Facing the dawn of immunotherapy for hepatocellular carcinoma.

In this study, administration of tremelimumab was accompanied by a tolerable toxicity profile, most frequently including skin rash (65%), fatigue (55%), and anorexia (50%). During the initial course of tremilimumab, a transient increase of serum transaminase activity was observed. Hepatotoxicity did not impair liver function, even in the context of Child-Pugh B cirrhosis and hepatitis C. Therapy was stopped in 3 patients before tumor response evaluation was completed due to tremilimumab-related diarrhea or clinical deterioration, which was not associated with the treatment regimen. Development of systemic lupus erythematosus in a patient with selective complete C1q deficiency

A 7-year-old male with recurrent erythematous and desquamated skin lesions and respiratory infections was diagnosed as selective complete C1q deficiency following detailed studies of the complement system. His asymptomatic sister also had selective complete C1q deficiency. During a follow up period of 3 years, his skin lesions persisted, he suffered from recurrent bronchopneumonias and glomerulonephritis developed. Renal function deteriorated with the appearance of anti-DNA antibodies. Renal biopsy was consistent with systemic lupus erythematosus. Reexamining Different Factors of the Resonance-Enhanced High-Order Harmonic Generation in Atomic and Nanoparticle Laser-Induced Tin Plasmas

We reexamine the resonance enhancement of a single harmonic emission during the propagation of ultrafast pulses through atomic and nanoparticle tin-containing laser-induced plasma (LIP). We compare the single atomic Sn and Sn nanoparticle plasmas to demonstrate a distinction in the enhancement factor of the single harmonic in the case of fixed and tunable near-infrared pulses. The analysis of the dynamics of Sn LIP shows the range of optimal delays between heating and driving pulses (130–180 ns), at which the maximal harmonic yield can be achieved. Broadband tuning of a long-cavity all-fiber mode locked Thulium-doped fiber laser using an acousto-optic bandpass filter

A long-cavity passively mode-locked thulium-doped all-fiber laser is reported incorporating a tapered acousto-optic tunable bandpass filter (AOTBF). The operation of the AOTBF relies on the intermodal coupling between core and cladding modes when a flexural acoustic wave propagates along an 80-microm tapered fiber. The filter works in transmission and exhibits a 3-dB bandwidth of 9.02 nm with an insertion loss of 3.4 dB. The laser supports ultrashort pulse generation at a low repetition rate of 784.93 kHz. Optical pulses with 2.43 nm of optical bandwidth and 2.1 ps pulse duration were obtained in a broad tuning range from 1824.77 to 1905.16 nm.

Orbital Rashba effect in a surface-oxidized Cu film

2020

Recent experimental observation of an unexpectedly large current-induced spin-orbit torque in surface oxidized Cu on top of a ferromagnet pointed to a possibly prominent role of the orbital Rashba effect (ORE) in this system. Here, we use first principles methods to investigate the ORE in a system of oxygen monolayer deposited on top of a Cu(111) film. We show that surface oxidization of the Cu film leads to a gigantic enhancement of the ORE near the Fermi energy. The resulting chiral orbital texture in the momentum space is exceptionally strong, reaching as much as $\ensuremath{\sim}0.5\ensuremath{\hbar}$ in magnitude. Mechanism for ultrafast electric-field driven skyrmion nucleation

We show how a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can be generated in an ultrathin metal film from a femtosecond pulse in electric field. This interaction does not require structural inversion-symmetry breaking, and its amplitude can be tuned depending on the amplitude of the field. We perform first-principles calculations to estimate the strength of the field-induced magnetoelectric coupling for ferromagnetic Fe, Co, and Ni, and antiferromagnetic Mn, as well as FePt and MnPt alloys. Optical Diagnostics with Ultrafast and Strong Field Raman Techniques

In this chapter, we will discuss some coherent techniques, namely Raman Induced Polarization Spectroscopy (RIPS) and femtosecond Coherent Raman Anti-Stokes Spectroscopy (fs-CARS). We will demonstrate their ability to be used as non-invasive optical diagnostic tools for temperature, density, or concentration measurements, as well as a means of testing collision induced energy transfer models (in a low field regime), and studying the so-called inhomogeneous lineshape effects that are particularly enhanced in the case of hydrogen. Experimental Observation of Strong Exciton Effects in Graphene Nanoribbons

Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with atomically precise width and edge structures are a promising class of nanomaterials for optoelectronics, thanks to their semiconducting nature and high mobility of charge carriers. Understanding the fundamental static optical properties and ultrafast dynamics of charge carrier generation in GNRs is essential for optoelectronic applications.
