Time-domain effective-one-body gravitational waveforms for coalescing compact binaries with nonprecessing spins, tides and self-spin effects

2018

We present TEOBResumS, a new effective-one-body (EOB) waveform model for nonprecessing (spin-aligned) and tidally interacting compact binaries.Spin-orbit and spin-spin effects are blended together by making use of the concept of centrifugal EOB radius. The point-mass sector through merger and ringdown is informed by numerical relativity (NR) simulations of binary black holes (BBH) computed with the SpEC and BAM codes. An improved, NR-based phenomenological description of the postmerger waveform is developed. The tidal sector of TEOBResumS describes the dynamics of neutron star binaries up to merger and incorporates a resummed attractive potential motivated by recent advances in the post-Newt…

Tailored electrospun nanofibrous polycaprolactone/gelatin scaffolds into an acid hydrolytic solvent system

2018

[EN] Blended nanofibrous scaffolds based on polycaprolactone (PCL) and gelatin (Ge) were successfully prepared. A formic/acetic acid (1:1) mixture was used to dissolve PCL/Ge blends from 100/0 to 20/80 %wt in steps of 10 %wt. The hydrolysis of the PCL diluted in the formic/acetic acid mixture was considered as a method for tailoring the surface morphology and physicochemical features of the nanofibrous PCL/Ge scaffolds as a function of the dissolution time. The fibre diameter remained in the nanoscale range for all the studied scaffolds, which is crucial to mimic the extra-cellular matrix size. The reduction of the intrinsic viscosity, molar mass and hydrodynamic radius found for the PCL mo…

Towards a representation of halogen chemistry within volcanic plumes in a chemistry transport model

2014

Volcanoes are a known source of halogens to the atmosphere. HBr volcanic emissions lead rapidly to the formation of BrO within volcanic plumes as shown by recent work based on observations and models. BrO, having a longer residence time in the atmosphere than HBr, is expected to have a significant impact on tropospheric chemistry, at least at the local and regional scales. The objective of this paper is to prepare a framework that will allow 3-D modelling of volcanic halogen emissions in order to determine their fate within the volcanic plume and then in the atmosphere at the regional and global scales. This work is based on a 1-D configuration of the chemistry transport model MOCAGE whose …

Charge radii of exotic potassium isotopes challenge nuclear theory and the magic character of N = 32

2020

Nuclear charge radii are sensitive probes of different aspects of the nucleon-nucleon interaction and the bulk properties of nuclear matter; thus, they provide a stringent test and challenge for nuclear theory. The calcium region has been of particular interest, as experimental evidence has suggested a new magic number at $N = 32$ [1-3], while the unexpectedly large increases in the charge radii [4,5] open new questions about the evolution of nuclear size in neutron-rich systems. By combining the collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy method with $\beta$-decay detection, we were able to extend the charge radii measurement of potassium ($Z =19$) isotopes up to the exotic $^{52}$K ($t_{1…

Freeze-out radii extracted from three-pion cumulants in pp, p–Pb and Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC

2014

In high-energy collisions, the spatio-temporal size of the particle production region can be measured using the Bose-Einstein correlations of identical bosons at low relative momentum. The source radii are typically extracted using two-pion correlations, and characterize the system at the last stage of interaction, called kinetic freeze-out. In low-multiplicity collisions, unlike in high-multiplicity collisions, two-pion correlations are substantially altered by background correlations, e.g. mini-jets. Such correlations can be suppressed using three-pion cumulant correlations. We present the first measurements of the size of the system at freeze-out extracted from three-pion cumulant correl…

Circular Forms in Aleksis Kivi’s Texts

2016

In this paper, I identify and analyse regular geometric forms that appear in nineteenth-century Finnish author Aleksis Kivi’s texts. His characters and his narrators exemplify these forms to the reader. The characters’ environments are geometrically described, mapped and constructed in Seven Brothers, and geometric figures also exist in several of Kivi’s novels, plays and poems. Circles are the most common of these figures. Thus, I concentrate on expanding and converging regular geometric forms that connect to circles. peerReviewed

Computation of vertically averaged velocities in irregular sections of straight channels

2015

Abstract. Two new methods for vertically averaged velocity computation are presented, validated and compared with other available formulas. The first method derives from the well-known Huthoff algorithm, which is first shown to be dependent on the way the river cross section is discretized into several subsections. The second method assumes the vertically averaged longitudinal velocity to be a function only of the friction factor and of the so-called "local hydraulic radius", computed as the ratio between the integral of the elementary areas around a given vertical and the integral of the elementary solid boundaries around the same vertical. Both integrals are weighted with a linear shape f…

Functional Morphology of Human Arteries During Fetal and Postnatal Development

1980

The equilibrium between the distending force of the blood pressure and the arterial wall is determined essentially by a simple law of mechanics, the law of Laplace. According to this law, the total force or tension (T) in the vessel’s wall represents the product of the radius of the vessel (r) and the blood pressure (p), T = r.p. The law of Laplace may be used to estimate and compare the tension produced by blood pressure in vessels of different size and thereby determine the increase in functional load on arteries. Since tension increases not only with blood pressure but also with the radius of the vessel, the highest tension is presumably produced in the wall of the ascending aorta where …

Screw fixation of radial head fractures: Compression screw versus lag screw—A biomechanical comparison

2009

Abstract Introduction Secondary loss of reduction and pseudarthrosis due to unstable fixation methods remain challenging problems of surgical stabilisation of radial head fractures. The purpose of our study was to determine whether the 3.0 mm Headless Compression Screw (HCS) provides superior stability to the standard 2.0 mm cortical screw (COS). Materials and methods Eight pairs of fresh frozen human cadaveric proximal radii were used for this paired comparison. A standardised Mason II-Fracture was created with a fragment size of 1/3 of the radial head's articular surface that was then stabilised either with two 3.0 mm HCS (Synthes) or two 2.0 mm COS (Synthes) according to a randomisation …

Ipriflavone prevents radial bone loss in postmenopausal women with low bone mass over 2 years.

1997

Two hundred and fifty-five postmenopausal women with distal forearm bone mineral density (BMD) 1 SD below the mean value for normal age-matched postmenopausal subjects were randomly allocated to a 2-year treatment with oral ipriflavone (200 mg t.i.d.) or a matched placebo, according to a double-masked, parallel-group design. All patients also received a 1 g/day calcium supplement. Distal radius BMD and bone metabolism markers were measured at baseline, and every 6 months. Blood haematology and chemistry and physical parameters were monitored at the same time. One hundred and ninety-six patients completed 2 years of treatment. BMD changes from baseline were analysed according to valid comple…
