Arthroscopic Reinsertion of Acute Injuries of the Scapholunate Ligament Technique and Results

2020

Abstract Objective To describe a technique for treating acute injuries of the scapholunate ligament (SLL) by performing an arthroscopic reinsertion of the SLL and dorsal capsulodesis and to present the results obtained. Methods The study deals with an analytical, prospective clinical study that included 19 consecutive patients with acute injury of the SLL. The range of joint motion, grip strength, pain according to the visual analog scale, functional outcomes according to the Mayo Wrist Score (MWS), and the QuickDASH Score were studied preoperatively and 6 and 12 months postoperatively. The complications and necessary reinterventions were recorded. Results Nineteen patients with acute injur…

Rho resonance, timelike pion form factor, and implications for lattice studies of the hadronic vacuum polarization

2020

We study isospin-1 P-wave ππ scattering in lattice QCD with two flavors of O(a) improved Wilson fermions. For pion masses ranging from mπ=265 MeV to mπ=437 MeV, we determine the energy spectrum in the center-of-mass frame and in three moving frames. We obtain the scattering phase shifts using Lüscher’s finite-volume quantization condition. Fitting the dependence of the phase shifts on the scattering momentum to a Breit-Wigner form allows us to determine the corresponding ρ mass mρ and gρππ coupling. By combining the scattering phase shifts with the decay matrix element of the vector current, we calculate the timelike pion form factor, Fπ, and compare the results to the Gounaris-Sakurai repr…

Optical absorption of divalent metal tungstates: Correlation between the band-gap energy and the cation ionic radius

2008

We have carried out optical-absorption and reflectance measurements at room temperature in single crystals of AWO4 tungstates (A = Ba, Ca, Cd, Cu, Pb, Sr, and Zn). From the experimental results their band-gap energy has been determined to be 5.26 eV (BaWO4), 5.08 eV (SrWO4), 4.94 eV (CaWO4), 4.15 eV (CdWO4), 3.9-4.4 eV (ZnWO4), 3.8-4.2 eV (PbWO4), and 2.3 eV (CuWO4). The results are discussed in terms of the electronic structure of the studied tungstates. It has been found that those compounds where only the s electron states of the A2+ cation hybridize with the O 2p and W 5d states (e.g BaWO4) have larger band-gap energies than those where also p, d, and f states of the A2+ cation contribu…

Broadband X-ray spectral variability of the pulsing ULX NGC 1313 X-2

2021

[Context] It is thought that ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are mainly powered by super-Eddington accreting neutron stars or black holes as shown by the recent discovery of X-ray pulsations and relativistic winds. [Aims] This work presents a follow-up study of the spectral evolution over two decades of the pulsing ULX NGC 1313 X-2 in order to understand the structure of the accretion disc. The primary objective is to determine the shape and nature of the dominant spectral components by investigating their variability with the changes in the source luminosity. [Methods[ We performed a spectral analysis over the canonical 0.3-10.0 keV energy band of all the high signal-to-noise XMM-Newton…

Synthesis and solution properties of star-shaped poly(tert-butyl acrylate)

2000

A series of star polymers consisting of poly(tert-butyl acrylate) arms and an ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) microgel core were synthesized using anionic polymerization. The effect of various parameters (precursor length, ratio [[EGDMA]/[Initiator], reaction time, and overall concentrations) on the average number of arms was investigated. Molecular weights were determined using GPC coupled with an online viscometer and MALLS. The exponents for the relation between intrinsic viscosity or radius of gyration and molecular weight, respectively, are extremely low, indicating that the dimensions of the star polymers only slightly increase with the number of arms. After a certain number of …

Wind-luminosity evolution in NLS1 AGN 1H 0707−495

2021

Ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) have been detected in the high-quality X-ray spectra of a number of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with fairly high accretion rates and are thought to significantly contribute to the AGN feedback. After a decade of dedicated study, their launching mechanisms and structure are still not well understood, but variability techniques may provide useful constraints. In this work, therefore, we perform a flux-resolved X-ray spectroscopy on a highly accreting and variable NLS1 AGN, 1H 0707-495, using all archival XMM-Newton observations to study the structure of the UFO. We find that the wind spectral lines weaken at higher luminosities, most likely due to an increasing ion…

Is bone loss the reversal of bone accrual? Evidence from a cross-sectional study in daughter-mother-grandmother trios.

2011

Bone adapts to mechanical loads applied on it. During aging, loads decrease to a greater extent at those skeletal sites where loads increase most in earlier life. Thus, the loss of bone may occur preferentially at sites where most bone has been deposited previously; ie, bone loss could be the directional reversal of accrual. To test this hypothesis, we compared the bone mass distribution at weight-bearing (tibia) and non-weight-bearing (radius) bones among 18-year-old girls, their premenopausal mothers, and their postmenopausal maternal grandmothers. Bone and muscle properties were measured by pQCT, and polar distribution of bone mass was obtained in 55 girl-mother–maternal grandmother trio…

Second study on the recurrence risk of isolated esophageal atresia with or without trachea-esophageal fistula among first-degree relatives: no eviden…

2013

BACKGROUND Esophageal atresia with/without trachea-esophageal fistula (EA/TEF) denotes a spectrum of severe congenital malformations. The aim of this systematic study was to determine both the recurrence risk for EA/TEF, and the risk for malformations of the VATER/VACTERL association spectrum, in first-degree relatives of patients with isolated EA/TEF. METHODS A total of 108 unrelated patients with isolated EA/TEF were included. These individuals had 410 first-degree relatives including 194 siblings. The presence of EA/TEF and malformations of the VATER/VACTERL association spectrum in relatives was systematically assessed. Data from the EUROCAT network were used for comparison. RESULTS None…

Loading modalities and bone structures at nonweight-bearing upper extremity and weight-bearing lower extremity: a pQCT study of adult female athletes.

2005

This cross-sectional study of adult female athletes assessed whether the apparent loading-related differences in bone structure are primarily associated with the loading type or the muscle performance-related joint moments. Several structural variables at shaft sites of the tibia, radius and humerus, and distal sites of the tibia and radius were measured with peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) among 113 female national level athletes (representing hurdling, volleyball, soccer, racket-sports and swimming) and their 30 nonathletic referents. For the weight-bearing lower extremities, the loading modalities of the above sports were classified into high-impact (hurdling, volleyba…
