"Save the Night" : light footprint, urbanism and territorial governance

2010

Our society maintains a complex relation with night, space-time often outside the diurnal cadences which facilitates the reflection, the imagination, the creation, the listening and the link with the other one, while revealing the segregation, the fear, and thus the restriction. By this research, we put compared to the urban lighting – real light project carrier of a strong symbolism – the socio-cultural, ecological and sanitary costs engendered by the artificial light. The urban lighting generates a geographical interlacing of bright imprints of differentiated scales, which we approach by various modellings, without forbidding us the sensitive analysis. We clarify, at various scales, the g…

Molecular characterization of cucumber mosaic virus isolates infecting ornamental species cultivated in the botanical garden of Bologna university.

2006

During an epidemiological survey carried out in the Botanical Garden at Bologna University, Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) has been detected by applying PAS-ELISA technique infecting some ornamental species exhibiting a severe symptomatology on the leaves. Datura innoxia Miller. showed mosaic and leaf-curling; Globularia nudicaulis L. produced narrowed leaves with a yellow mosaic and/or variegation; Eupatorium cannabinum L. showed a systemic chlorotic and/or yellow mosaic and stunting. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) were employed to characterise these CMV isolates. Total RNA was extracted from symptomatic leaf samples…

Sensory acceptability of cassava snacks nutritionally enriched on Moringa oleifera leaf powder among children from low-income households in Madagascar

2014

National audience; Ninety two percent of Malagasy population lives with less than two dollars per day. This situation contributes to undernourishment, particularly among children from low-income households: 48% of children under the age of five have stunting problem. Yet, Madagascar possesses natural food resources with high nutritional value, like leaves of Moringa oleifera (M.o.), rich on protein and different oligoelements. These natural food resources should be valorised by incorporating them into children diet, in order to help improving the balance of the diet and thus fight against malnutrition. In this study, M.o. leaf powder was added to cassava roots, which are consumed as a “secu…

Evaluation of the impact of different odour notes on typicality of caramel aroma by recombination studies

2013

Poster (1 page); International audience; Aroma is one of the main factors that contribute to the consumer acceptability of a food product. Gas Chromatography/Olfactometry (GC/O) followed by accurate quantitation and recombination studies are usually carried out to evaluate key aroma compounds. The aim of this study is to develop a new approach taking into account odor qualities and to evaluate their impact on the typicality of caramel aroma. First, 58 aroma compounds, previously identified by GC/O analyses, were sorted into 8 odorant categories: animal, caramel, sour, vegetal, roasted, floral, fruity and nutty according to GC/O descriptors. For each category, a blend of compounds was prepar…

Characterization of Chlorolignins in Bleached Kraft Pulp Mill Effluents Using Elemental Analysis and Fingerprinting by CuO Oxidation And Hplc

1994

Abstract Elemental analyses and chemical degradation techniques were applied to characterize lignin compounds in different stages of the chlorine bleaching process and in total mill effluent. Ultrafiltration was used for separation of chlorolignins into three nominal molecular weight fractions. Alkaline CuO oxidation products were analyzed by HPLC with diode array detection. Major compounds were identified by reference to authentic compounds. For comparison, native lignins (MWL), kraft lignins, and humic substances were studied as well. The oxygen, carbon and organic chlorine contents were closely similar in the various mill samples and their fractions. In all mill samples, vanillin and 6-c…

Screening for Solute Transporters in Plant Photosynthetic Membranes

2008

As compared to chloroplast envelope transporters, the field of thylakoid transporters is largely unexplored. There is evidence for several transport activities in the plant thylakoid membrane, but only a copper P-type ATPase and an ATP/ADP carrier have been so far identified at the gene level in Arabidopsis thaliana. Using in silico analyses, we have predicted the existence of approximately 15 thylakoid transporters, including phosphate transporters and cation channels. For experimental validation, we have used peptide- specific antibodies and functional analyses in heterologous system. These novel data are highly relevant to understand the transport network of the thylakoid membrane and it…

Model compound synthesis for the structure determination of new unknown planar aromatic compounds originating from pulp mill

1991

Abstract Several model compounds have been synthesized for verification of the structures of new unknown planar aromatic compounds (UPACs) observed in high-resolution gas chromatography/low-resolution mass spectrometry analyses of the polychlorodibenzodioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorodibenzofurans (PCDFs) in pulp mill products, effluents, sediments and mussels. The mass spectra of synthetic alkyl polychlorodibenzofurans (C6-PCDFs) were different, but those of alkyl polychlorobibenzyls (C5-PCBBs) were very similar compared to the spectra of UPACs.

The culturable bacterial community of frass produced by larvae of Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in the Canary island …

2012

Aims:  Larvae of the red palm weevil (RPW) Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) feed inside palm stem tissues, making galleries and producing a wet fermenting frass. We characterized the culturable bacteria associated with frass produced by tunnelling larvae inside the Canary island date palms and investigated the role of frass and gut bacteria in plant polymers breakdown. Methods and Results:  A culture-dependent method was used to isolate bacteria from frass and noninfested palm tissues. Bacterial isolates were grouped into operational taxonomic units based on polymorphisms in the ITS-PCR profiles, and representative isolates were identified by partial sequencing …
