The Virtual Archaeology and Restoration Project emerged from the activities conducted since 1957 by the Italian Archaeological Mission in Hierapolis (MAIER). Its aim is the study of the transformations of the urban topography as part of a specific line of research called "Virtual Hierapolis". The contribution illustrated the state of the art of the research project of the years 2007-2010.

In particular, the main research projects are illustrated: the Papyrological Museum of Lecce and the Soknopaiou Nesos Project, Dime es-Seba / Egypt (2013-2017); Hierapolis of Phrygia - Turkey (2005-2015) Virtual Hierapolis Project; Virtual restoration of the medieval paintings of Salento: knowledge-fruition-valorization (2004-2017).

The Temple of Seppannibale originally known as the church of San Pietro lo Petraro is located in Fasano and is a quadrangular building with three internal naves, with two small domes arranged in axis. Inside there are remains of frescoes from the Benevento school showing scenes showing some figures (perhaps Prophets) and scenes from the book of the Apocalypse. The essay concerns the recent work carried out as part of a multidisciplinary research on some rocky churches in the southern Apulia, conducted in collaboration with the Chair of History of Medieval Art of the University of Salento and of the University of Bari. ABSTRACTIn this work, the decision-making process involved in the restoration of the eighteenth century paliotto ligneo (wooden altar frontal) della chiesa del Santissimo Crocifisso all’Albergheria of Palermo is presented. Earlier research concerning mirror restoration was based on only a few case studies and the proposed techniques were not suitable for the artwork here. As a consequence, it was necessary to re-examine theories and protocols of modern restoration to plan an appropriate intervention of the altar frontal.
