe in the polymer to take into account the effect of the volume swelling on the measurement. Sorption behavior has been studied at 50 °C by changing the composition and the density of the supercritical phase. We have found that VDF dissolves in its polymer with concentrations much l…
Radical cation salts based on BEDT-TTF and the paramagnetic anion [Cr(NCS)6]3−
1999
Abstract A new radical cation salt formulated as (ET)5.5[Cr(NCS)6] (ET = BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylene)dithiotetrathiafulvalene) has been synthesised and characterised by X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. The structure shows the presence of alternating layers of the ET units and mixed layers of anions and an isolated ET molecule. The magnetic susceptibility data in the temperature range 2–300 K show a Curie law with C = 1.771 cm3.K.mol−1 and Nα = 1.20.10−5 cm3.mol−1, in agreement with the presence of isolated Cr(III) without any contribution from the organic part.
Surfactant Assisted Polymerization of Tetrafluoroethylene in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide with a Pilot Scale Batch Reactor.
2008
Chain-free radical polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) was carried out in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2), at 50 °C and 121–133 bar, with tertiary-amyl-per-pivalate as a free radical initiator, using a 5-L pilot scale batch reactor. Experiments were carried out both in the absence and in the presence of perfluoropolyether (PFPE) carboxylate surfactants. Stabilizers were employed under the free acid form and as sodium and calcium salts. An expanded fibrillated poly(TFE) was obtained in all experiments. In the case of surfactant-free polymerizations, the product was mainly constituted by irregular shape macroparticles having size in the range 200–500 μm. Quite interestingly, when…
Synthesis of .beta.-ionone in an aldehyde/xanthine oxidase/.beta.-carotene system involving free radical formation
1994
The enzymic cooxidation of β-carotene (BC) by xanthine oxidase (XO) in aqueous solutions leads to β-ionone (BI) and derivatives: epoxy-β-ionone (EPBI), dihydroactinidiolide, β-cyclocitral, pseudoionone, etc. We demonstrate, in this article, that this is due to free radical (R . ) formation during the first hour of stirring and the use of aldehydes as substrate. The bleaching of BC does not occur when the common substrate of XO, xanthine, is used; this proves that the superoxide anion O 2 .- alone is not active on BC. BI formation in this case is not observed
Synthesis of Heterotelechelic α,ω Dye-Functionalized Polymer by the RAFT Process and Energy Transfer between the End Groups
2009
The synthesis of a vinyl polymer with two different fluorescent dye end groups using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization is described. Use of a pentafluorophenyl (PFP) activated ester chain transfer agent (CTA) provided a polymer with an R end group that was reactive toward amines and a dithioester ω end group. The R PFP ester was amidated with Oregon Green Cadaverin. This did not harm the ω dithioester, which was subsequently aminolyzed with an excess of n-propylamine in the presence of Texas Red-2-sulfonamidoethyl methanethiosulfonate, resulting in a disulfide bond connecting the second dye to the polymer chain. Excess dyes and side products were removed…

The formation and the behaviour of radiation induced free radicals in poly[1-(tert-butoxy carbonylthio)ethylene] (2) and in a statistical copolymer 4 from O-tert-butyl S-vinyl thiocarbonate (1) with N-vinylpyrrolidone (1:1) was studied, using ESR spectroscopy. After γ-irradiation at 77 K, tert-butyl radicals and other species were detected in the polymers. The yield for the homopolymer was evaluated to be Gtert-butyl = 0.18. Investigations on the behaviour of radicals with an annealing procedure revealed, that at first the tert-butyl radicals disappear with increasing temperature and that a further warming up leads to a concentration rise of this radical species. A radical cation localized …
Quinonoid π-extended tetrathiafulvalenes (TTFs)
2001
Publisher Summary Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) is a fascinating planar πelectron-donor molecule with a broad range of potential applications. TTF and its derivatives play an important role in the field of organic conductors forming charge-transfer (CT) complexes and radical cation salts (Bechgaard salts) with a huge variety of electron-acceptor molecules and anions in the search for electrically conducting and superconducting materials. The chapter focuses on highly π-extended electron donors with p-quinodimethane structures as interesting precursors of materials with non-conventional properties. The first dimeric examples of π-extended TTF derivatives connected through an oxygen atom are also …
