Effect of pistachio on brachial artery diameter and flow-mediated dilatation: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized, controlled-feeding…

2017

Background: Results of previous clinical trials evaluating the effect of pistachio supplementation on endothelial reactivity (ER) are controversial. Aims: We aimed to assess the impact of pistachio on ER through systematic review of literature and meta-analysis of available randomized, controlled-feeding clinical studies (RCTs). Methods: The literature search included SCOPUS, PubMed-Medline, ISI Web of Science and Google Scholar databases up to 1st August 2017 to identify RCTs investigating the impact of pistachio on ER. Two independent reviewers extracted data on study characteristics, methods and outcomes. Overall, the impact of pistachio on ER was reported in 4 trials. Results: The meta-…

Efficacy and cost-effectiveness of the UltraCision harmonic scalpel in thyroid surgery: an analysis of 200 cases in a randomized trial.

2004

Thyroid surgery technique has undergone very few changes in the last century. The UltraCision harmonic scalpel (UHS) (Smithfield, RI) has been widely used in laparoscopic surgery and is documented to be safe and fast for cutting and coagulating tissue. We studied whether the use of the UHS could have advantages in thyroid surgery in terms of operative time, length of hospitalization, morbidity, and general costs. Our study was a prospective randomized trial of thyroidectomies and lobectomies performed for benign thyroid diseases in an endocrine surgery unit between February 2001 and July 2002. Patients were randomized in two groups: group A (n=100) underwent thyroidectomy using UHS and group…

Total laparoscopic hysterectomy versus total abdominal hysterectomy: an assessment of the learning curve in a prospective randomized study.

1999

The present randomized study was undertaken in order to compare the short-term results between total laparoscopic hysterectomy and abdominal hysterectomy in a centre with experience in laparoscopic surgery. From January 1997 to September 1998 inclusive, 102 women aged 44-71 years were randomly assigned to either total laparoscopic hysterectomy (n = 51 patients) or abdominal hysterectomy (n = 51 patients). The patients' demographic characteristics were similar in both groups. Average intra-operative blood loss was lower in laparoscopic hysterectomy than in abdominal hysterectomy (P </= 0. 001). The average time employed for laparoscopic hysterectomy was 104.1 +/- 26.98 min; according to the …

Role of Ovarian Suspension in Preventing Postsurgical Ovarian Adhesions in Patients with Stage III-IV Pelvic Endometriosis: A Systematic Review.

2018

Endometriosis is a benign complex gynecological condition with high morbidity that affects women of reproductive age. Pelvic adhesion formation represents a serious clinical challenge in the management of patients with endometriosis. Several interventions have been proposed over the last few years aiming to reduce post-operative ovarian adhesions formation. The aim of this study is to summarize the evidence of the efficacy of ovarian suspension in the prevention of post-operative ovarian adhesions formation in women undergoing laparoscopic surgery for stage III-IV endometriosis. The research was conducted using electronic databases. A review of the abstracts of all references retrieved from…

Supplemental Perioperative Oxygen and the Risk of Surgical Wound Infection: A Randomized Controlled Trial

2006

ABSTRACT Three hundred patients were enrolled in a double-blind, randomized, controlled study designed to investigate the ability of supplemental perioperative oxygen to reduce wound infection. Participants were age 18 to 80 years, had no coexisting serious medical conditions, and were scheduled to undergo elective colorectal surgery at one of 14 participating hospitals in Spain. No patients undergoing minor or laparoscopic surgery were included. Anesthesia and antibiotic prophylaxis were standardized for the study. Patients were randomized by computer-generated codes to receive an oxygen/air mixture of 30% or 80% fraction of inspired oxygen (F102) intraoperatively and postoperatively for 6…

Gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogue or dienogest plus estradiol valerate to prevent pain recurrence after laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis…

2015

Objectives To evaluate the efficacy of dienogest + estradiol valerate (E2V) and gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogue (GnRH-a) in reducing recurrence of pain in patients with chronic pelvic pain due to laparoscopically diagnosed and treated endometriosis. Design Multi-center, prospective, randomized study. Setting Three university departments of obstetrics and gynecology in Italy. Population Seventy-eight women who underwent laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis combined with chronic pelvic pain. Methods Post-operative administration of dienogest + E2V for 9 months (group 1) or GnRH-a monthly for 6 months (group 2). Main outcome measures A visual analogue scale was used to test intensit…

Use of Anesthetics Associated to Vasoconstrictors for Dentistry in Patients With Cardiopathies. Review of the Literature Published in the Last Decade

2012

Objective: The use of local anesthetics associated to vasoconstrictor agents in dentistry is thoroughly justified and is widely extended, but we cannot ignore the fact that anesthetic infiltration poses risk of complications throughout the dental treatment period. The objective of the present review is to document the reported effects the use of the local anesthetics most widely employed in dentistry, with or without association to vasoconstrictor agents may have in patients with any sort of cardiopathy. Study Design: We have searched for randomized clinical trials on the assessment of the cardiovascular effects of local anesthetics used in dentistry, without limits as regards age or sex, c…

Role of 0.5 M mannitol as an adjuvant with lidocaine with or without epinephrine for inferior alveolar nerve block : a randomized control trial

2019

Background The most commonly used local anesthetic in dentistry is lidocaine. For decades, mannitol is the most widely used agent in the management of raised intracranial pressure and as prophylaxis against acute renal failure surgeries. Material and Methods 120 patients were randomly divided into four groups, 30 patients in each group. Group A was administered 2% lidocaine with 1:80000 epinephrine; group B, 2% lidocaine with 1:80000 epinephrine and 0.5 M mannitol; group C, 2% lidocaine and 0.5 M mannitol; and group D (control group), 2% lidocaine for achieving local anesthesia. Extraction of lower erupted tooth was done under inferior alveolar nerve block. Parameters taken were onset of an…

Clinical efficacy of a bleaching enzyme-based toothpaste. A double-blind controlled clinical trial.

2015

Abstract Objectives To assess the efficacy of a bleaching enzyme-based toothpaste. Material and methods A randomized clinical trial was carried out, comprising 48 participants with teeth exhibiting color A3 or higher according to the Vita Classical guide. One-half of the sample received the bleaching enzyme-based toothpaste (White Kin ® ), while the other received placebo toothpaste. Both products were supplied in identical containers and had the same composition except for the active components. The teeth color was measured with a spectrophotometer. The patients were instructed to brush their teeth three times a day during 3 min with the assigned product, during 12 weeks. The color measure…

The effect of orally administered probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri -containing tablets in peri-implant mucositis: a double-blind randomized controlled…

2015

Background and Objectives Probiotics create a biofilm and protect the oral tissues against the action of periodontal pathogenic bacteria. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the oral probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri Prodentis upon the peri-implant health of edentulous patients with dental implants and peri-implant mucositis, establishing comparisons vs implants without peri-implant disease. Material and Methods A double-blind, placebo-controlled, prospective cross-over study was made. The patients were all edentulous and were divided into two groups, (A) no peri-implant disease, and (B) peri-implant mucositis affecting one or more implants. Patients with peri-implantitis wer…
