La rationalité simonienne : interprétations et enjeux épistémologiques
1999
Since economics focuses on individual behaviour and implicitly adopt a methodological individualism, an individual rationality hypothesis must be laid down. Beyond the usual substantive rationality hypothesis, others forms of individual rationality can be found in economics theory. They are often related to the Simon's bounded rationality hypothesis. In the economics literature the meanings of the bounded rationality hypothesis are obviously diverse and sometimes based on a partial or superficial readings of Simon's writings. Moreover, each one of these meanings is implicitly closely linked with a particular methodological and epistemological position. Based on careful readings of Simon's w…

2021
Cognitive and Affective Consequences of Information and Choice Overload
2021
When interviewed in 1992 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Nobel laureate Herbert Simon described a paradox at the heart of living in an economy that made every effort to design and produce ever more “choice alternatives” but that simultaneously allocated very little energy to encouraging people to devote the attention and time actually required to choose. He gave the example of a decision to buy a new house, commenting: “Before you even start the choice process, somebody has presented you with this, and this, and this house” (UBS, 1992). The overabundance of alternatives was lamented by Simon in 1992, when computing power was slower. It is all the more alarming in the modern and constantly …
Post-Secular Identity? Developing a New Approach to Religion in International Relations and IR Studies
2021
In spite of the increasing presence of religion in international relations with various publications observing this presence and numerous authorities calling for the inclusion of religion into mainstream research, there is no universal consent to recognize religion’s role in IR. In our opinion, the only way to reconcile IR with the international reality in which religion has been and will remain present in the foreseeable future is for the researchers themselves to construct—especially those oriented towards broad, non-Western perspective—a new face of the discipline, the face which in this article we call the post-secular identity of IR study. Assuming that identity is first and foremost a…
Jason Intentional Learning: An Operational Semantics
2013
This paper introduces an operational semantics for defining Intentional Learning on Jason, the well known Java-based implementation of AgentSpeak(L). This semantics enables Jason to define agents capable of learning the reasons for adopting intentions based on their own experience. In this work, the use of the term Intentional Learning is strictly circumscribed to the practical rationality theory where plans are predefined and the target of the learning processes is to learn the reasons to adopt them as intentions. Top-Down Induction of Logical Decision Trees (TILDE) has proved to be a suitable mechanism for supporting learning on Jason: the first-order representation of TILDE is adequate t…
A Multiagent Framework to Animate Socially Intelligent Agents
2007
This paper presents a multiagent framework designed to animate groups of synthetic humans that properly balance task oriented and social behaviors. The work presented in this paper focuses on the BDI agents and the social model integrated to provide socially acceptable decisions. The social model provides rationality, to control the global coordination of the group, and sociability, to simulate relations (e.g. friends) and reciprocity between members. The multiagent based framework has been tested successfully in dynamic environments while simulating a virtual university bar, where several types of agents (groups of waiters and customers) can interact and finally display complex social beha…
School, boredoom and rebelliouseness
2002
This article intends to put light on some of the rationalization mechanisms of the boring and of the scholar disobedience presents at the modern psicopedagogical rationality. We carry on with this task spacing us out from a double position: the one that pathologies what challenge someone or defer from the established identities, and the one that turns violence into a simple phenomena of technical management and of production of expert wisdom. In order to rethink both scholar policy and psicopedagogical practices we will go deep on two phenomena by treating them as problematics. One of them is the 'institutional experience of going to the school'. The second one is inseparable from the above…
