Developing new treatment strategies for acute ischemic stroke in the last twenty years has offered some important successes, but also several failures. Most trials of neuroprotective therapies have been uniformly negative to date. Recent research has reported how excitatory amino acids act as the major excitatory neurotransmitters in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. Decomposition of peroxy radicals in SiO 2 glass with X‐rays or KrF laser light

Decomposition of the peroxy radical (POR) was examined for wet SiO 2 glasses exposed to X-rays from a Rh-target tube or KrF laser light. The exposure to KrF laser light destroys POR resulting in the selective formation ofthe oxygen dangling bond (termed "non-bridging oxygen hole center", NBOHC). In contrast, the exposure to X-rays creates both the silicon dangling bond (E' center) and NBOHC on bleaching of POR. Clear mutual correlation is found between the formation kinetics of the interstitial oxygen molecule (O 2 ) and of the Si-Si bond but not between those of O 2 and the E' center. Background: To evaluate the feasibility and clinical preliminary results of weekly cisplatin and volumetric-modulated arc therapy to the pelvis with simultaneous integrated boost to macroscopic disease in a cohort of elderly patients. Materials and Methods: Inclusion criteria of this prospective study were age ≥70 years, Karnofsky performance status 70 to 100, locally advanced histologically proven squamous cervical carcinoma, and patients unable to undergo brachytherapy. Radiation doses prescribed were 66 Gy to the macroscopic disease and 54 Gy to the pelvic nodes in 30 fractions. Weekly cisplatin dose was 40 mg/mq. Results: A total of 30 patients were recruited. Abstract Nucleic acid molecules such as small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and plasmidic DNAs (pDNAs) have been shown to have the potential to be of therapeutic value in different human diseases. Their practical use is however compromised by the lack of appropriate release systems. Delivered as naked molecules, siRNAs/pDNAs are rapidly degraded by extracellular nucleases thus considerably reducing the amount of molecule which can reach the target cells. Additionally, the anionic charge of the phosphate groups present on the siRNAs/pDNAs backbone, disfavors the interaction with the negatively charged surface of the cell membrane.
