IMAGINE: A Cold Neutron Imaging Station at the Laboratoire Léon Brillouin

2015

International audience; A second cold neutron imaging station has been open to users at the Laboratoire Léon Brillouin. The station is designed for high resolution neutron imaging and tomography. The typical field of view is 100x100 mm2 with a spatial resolution of 100 μm. Betterspatial resolutions (∼50 μm) can be achieved when reducing the field of view down to 30x30mm2. The L/D ratio can be varied from 200 to1000with pinhole sizes ranging from 20 to7 mm. Future upgrades will provide capabilities for energy resolved measurements using either a velocity selector or a double crystal monochromator. The possibility to perform polarized neutron experiments will also be provided next year.

Electron Holography for Electric and Magnetic Field Measurements and Its Application for Nanophysics

2011

Abstract Texture constitutes one of the fundamental properties of objects besides color and shape. In several image analysis applications, it is often the only exploitable quality of objects. As such, it has been studied, described, segmented, synthesized, or in short, analyzed extensively. Among the plethora of texture description methods, mathematical morphology deserves special attention as it excels at the exploitation of spatial relationships among pixels, rendering it inherently suitable for texture description. In this chapter, we focus on morphological texture description methods for grey-scale and color images in an effort to spread the advantages of this framework in the context o…

A dose-ranging study of indacaterol in obstructive airways disease, with a tiotropium comparison.

2008

This dose-ranging study assessed the bronchodilator efficacy and tolerability of indacaterol, a novel once-daily inhaled beta2-agonist, in subjects clinically diagnosed with COPD. Comparative data with tiotropium were collected. In the double-blind, core period of the study, 635 subjects with COPD (prebronchodilator FEV(1)40% of predicted and > or =1.0L; FEV1/FVC <70%) were randomized to receive indacaterol 50, 100, 200 or 400microg or placebo via multi-dose dry powder inhaler, or indacaterol 400microg via single-dose dry powder inhaler, once daily for 7 days. After completing double-blind treatment and washout, a subset of subjects from each treatment group entered an open-label extension …

Multiscale Model Selection for High-Frequency Financial Data of a Large Tick Stock by Means of the Jensen–Shannon Metric

2014

Modeling financial time series at different time scales is still an open challenge. The choice of a suitable indicator quantifying the distance between the model and the data is therefore of fundamental importance for selecting models. In this paper, we propose a multiscale model selection method based on the Jensen–Shannon distance in order to select the model that is able to better reproduce the distribution of price changes at different time scales. Specifically, we consider the problem of modeling the ultra high frequency dynamics of an asset with a large tick-to-price ratio. We study the price process at different time scales and compute the Jensen–Shannon distance between the original…

Drift of the Earth’s Principal Axes of Inertia from GRACE and Satellite Laser Ranging Data

2020

The location of the Earth’s principal axes of inertia is a foundation for all the theories and solutions of its rotation, and thus has a broad effect on many fields, including astronomy, geodesy, and satellite-based positioning and navigation systems. That location is determined by the second-degree Stokes coefficients of the geopotential. Accurate solutions for those coefficients were limited to the stationary case for many years, but the situation improved with the accomplishment of Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), and nowadays several solutions for the time-varying geopotential have been derived based on gravity and satellite laser ranging data, with time resolutions reac…

Extraction of Airways from CT (EXACT'09)

2012

Contains fulltext : 107854.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) This paper describes a framework for establishing a reference airway tree segmentation, which was used to quantitatively evaluate fifteen different airway tree extraction algorithms in a standardized manner. Because of the sheer difficulty involved in manually constructing a complete reference standard from scratch, we propose to construct the reference using results from all algorithms that are to be evaluated. We start by subdividing each segmented airway tree into its individual branch segments. Each branch segment is then visually scored by trained observers to determine whether or not it is a correctly segmented part o…

A Simple Noise Model with Memory for Biological Systems

2005

A noise source model, consisting of a pulse sequence at random times with memory, is presented. By varying the memory we can obtain variable randomness of the stochastic process. The delay time between pulses, i. e. the noise memory, produces different kinds of correlated noise ranging from white noise, without delay, to quasi-periodical process, with delay close to the average period of the pulses. The spectral density is calculated. This type of noise could be useful to describe physical and biological systems where some delay is present. In particular it could be useful in population dynamics. A simple dynamical model for epidemiological infection with this noise source is presented. We …

Pikosekunžu precizitātes laika intervālu mērīšanas un analīzes skaitlisko metožu izstrāde satelītu lāzerlokācijā pielietojumam

2002

Lāzerlokācijas metožu izmantošana zinātniskās programmās, kuras saistītas ar globālās ģeocentrisko koordinātu sistēmas definēšanu, Zemes rotācijas tekošo parametru noteikšanu, Zemes polu kustības mērījumiem, kontinentu dreifa noteikšanu, iespējamo zemestrīču prognozēšanu, prasa ļoti augstas precizitātes (0.5-2 cm) satelītu attālumu mērījumu rezultātus. Eksistējošie lāzeru tālmēri, daudzos gadījumos, nepilnīgi atbilst šīm prasībām, dodot precizitāti ap 4 cm. Risinot minētos lokācijas uzdevumus, liela loma ir laika intervālu analizatoru augstai izšķiršanas spējai. Satelītu lokācijā laika intervāla atsevišķa mērījuma vidējā kvadrātiskā kļūda nedrīkst pārsniegt dažus desmitus pikosekunžu, pie i…

Performance potential for simulating spin models on GPU

2012

Graphics processing units (GPUs) are recently being used to an increasing degree for general computational purposes. This development is motivated by their theoretical peak performance, which significantly exceeds that of broadly available CPUs. For practical purposes, however, it is far from clear how much of this theoretical performance can be realized in actual scientific applications. As is discussed here for the case of studying classical spin models of statistical mechanics by Monte Carlo simulations, only an explicit tailoring of the involved algorithms to the specific architecture under consideration allows to harvest the computational power of GPU systems. A number of examples, ran…
