Food web reconstruction gives evidence of increased trophic levels in no-trawl areas: the red mullet, Mullus barbatus L. case in northern Sicily

This study was aimed at identifying the food web of the red mullet, Mullus barbatus in order to understand how it is affected by trawling disturbance. To achieve this objective: a) the main features of the red mullet habitat were investigated; b) the food web of this habitat was studied in two no-trawl areas and in two areas open to trawling. The working hypothesis is that trawling affects the biochemistry of the sediment and the trophic structure of the benthic assemblage. La ricerca dell’Unità di Palermo, di cui è responsabile il Prof. Andrea Sciascia, si è interessata a quel territorio, ad ovest di Palermo, incluso fra Isola delle Femmine e Partinico. In questo ambito esercitano una speciale azione attrattiva e contrapposta Palermo e l’aeroporto Falcone e Borsellino. L’effetto di tale azione si registra su quelle aree “verdi”, agricole o residuali, che costituiscono spesso i margini fra i nuclei densi inclusi nel territorio di studio (Isola delle Femmine, Capaci, Carini, Cinisi, Terrasini e Partinico). The city which sprawls through a territory no longer has spacial boundaries; consequently the urban system leads to a noticeable and unavoidable increase in the need for mobility. This mobility has a “fondamental” role in urban sustainablity (these themes are present in many studies). This paper questions the basis of the power of States to regulate immigration on their territory, by highlighting the contradictions, hypocrisies and omissions that mark both the institutional management of immigration and some theories, such as the one outlined in John Rawls' The Law of Peoples, that this management legitimize more or less directly. The perpetration of injustice on the international arena and the violations of law and rights that derive from it are therefore underlined, taking for example the hypocrisies connected with the application of international refugee law, also in light of the recent terrible evolutions to which the Ukrainian crisis has led.
