Behavior-based personalization in web search

2016

Personalized search approaches tailor search results to users' current interests, so as to help improve the likelihood of a user finding relevant documents for their query. Previous work on personalized search focuses on using the content of the user's query and of the documents clicked to model the user's preference. In this paper we focus on a different type of signal: We investigate the use of behavioral information for the purpose of search personalization. That is, we consider clicks and dwell time for reranking an initially retrieved list of documents. In particular, we (i) investigate the impact of distributions of users and queries on document reranking; (ii) estimate the relevance …

Using PageRank for non-personalized default rankings in dynamic markets

2017

Abstract Default ranking algorithms are used to generate non-personalized product rankings for standard consumers, for example, on landing pages of online stores. Default rankings are created without any information about the consumers’ preferences. This paper proposes using the product centrality ranking algorithm (PCRA), which solves some problems of existing default ranking algorithms: Existing approaches either have low accuracy, because they rely on only one product attribute, or they are unable to estimate ranks for new or updated products, because they use past consumer behavior, such as previous sales or ratings. The PCRA uses the PageRank centrality of products in a product dominat…

Key Information Systems Management Issues in Estonia for the 2000s and A Comparative Analysis

2006

AbstractThis study reports key information system (IS) management issues in Estonia, for a second time since 1993. The study enlists the views of knowledgeable practitioners from both the information technology (IT) and non-IT (business managers) fields. The primary objective was to compare and contrast the findings in the previous study with the present effort. Other secondary objectives included investigating the views across professional classifications and sectors. Further, a comparison between Estonia (an emerging economy) and Norway (a developed country) was made. The findings of the study indicate the following: 1) the past decade has produced salient changes in the ranking of key IS…

Increasing offensive or defensive efficiency? An analysis of Italian and Spanish football☆

2009

This paper analyses technical efficiency of Italian and Spanish football during three recent seasons, to shed light on the sport performance of professional football clubs. To achieve this we have used mathematical optimisation methods, particularly DEA models, which enable the calculation of the frontiers of efficient production. Some of the most interesting results are the following. Firstly, the Spanish league is clearly more homogeneous and competitive than the Italian league. Secondly, to obtain a better classification in the Italian league, it is much more important to improve defensive, rather than offensive, efficiency. The popular maxim holds in Italy: the best attack begins with a…

ExtMiner : Combining multiple ranking and clustering algorithms for structured document retrieval

2006

This paper introduces ExtMiner, a platform and potential tool for information management in SMEs (small & medium-size enterprise), or for organizational workgroups. ExtMiner supports interactive and iterative clustering of documents. It provides users with a visual cluster and list views at the same time, supporting iterative search process. ExtMiner may also be applied as a platform for research on retrieval fusion, since it combines search, clustering and visualization algorithms. ExtMiner was evaluated with three document collections. Although the findings were encouraging the user interface and performance with large document repositories need further development. peerReviewed

On some flaws of university rankings: The example of the SCImago report

2012

International audience; Using France as our main example, we show there is a much scope for improving the SCImago ranking. We detect problems of nomenclature, double affiliation, aggregation and of bias toward large public-funded research organizations. The output per scholar is more important than the output per organization. The examples we cite suggest that only detailed knowledge of the situation can help in addressing the issue and take us beyond any automatic reading of the metadata.

Creating Individual Journal Rankings Based on a Community Approach

2010

Selecting appropriate publication outlets is crucial to any researcher. Journal rankings can be used to guide the selection, but their usefulness may be limited for particular audiences. In this paper, it is argued that especially young researchers and researchers in interdisciplinary fields can benefit from targeting research efforts to a specific community. This can be facilitated by an individually built journal ranking that exploits a community building perspective and by a more transparent process of use. The approach introduced here is based on an analysis of both traditional journal rankings and behavior of academic communities. As a result, we present a procedure for building and us…
