Multi-wave, multi-variable models of job insecurity: applying different scales in studying the stability of job insecurity
2001
The study had two specific targets: first, to examine the stability of job insecurity by utilizing three-year longitudinal data (n = 109) collected in Finland and, second, to clarify psychometric properties of four job insecurity scales, i.e., the global scale, the importance scale, the probability scale and the powerlessness scale. The study was carried out by means of questionnaires, which were answered on three occasions. Analyses were conducted using multi-wave, multi-variable models which were estimated and tested via the LISREL program. Generally, the results showed that job insecurity remained relatively stable during the follow-up period, although there were some variations in the s…
Inanspruchnahme von Selbsthilfegruppen und Psychotherapie im Anschluss an eine stationäre psychosomatisch-psychotherapeutische Behandlung
2007
Until now little is known about the role of participation in self-help groups alone or combined with psychotherapy in post-in-patient care. In the present study 2933 patients were questioned about their experience of self-help groups and psychotherapy after discharge from a clinic for psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy. Nearly 8 % of them utilized self-help groups (mostly combined with out-patient psychotherapy), and altogether 68 % out-patient psychotherapy following in-patient treatment. Patients without out-patient treatment were psychologically less burdened and had better resources than participants of self-help groups or psychotherapy. Self-help group members differed from patie…
Efficacy of Guanfacine Extended Release in Children and Adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Comorbid Oppositional Defiant D…
2020
OBJECTIVE To assess the efficacy of the non-stimulant guanfacine extended release (GXR) on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in children and adolescents, with and without comorbid oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). METHODS Data were derived from 4 phase 3, randomized, placebo-controlled trials of dose-optimized GXR monotherapy, in which at least 10% of participants had a diagnosis of comorbid ODD. SPD503-312 and SPD503-316 were 10- to 13-week studies of GXR (1-7 mg/d). SPD503-314 and SPD503-307 were 8-week studies of GXR (1-4 mg/d). Efficacy was assessed using the ADHD Rating Scale IV (ADHD-RS-IV) total scores. RESULTS In total, 1,084 participants were included (SPD…
Effectiveness and safety of dexamphetamine sulfate (Attentin
2021
Abstract Background: Randomized controlled trials have shown that dexamphetamine sulfate (DEX) is efficacious in the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents; however, data on the effectiveness and safety of DEX in routine practice are scarce. Objective: This study investigated the long-term effectiveness and safety of Attentin® (immediate-release DEX) in children and adolescents with ADHD in routine practice. Methods: ATTENTION was a multicenter, prospective, observational, non-interventional study that enrolled pediatric patients with ADHD (aged 6-17 years) with a clinically inadequate response to previous methylphenidate (MPH) treatment. Pa…
Machine-learned selection of psychological questionnaire items relevant to the development of persistent pain after breast cancer surgery
2018
Background: Prevention of persistent pain after breast cancer surgery, via early identification of patients at high risk, is a clinical need. Psychological factors are among the most consistently proposed predictive parameters for the development of persistent pain. However, repeated use of long psychological questionnaires in this context may be exhaustive for a patient and inconvenient in everyday clinical practice. Methods: Supervised machine learning was used to create a short form of questionnaires that would provide the same predictive performance of pain persistence as the full questionnaires in a cohort of 1000 women followed up for 3 yr after breast cancer surgery. Machine-learned …
Comparison of Paroxetine and Maprotiline in Minor Depression
1994
Whilst the efficacy of paroxetine has been demonstrated in MDD, its clinical utility in minor depression has not been established. This study assesses the antidepressant efficacy of paroxetine in patients meeting RDC criteria for minor depression. All patients scored 13 points on the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) at baseline. After a 3 day washout period, patients were randomised to receive paroxetine 20–40mg/day or maprotiline 100-150mg/day, dose being titrated according to clinical response after 3 weeks treatment at the lower doses. Assessments conducted at baseline (day 0) and at weekly intervals for 6 weeks included the 17-item HAMD, the Montgomery-Asberg Depression R…
Measures of the efficacy of psychotropic drugs in acute treatment: the current status of their validity

An association between plasma ferritin concentrations measured 48 h after delivery and postpartum depression.
2010
Abstract Context Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional problem experienced by childbearing women, and postpartum depression (PPD) is the most common psychiatric disorder seen during the first year after delivery. The possible link between iron deficiency and PPD is not clear. Objective To evaluate whether iron status 48 h after delivery was associated with PPD. Our hypothesis was that iron deficiency would be associated with PPD. Design This was a prospective cohort study of depression-free women studied in the postpartum period. Setting Women who give birth at obstetric units in several general hospitals in Spain. Participants A subsample of 729 women was included in the present s…
Research Letter: is neuroticism a risk factor for postpartum depression?
2012
Although the relationship between personality and depressive illness is complex (Shea, 2005), there is empirical evidence that some personality features such as neuroticism, harm avoidance, introversion, dependency, self-criticism or perfectionism are related to depressive illness risk (Gunderson et al. 1999). Moreover, personality traits, especially neuroticism, may explain the increased prevalence of depression among females (Goodwin & Gotlib, 2004). Few studies have explored neuroticism, extraversion and psychoticism as risk factors for depression after an event as stressful as childbirth. Pitt (1968) was the first author to report high scores on neuroticism and low scores on extraversio…
