Cryopreservation of Digitalis obscura selected genotypes by encapsulation-dehydration

Shoot-tips from several genotypes of the cardenolide-producing perennial shrub Digitalis obscura L. were successfully cryopreserved using the encapsulation-dehydration technique. Precultivation on MS medium containing 0.5 M sucrose, followed by 2.5 h dehydration (final weight 30 %) induced shoot regrowth in 42 % of cryopreserved shoot-tips. Cold-hardening of the in vitro cultures before sucrose treatment dramatically increased shoot recovery up to 86 %. The optimized cryopreservation protocol was then employed using different shoot cultures from five D. obscura genotypes. Adventitious buds were induced on isolated immature cotyledons of Pinus pinea L. in the presence of benzyladenine (BA). The response to different BA concentrations also depended upon the culture medium used (modified MS, SH and GD). A wide range of BA concentrations (5, 25 or 50 μM) can be applied to the GD and SH media, which are the media with the lower nitrogen content, without damaging effects. In the MS medium, which has the highest nitrogen concentration, the range of BA that can be applied was narrower and the highest BA concentration was lethal. Single-shot ultrafast laser processing of high-aspect-ratio nanochannels using elliptical Bessel beams

Ultrafast lasers have revolutionized material processing, opening a wealth of new applications in many areas of science. A recent technology that allows the cleaving of transparent materials via non-ablative processes is based on focusing and translating a high-intensity laser beam within a material to induce a well-defined internal stress plane. This then enables material separation without debris generation. Here, we use a non-diffracting beam engineered to have a transverse elliptical spatial profile to generate high aspect ratio elliptical channels in glass of dimension 350 nm x 710 nm, and subsequent cleaved surface uniformity at the sub-micron level.

Dynamical amplification of electric polarization through nonlinear phononics in 2D SnTe

Ultrafast optical control of ferroelectricity using intense terahertz fields has attracted significant interest. Here we show that the nonlinear interactions between two optical phonons in SnTe, a two-dimensional in-plane ferroelectric material, enables a dynamical amplification of the electric polarization within subpicoseconds time domain. Our first-principles time-dependent simulations show that the infrared-active out-of-plane phonon mode, pumped to nonlinear regimes, spontaneously generates in-plane motions, leading to rectified oscillations in the in-plane electric polarization. This work studies the teenage pedestrian–sport utility vehicle (SUV) crash; injury to the vital parts of the body, such as the head and chest, and to the femur is evaluated. More advanced injury criteria are applied, as provided in the rules. The multibody technique is applied by making use of SimWise software and of the teenager anthropomorphic model, the use of which is now consolidated. Head injury criterion (HIC) is used for the head, thoracic trauma index (TTI) criterion for the thorax in the case of side impact and 3 ms criterion in the case of frontal impact, while the force criterion is used for the femur. Observation of an excitonic Mott transition through ultrafast core-cum-conduction photoemission spectroscopy

Time-resolved soft-X-ray photoemission spectroscopy is used to simultaneously measure the ultrafast dynamics of core-level spectral functions and excited states upon excitation of excitons in WSe$_2$. We present a many-body approximation for the Green's function, which excellently describes the transient core-hole spectral function. The relative dynamics of excited-state signal and core levels reveals a delayed core-hole renormalization due to screening by excited quasi-free carriers, revealing an excitonic Mott transition. Regeneration of Sideritis angustifolia (Labiatae) Plants from Single Cell Cultures

Summary Mechanically isolated cells from hypocotyl-derived calli of Sideritis angustifolia Lag. were inoculated on agar-solidified Murashige and Skoog (MS) nutrient medium containing CH and different concentrations and combinations of NAA and BA. Isolated cells underwent continued divisions giving rise to calli after 30 days of culture. Best results were obtained when medium was supplemented with 0.5 μM NAA and 4.4 or 8.8 μM BA or with 5 μM NAA and 4.4μM BA.
