Abstract Ionic liquids are dual modifiers composed by a large anion and a large cation, which interact with both the hydrophobic alkyl-bonded phase and the anionic residual silanols in C18 columns. The deactivation of the silanol groups has important implications on the chromatographic analysis of basic drugs, being the improvement of peak profiles and shorter retention times the most noticeable features. In reversed-phase liquid chromatography in the absence of additives, cationic basic compounds give rise to broad and asymmetrical peaks as a result of ionic interactions with residual free silanols on silica-based stationary phases. Ionic liquids (ILs), added to the mobile phase, have been suggested as alternatives to amines to block the activity of silanols. Among the different compounds used in DFSA assaults, 4-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) is one of the most elusive due to its physical and biological characteristics. Determination of sialic acid and gangliosides in biological samples and dairy products: A review

Gangliosides are sphingolipids containing one or more moieties of sialic acid in their structure. Both gangliosides and sialic acid are bioactive compounds related to animal physiology. Due to their biological relevance, analytical methods adapted to each type of matrix have been developed over time. The present study reviews the main methods applied to the analysis of sialic acid and gangliosides in biological samples and dairy products.

New insights on the thermal analysis of low moisture composite foods.

Abstract Low moisture baked products were investigated with a view to characterising the effect of both formulation and humidity on their physical stability. At the end of the baking process, the samples were in the amorphous state as a result of starch gelatinization and sugar melting. Their thermal properties were analyzed with differential scanning calorimetry and their glass transitions were studied. The DSC thermograms were thoroughly studied through a Gaussian deconvolution of the first derivative of their heat flow. Inducing mixing of water-in water BSA/dextran emulsion by a strong polyelectrolyte

Abstract We examine whether a small amount of strong polyelectrolyte (dextran sulfate sodium salt/DSS/) can induce mixing in water-in-water bovine serum albumin/dextran (BSA/DEX) emulsion and how intermacromolecular interactions affect its the rheological properties. Addition of DSS to water-in-water emulsion at pH 5.4 leads to its mixing at the DSS/BSA weight ratio, ( q ( DSS / BSA ) ) ≥ 0.07 , a noticeable increase in viscosity and storage modulus (G′). Mixing is reversible: increasing the ionic strength leads to phase separation in the water/BSA/DEX/DSS system. Non-equilibrium capillary electrophoresis of equilibrium mixtures (NECEEM) has been used to characterize polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Commercial PVA samples with different molecular masses, from M(w)=15 up to 205 kDa, were used. According to the (13)C NMR spectra, the samples also differed in tacticity (stereoregularity). Mixtures of PVA and the anionic azo-dye Congo Red (CR) were injected in the presence of a borate buffer. Removal of trivalent chromium from tannery waste waters using bone charcoal

International audience; The ability of bone charcoal to remove Cr(III) from aqueous solutions by adsorption has been investigated. The adsorbent used was first characterised and then the adsorption was studied as a function of time and amount of charcoal. Tests were carried out with synthetic solutions whose Cr concentrations (500 mg L-1) were similar to those found in some effluents of Moroccan tannery industries. Cr removal efficiencies higher than 90% were obtained at pH 3.5 using 3 g of bone charcoal and a stirring time of about 30 min. Impact of Hypoxia-Related Tumor Acidosis on Cytotoxicity of Different Chemotherapeutic Drugs In Vitro and In Vivo

Extracellular acidosis in tumors leads to an activation of the p-glycoprotein (Pgp) drug transporter. In the present study the cytotoxicity of different chemotherapeutic drugs and its dependence on the Pgp activity during acidosis were analyzed in vitro and in vivo. Treating R3327-AT1, Pgp-positive tumor cells at pH 7.4 with daunorubicin, cisplatin or docetaxel led to marked apoptosis induction and cell death. Under acidic (pH 6.6) conditions cytotoxicity of daunorubicin or docetaxel was significantly reduced whereas cisplatin-induced cell death was almost pH-independent.
