Simultaneous Color Contrast in Goldfish— a Quantitative Study
1997
AbstractA set of 9–15 colored test fields was presented to goldfish. In Experiment 1, test field hues ranged from green through yellow to red; in Experiment 2, the hues varied from blue through gray to yellow. In the training conditions, the test fields were presented with a gray or black surround. The fish learned to choose one intermediate test field hue by rewarding them with food. In the test conditions, the color of the surround was changed from gray to green, or red (Experiment 1), and from black to blue, or yellow (Experiment 2). The choice behavior of the goldfish changed substantially: one of the test fields other than the training test field was preferred. Direction and strength o…
TH-C-AUD A-07: Evaluation of the Correction Factor Due to the Lack of Full Scatter Conditions in Cs-137 and Ir-192 Brachytherapy Dosimetric Studies
2008
Purpose: Use of a finite phantom to derive dose rate distributions around brachytherapysources implies a lack of backscattering material near the phantom periphery. Conventional planning algorithms and newly‐developed 3D correction algorithms are based on physics data under full scatter conditions. Presently, most published Monte Carlodosimetric studies have been obtained using either a spherical phantom (15cm in radius) or a cylinder phantom (40×40cm2). The study objective was to derive a simple relationship to correlate the radial dose function, g(r), obtained for each one of these phantoms to that obtained for an unbounded phantom. Method and Materials: Assuming bare point sources of 137…
Ultraviolet radiation protection by a beach umbrella.
2010
A beach umbrella intercepts all direct UV irradiance, but only part of the diffuse component. Using a simple sky view factor model, we have determined the fraction of the hemispheric diffuse irradiance that is not intercepted by the umbrella. Assuming a sensor at the surface and close to the center of the umbrella, isotropic diffuse irradiance and for an umbrella of 80 cm radius and 100 cm high, our results show that approximately 34% of the incident horizontal irradiance is not intercepted by the umbrella. These results agree with irradiance measurements conducted with and without the umbrella. The model is next extended to examine receipt of UV radiation by a human figure in a vertical po…
Pseudopeptidic ligands: exploring the self-assembly of isophthaloylbisglycine (H2IBG) and divalent metal ions.
2012
We present a systematic study of the complexation of the new pseudopeptidic ligand isophthaloylbisglycine (H(2)IBG) with divalent metal ions of varying ionic radius. This work represents the initial employment of H(2)IBG in the coordination chemistry of alkaline earth, 3d transition, Zn(II) and Cd(II) metal elements. Infrared, NMR, thermal, magnetic, adsorption and theoretical studies of these compounds are also discussed.
Quasi-elastic light scattering in polymer-containing microemulsion
1996
Abstract Quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS) was performed in dilute water in oil microemulsion stabilized by AOT surfactant. The water-soluble polyethylene oxide (PEO) with low molecular weight (8000) added to the microemulsion seems to be confined within the aqueous microphase, since PEO is insoluble in oil (n-heptane). The measurements by QELS of diffusion coefficient, at dilute concentrations, allow determination of the size of the droplets. The phase diagram of the microemulsion undergoes remarkable changes on addition of the polymer. The results show that at fixed R ( water surfactant ratio) the droplets decrease their size as the concentration of polymer increases. This occurrence …
A Facile Approach for Transferring Hydrophobic Magnetic Nanoparticles into Water-Soluble Particles
2008
A novel, easy and high-efficient method is described for transferring hydrophobic magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles from organic to aqueous solution by wrapping a thermo-responsive and photocrosslinkable poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) terpolymer around the particles. The wrapping procedure is introduced by the co-nonsolvent transition of PNIPAm in the mixing solvent and the polymer can dissolve in water carrying Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles by noncovalent interaction. The temperature-dependant and magnetic properties of the water-soluble particles are characterized in this paper.
EFFECTS OF SENSITIZED AND UNSENSITIZED LONGWAVE U.V.-IRRADIATION ON THE SOLUTION PROPERTIES OF DNA
1971
— Two types of photoreactions occur in DNA irradiated in aqueous systems with longwave u.v.-light (Λ > 295 nm), namely, (a) thymine dimerization, and (b) single- and double-strand breakage of the sugar phosphate backbone; these two reactions are unrelated. The presence of acetophenone as a photosensitizer caused an increase in dimerization by a factor of 16, and an increase in single-strand breaks by a factor of 4. The number of thymine dimers per single-strand break is about 100 in the sensitized and 25 in the unsensitized reaction. The alteration of the radius of gyration of DNA molecules is that expected by the degradation observed. At the same time the change in hyperchromicity is very …
Molecular dynamics of supercooled polymer films
2000
We present results of molecular dynamics simulations for a supercooled polymer melt confined between two smooth and purely repulsive walls. The thickness D of the film is about 7 times the bulk radius of gyration. For all temperatures studied, a significant increase of the monomer and chain mobilities with respect to the bulk is observed. Preliminary results suggest that structural relaxation times exhibit a power-law behavior in the vicinity of a critical temperature T c (D) 0.39 (in Lennard-Jones units). This estimate of T c (D) is about 14% smaller than the corresponding bulk value. Despite this significant decrease the time dependence of various mean-square displacements seems to be una…
1,1-Dichloroethane: a molecular crystal structure without van der Waals contacts?
2008
Isochoric and isobaric freezing of 1,1-dichloroethane, CH3CHCl2, mp = 176.19 K, yielded the orthorhombic structure, space group Pnma, with the fully ordered molecules, in the staggered conformation, located on mirror planes. The CH3CHCl2 ambient-pressure (0.1 MPa) structures were determined at 160 and 100 K, whereas the 295 K high-pressure structures were determined at 0.59 and 1.51 GPa. At 0.1 MPa, all intermolecular distances are considerably longer than the sums of the van der Waals radii, and only a pressure of about 1.5 GPa squeezed the Cl···Cl and Cl···H contacts to distances commensurate with these sums. The exceptionally large difference between the melting points of isomeric 1,1- a…

Monte Carlo simulations are presented for binary (AB) symmetric polymer mixtures (chain lengths NANBN) for the case that an attractive interaction ϵ exists between monomers of the same kind, and the limiting case that one species (B) is very diluted. It is shown that with increasing interaction strength ϵ/(kB · T), T being the absolute temperature, the minority chains collapse to a very dense configuration, while the majority chains stay nearly Gaussian. Both chain radii, structure factors and numbers of nearest neighbour contacts are discussed.
