Frankenstein or the modern theurgist, the reception of Hermetic magic in Mary Shelley’s work

2017

This work considers the relationship between the novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus and nineteenth-century esotericism with Hermeticism and its magical practices. We will focus on the influence of theurgy, a very popular magical-religious practice among the Neoplatonic movements of the first centuries of our era. In its Hermetic form, the art of animating statues through the attraction of their internal divine powers stands out. On the one hand, we will present an analysis of the path that this unique practice follows until it reaches Frankenstein. On the other hand, we will deal with the reception of the motive in this work.

Two-variable First-Order Logic with Counting in Forests

2018

We consider an extension of two-variable, first-order logic with counting quantifiers and arbitrarily many unary and binary predicates, in which one distinguished predicate is interpreted as the mother-daughter relation in an unranked forest. We show that both the finite satisfiability and the general satisfiability problems for the extended logic are decidable in NExpTime. We also show that the decision procedure for finite satisfiability can be extended to the logic where two distinguished predicates are interpreted as the mother-daughter relations in two independent forests.

Toward Approximate GML Retrieval Based on Structural and Semantic Characteristics

2010

International audience; GML is emerging as the new standard for representing geographic information in GISs on the Web, allowing the encoding of structurally and semantically rich geographic data in self describing XML-based geographic entities. In this study, we address the problem of approximate querying and ranked results for GML data and provide a method for GML query evaluation. Our method consists of two main contributions. First, we propose a tree model for representing GML queries and data collections. Then, we introduce a GML retrieval method based on the concept of tree edit distance as an efficient means for comparing semi-structured data. Our approach allows the evaluation of bo…

Plusieurs raison…

Addition of NMDA-receptor antagonist MK801 during oxygen/glucose deprivation moderately attenuates the upregulation of glucose uptake after subsequen…

2011

During stroke the blood–brain barrier (BBB) is damaged which can result in vasogenic brain edema and inflammation. The reduced blood supply leads to decreased delivery of oxygen and glucose to affected areas of the brain. Oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD) can cause upregulation of glucose uptake of brain endothelial cells. In this letter, we investigated the influence of MK801, a non-competitive inhibitor of the NMDA-receptor, on the regulation of the glucose uptake and of the main glucose transporters glut1 and sglt1 in murine BBB cell line cerebEND during OGD. mRNA expression of glut1 was upregulated 68.7- fold after 6 h OGD, which was significantly reduced by 10 μM MK801 to 28.9-fold.…
