Lipid-lowering nutraceuticals in clinical practice: position paper from an International Lipid Expert Panel
2017
In recent years, there has been growing interest in the possible use of nutraceuticals to improve and optimize dyslipidemia control and therapy. Based on the data from available studies, nutraceuticals might help patients obtain theraputic lipid goals and reduce cardiovascular residual risk. Some nutraceuticals have essential lipid-lowering properties confirmed in studies; some might also have possible positive effects on nonlipid cardiovascular risk factors and have been shown to improve early markers of vascular health such as endothelial function and pulse wave velocity. However, the clinical evidence supporting the use of a single lipid-lowering nutraceutical or a combination of them is…
Stochastic models for phytoplankton dynamics in marine ecosystems
2014
In this thesis, the stochastic advection-reaction-diffusion models are analyzed to obtain the vertical stationary spatial distributions of the main groups of picophytoplankton, which account about for 80% of total chlorophyll on average in Mediterranean Sea. In Chapter 1 we give a short presentation of the experimental and phytoplanktonic data collected during different oceanographic surveys in Mediterranean Sea. In Chapter 2 we introduce the deterministic and stochastic approaches (one-population model) adopted to describe the picoeukaryotes dynamics in Sicily Channel. Moreover, numerical results for the biomass concentration are compared with experimental data by using chi-squared goodnes…
Comparison of piezosurgery and conventional rotary instruments in schneider’s membrane sinus lifting: A pilot randomized trial
2020
Background The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the postoperative effects of the piezoelectric device and conventional rotary instruments in Schneider’s membrane sinus lifting procedure. Material and Methods Twenty patients requiring bilateral maxillary bone graft augmentation in the posterior maxillary region were selected. Piezoelectric surgery was performed on one side and conventional surgery with a rotary diamond bur on the other. Postoperative pain, swelling, edema, and mouth opening were evaluated at one hour and two and seven days after the procedures. All variables were submitted to Friedman or Wilcoxon tests at a 5% significance level. Results The comparison between gro…

Post-processing of Pixel and Object-Based Land Cover Classifications of Very High Spatial Resolution Images
2020
The state of the art is plenty of classification methods. Pixel-based methods include the most traditional ones. Although these achieved high accuracy when classifying remote sensing images, some limits emerged with the advent of very high-resolution images that enhanced the spectral heterogeneity within a class. Therefore, in the last decade, new classification methods capable of overcoming these limits have undergone considerable development. Within this research, we compared the performances of an Object-based and a Pixel-Based classification method, the Random Forests (RF) and the Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA), respectively. Their ability to quantify the extension and the perimeter…
The diode laser as coadyuvant therapy in the non-surgical conventional treatment of peri-implant mucositis: A systematic review and meta-analysis
2020
Background The present study systematically reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCT) to investigate the effect of diode laser therapy in the management of peri-implant mucositis. Material and Methods The electronic databases were searched until January 2020. Outcome measures were bleeding on probing (BOP), plaque index (PI) and probing depth (PD). The addressed PICO question was: Is the diode laser therapy effective reducing the signs of inflammation as an adjunctive element in the non-surgical treatment of peri-implant mucositis?. Results Eight randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were included in the systematic review for qualitative synthesis and three in the meta-analysis for quantitati…
Genetic polymorphism and taxonomic infrastructure of the Pleurotus eryngii species-complex as determined by RAPD analysis, isozyme profiles and ecomo…
2001
The Pleurotus eryngii species-complex includes populations of choice edible mushrooms, growing in the greater Mediterranean area in close association with different genera of plants of the family Apiaceae. Their distinct host-specialization served as the principal criterion for the discrimination of several taxa; however, the genetic relationships among the various P. eryngii ecotypes remain ambiguous. In the present study, 46 Pleurotus strains with a wide range of geographical origins were isolated from Eryngium spp., Ferula communis, Cachrys ferulacea, Thapsia garganica and Elaeoselinum asclepium subsp. asclepium, and were subjected to isozyme and random amplified polymorphic DNA-PCR (RAP…
Ship Roll Motion under Stochastic Agencies Using Path Integral Method
2009
The response of ship roll oscillation under random ice impulsive loads modeled by Poisson arrival process is very important in studying the safety of ships navigation in cold regions. Under both external and parametric random excitations the evolution of the probability density function of roll motion is evaluated using the path integral (PI) approach. The PI method relies on the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation, which governs the response transition probability density functions at two close intervals of time. Once the response probability density function at an early close time is specified, its value at later close time can be evaluated. The PI method is first demonstrated via simple dynamica…
A Monte Carlo Study of Knots in Long Double-Stranded DNA Chains.
2016
We determine knotting probabilities and typical sizes of knots in double-stranded DNA for chains of up to half a million base pairs with computer simulations of a coarse-grained bead-stick model: Single trefoil knots and composite knots which include at least one trefoil as a prime factor are shown to be common in DNA chains exceeding 250,000 base pairs, assuming physiologically relevant salt conditions. The analysis is motivated by the emergence of DNA nanopore sequencing technology, as knots are a potential cause of erroneous nucleotide reads in nanopore sequencing devices and may severely limit read lengths in the foreseeable future. Even though our coarse-grained model is only based on …
Machine Learning Regression Approaches for Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) Retrieval with S2-MSI and S3-OLCI Simulated Data
2018
The colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) variable is the standard measure of humic substance in waters optics. CDOM is optically characterized by its spectral absorption coefficient, a C D O M at at reference wavelength (e.g., ≈ 440 nm). Retrieval of CDOM is traditionally done using bio-optical models. As an alternative, this paper presents a comparison of five machine learning methods applied to Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 simulated reflectance ( R r s ) data for the retrieval of CDOM: regularized linear regression (RLR), random forest regression (RFR), kernel ridge regression (KRR), Gaussian process regression (GPR) and support vector machines (SVR). Two different datasets of radiative t…
