The pore structure of compacted and partly saturated MX-80 bentonite at different dry densities

2014

Compacted MX-80 bentonite is a potential backfill material in radioactive-waste repositories. Pore space in MX-80 has been the subject of considerable debate. 3D reconstructions of the pore space based on tomographic methods could provide new insights into the nature of the pore space of compacted bentonites. To date, few such reconstructions have been done because of problems with the preparation of bentonite samples for electron microscopy. The nanoscale intergranular pore space was investigated here by cryo-Focused Ion Beam nanotomography (FIB-nt) applied to previously high-pressure frozen MX-80 bentonite samples. This approach allowed a tomographic investigation of the in situ microstru…

Synthesis and pharmacological evaluation of 2'-hydroxychalcones and flavones as inhibitors of inflammatory mediators generation.

1995

2'-Hydroxy-3,4-dimethoxy-3',4'-dimethylchalcone (3a), 2'-hydroxy-3',4',3,4-tetramethoxychalcone (3b), and their corresponding flavones, 3',4'-dimethoxy-7,8-dimethylflavone (4a) and 3',4',7,8-tetramethoxyflavone (4b), were prepared from 3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acid and the respective phenol. The four compounds inhibited enzymic lipid peroxidation and showed weak peroxyl scavenging activity. They also reduced LTB 4 release from human neutrophils stimulated by A23187. The chalcone 3b was the only compound able to inhibit in a concentration-dependent way, synovial human recombinant phospholipase A 2 activity, human platelet TXB 2 generation, and human neutrophil degranulation. This chalcone exert…

Sorafenib perpetuates cellular anti-cancer effector functions by modulating the cross talk between macrophages and natural killer cells.

2012

Alternatively polarized macrophages (Mϕ) shape the microenvironment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and temper anticancer immune responses. We investigated if sorafenib alters the HCC microenvironment by restoring classical macrophage polarization and triggering tumor-directed natural killer (NK) cell responses. In vivo experiments were conducted with sorafenib (25 mg/kg)-treated C57BL/6 wildtype as well as hepatitis B virus (HBV) and lymphotoxin transgenic mice with and without HCC. Monocyte-derived Mϕ or tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) isolated from HCC tissue were treated with sorafenib (0.07-5.0 μg/mL) and cocultured with autologous NK cells. Mϕ and NK cell activation was analyzed …

Performance of the DELPHI detector

1996

DELPHI (DEtector with Lepton, Photon and Hadron Identification) is a detector for e(+)e(-) physics, designed to provide high granularity over a 4 pi solid angle, allowing an effective particle identification, It has been operating at the LEP (Large Electron-Positron) collider at CERN since 1989. This article reviews its performance.

Characterization of rubberized asphalt for railway sub-ballast. Improvements in the mix-design, performance features and rational methodology of HMA_…

2018

(STR) can be incorporated into asphalt mixtures in two different methods, which are referred to as the wet-dry process. The blending of recycled rubber (CRM) with asphalt has been used for years, and several manufacturing processes have been developed in Europe as well as in the USA. The use of a bituminous sub-ballast layer has been pointed out as an exciting alternative to the granular sub-ballast design traditionally applied in most railroad tracks. Frequently, unbound granular materials are replaced by bituminous sub-ballast that provide additional benefits to the subgrade protection. Much research has been conducted on finding other alternative material to be used as a modifier in asph…

Stimulation of Wound Revascularization by Adenosine Receptor Activation

2010

Adenosine is an endogenous mediator implicated in wound healing. The exact mechanisms and receptors involved are still under evaluation. We have observed that topical application of a selective adenosine A2A receptor agonist promotes wound healing in experimental animals, both healthy and with impaired healing. Histological analysis revealed that adenosine promoted granulation tissue formation, with increased cellularity, matrix deposition, and vessel density. Adenosine may exert effects on many different cell types that finally result in promotion of angiogenesis and, furthermore, homing of endothelial precursor cells into sites of injury. We will review the effect of adenosine receptor ac…

A computational framework for microstructural modelling of polycrystalline materials with damage and failure

2017

In the present thesis, a computational framework for the analysis of the deformation and damage phenomena occurring at the scale of the constituent grains of polycrystalline materials is presented. The research falls within the area of Computational Micro-mechanics that has been attracting remarkable technological interest due to the capability of explaining the link between the micro-structural details of heterogenous materials and their macroscopic response, and the possibility of fine-tuning the macroscopic properties of engineered components through the manipulation of their micro-structure. However, despite the significant developments in the field of materials characterisation and the…

The nutritional composition of selected wild edible mushrooms from Sicily (southern Italy)

2011

The wide consumption of wild fungi by the local population is the basis for an evaluation of the as yet unknown nutritional composition of some selected species. Wild edible mushrooms (Fistulina hepatica, Infundibulicybe geotropa, Laetiporus sulphureus, Macrolepiota procera var. procera and Suillus granulatus) were collected in a number of Sicilian (southern Italian) forest ecosystems and analysed according to standard methodologies of fungal analysis, for their basic composition (ash, water, protein, fat, carbohydrate and vitamin). The results showed that the investigated mushrooms could be suggested as a source of nutritional elements for the human diet.

Calretinin/PSA-NCAM immunoreactive granule cells after hippocampal damage produced by kainic acid and DEDTC treatment in mouse.

2003

There is a dramatic increase in the number of lightly immunoreactive calretinin cells in the granular layer of the dentate gyrus of the mouse hippocampus 1 day after excitotoxic injury using kainic acid combined with the zinc chelator diethyldithiocarbamate. At 7 days after treatment, these cells are strongly immunoreactive for calretinin and for the polysialated form of the glycoprotein neural cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM). The reexpression of calretinin and PSA-NCAM after treatment corresponds well with the loss of input from the damaged hilar mossy cells. These cells could be considered immature granule cells since they are immunoreactive to markers for immature cells such as PSA-NCA…

Aerobic Granular Sludge for Leachate Treatment

2014

The treatment of municipal landfill leachate by means of aerobic granular sequencing batch reactors (GSBRs) was investigated. The paper reports the results from an experimental campaign lasted 100 days, which has been divided into three periods: cultivation of granular sludge (70 days), operation with semi-fresh (15 day) and diluted landfill leachate (15 day). Two different GSBR configurations were used: a Sequencing Batch Bubble Column reactor and a Sequencing Batch Airlift Reactor. All reactors were operated at Volume Loading Rates (VLRs) between 4.8 and 7.2 g COD /(m 3 ·d). The Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal efficiency varied between 80% and 90% under operation with synthetic waste…
