Legibility of Text and Pictograms in Variable Message Signs: Can Single-Word Messages Outperform Pictograms?
2018
The current research shows the advantage of single-word messages in the particular case of variable message signs (VMSs) with a high aspect ratio.Early studies on traffic sign design proposed that pictorial information would advantage equivalent text messages in static signs. We used a driving simulator to present individually 36 VMSs, showing six words (e.g., "congestion") and six danger signs (e.g., congestion traffic sign). In Experiment 1, 18 drivers read aloud the text or orally identified the pictograms as soon as they could correctly do it. In Experiment 2, a different sample of 18 drivers gave a motor response, according to the meaning of the message. We analyzed the legibility dista…
Long-term graft function of adult rat and human islets encapsulated in novel alginate-based microcapsules after transplantation in immunocompetent di…
2005
We describe the results of the first study to show that adult rat and human islets can be protected against xenogenic rejection in immunocompetent diabetic mice by encapsulating them in a novel alginate-based microcapsule system with no additional permselective membrane. Nonencapsulated islets lost function within 4–8 days after being transplanted into diabetic Balb/c mice, whereas transplanted encapsulated adult rat or human islets resulted in normoglycemia for >7 months. When rat islet grafts were removed 10 and 36 weeks after transplantation, the mice became immediately hyperglycemic, thus demonstrating the efficacy of the encapsulated islets. The explanted capsules showed only a …
SARS-CoV-2-specific Cell-mediated Immunity in Kidney Transplant Recipients Recovered From COVID-19.
2021
BACKGROUND: The magnitude and kinetics of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2-specific cell-mediated immunity (SARS-CoV-2-CMI) in kidney transplant (KT) recipients remain largely unknown. METHODS: We enumerated SARS-CoV-2-specific interferon-I³-producing CD69+ CD4+ and CD8+ T cells at months 4 and 6 from the diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in 21 KT recipients by intracellular cytokine staining. Overlapping peptides encompassing the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) glycoprotein N-terminal 1- to 643-amino acid sequence and the membrane protein were used as stimulus. SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies targeting the S1 protein were assessed by ELISA at month 6. RESULTS: Detectable (≥0.1…
Depletion of naive T cells using clinical grade magnetic CD45RA beads: a new approach for GVHD prophylaxis
2013
Depletion of naive T cells from donor leukapheresis products (LPs) aims at the reduction of alloreactivity, while preserving memory T-cell reactivity (for example, to pathogens). This study established the immunomagnetic depletion procedure under clean room conditions using CD45RA beads and analyzed LPs of six donors for cell composition and functional immune responses. CD45RA depletion resulted in 3.4-4.7 log (median 4.4) reduction of CD45RA(+) T cells, thereby eliminating naive and late effector T cells. B cells were also completely removed, whereas significant proportions of NK cells, monocytes and granulocytes persisted. CD45RA-depleted LPs contained effector and central memory CD4(+) a…
Combination of the mTOR inhibitor ridaforolimus and the anti-IGF1R monoclonal antibody dalotuzumab: preclinical characterization and phase I clinical…
2014
Abstract Purpose: Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibition activates compensatory insulin–like growth factor receptor (IGFR) signaling. We evaluated the ridaforolimus (mTOR inhibitor) and dalotuzumab (anti-IGF1R antibody) combination. Experimental Design: In vitro and in vivo models, and a phase I study in which patients with advanced cancer received ridaforolimus (10–40 mg/day every day × 5/week) and dalotuzumab (10 mg/kg/week or 7.5 mg/kg/every other week) were explored. Results: Preclinical studies demonstrated enhanced pathway inhibition with ridaforolimus and dalotuzumab. With 87 patients treated in the phase I study, main dose-limiting toxicities (DLT) of the combination were p…
Increase of CCR7- CD45RA+ CD8 T cells (TEMRA) in Chronic Graft-versus-host Disease
2006
Among the late effects of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), chronic graft-vs-host disease (cGVHD) still remains as the major determinant of long-term outcome and quality of life. The disease typically appears between 3 months to 1.5 years following an allogeneic transplantation and is characterized by symptoms similar to those of autoimmune disease.
Mobilization of peripheral blood progenitor cells with a combination of cyclophosphamide, r-metHuSCF and filgrastim in patients with breast cancer pr…
2002
The objective of our study was to determine the effect of adding r-metHuSCF to Filgrastim and cyclophosphamide for mobilization of peripheral blood progenitor cells (PBPC), on collection of CD34(+) cells and engraftment after autologous stem cell transplant. Twenty-three patients with previously treated stage II-IV breast cancer received cyclophosphamide (3 g/m(2)), Filgrastim 5 microg/kg daily and r-metHuSCF 20 microg/kg daily. Two PBPC collections were performed on consecutive days starting the day the WBC count was above 7.5 x 10(3)/microl. Collection was performed between days +9 and +12 and the median number of CD34(+) cells collected was 9.9 x 10(6)/kg (1.1-53.1) and 6.6 x 10(6)/kg (1…
Muscle Inactivity and Activity Patterns after Sedentary-Time Targeted Randomized Controlled Trial
2014
Purpose: Interventions targeting sedentary time are needed. We used detailed EMG recordings to study the short-term effectiveness of simple sedentary time-targeted tailored counseling on the total physical activity spectrum. Methods: This cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted between 2011 and 2013 (InPact, ISRCTN28668090), and short-term effectiveness of counseling is reported in the present study. A total of 133 office workers volunteered to participate, from which muscle activity data were analyzed from 48 (intervention, n = 24; control, n = 24). After a lecture, face-to-face tailored counseling was used to set contractually binding goals regarding breaking up sitting periods …
The guilty, the unlucky, or the unaware? Assessing self-reported behavioral contributors and attributions on pedestrian crashes through structural eq…
2020
Introduction: Recent literature suggests that the causation of pedestrians' crashes and the contribution of safety-related behaviors within them may substantially differ compared to other road users. This study aimed to test the effect of individual factors and safety-related road behaviors on the self-reported walk- ing crashes suffered by pedestrians and, complementarily, to analyze the causes that pedestrians attrib- uted to the crashes they suffered as pedestrians during the previous five years. Method: For this cross- sectional research performed in Spain, data from a nationwide sample of 2,499 pedestrians from the 17 regions of the country were collected. Participants had a mean age o…
