Azo-hydrazo conversion via [1,5]-hydrogen shifts. A combined experimental and theoretical study

2012

Abstract Azoalkenes 6e , 6g , 6h , and 8c underwent an easy azo-hydrazo conversion via a [1,5]-hydrogen shift yielding α,β-unsaturated hydrazones. The isomerization products were characterized through spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques. In order to understand the nature of the mechanism of these [1,5]-hydrogen shifts, the transition state structures of the reactions were theoretically studied at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level. Substitution effects in the propenylazo system on the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were analyzed. An electron localization function (ELF) analysis of the electronic structure of the transition state structure associated with the azo-hydrazo conversion of t…

A SUBCRITICAL BIFURCATION FOR A NONLINEAR REACTION–DIFFUSION SYSTEM

2010

In this paper the mechanism of pattern formation for a reaction-diffusion system with nonlinear diffusion terms is investigated. Through a linear stability analysis we show that the cross-diffusion term allows the pattern formation. To predict the form and the amplitude of the pattern we perform a weakly nonlinear analysis. In the supercritical case the Stuart-Landau equation is found, which rules the evolution of the amplitude of the most unstable mode. With the increasing distance from the bifurcation value of the cross-diffusion parameter, the weakly nonlinear analysis fails and a Fourier–Galerkin approach is adopted. In the subcritical case the weakly nonlinear analysis must be pushed u…

Sequential effects in the lexical decision task: the role of the item frequency of the previous trial.

2003

Two lexical decision experiments were conducted to determine whether there is a specific, localized influence of the item frequency of consecutive trials (i.e., first-order sequential effects) when the trials are not related to each other. Both low-frequency words and nonwords were influenced by the frequency of the precursor word (Experiment 1). In contrast, high-frequency words showed little sensitivity to the frequency of the precursor word (Experiment 2), although they showed longer reaction times for word trials preceded by a nonword trial. The presence of sequential effects in the lexical decision task suggests that participants shift their response criteria on a trial-by-trial basis.

The frequency effect for pseudowords in the lexical decision task

2005

Four experiments were designed to investigate whether the frequency of words used to create pseudowords plays an important role in lexical decision. Computational models of the lexical decision task (e.g., the dual route cascaded model and the multiple read-out model) predict that latencies to low-frequency pseudowords should be faster than latencies to high-frequency pseudowords. Consistent with this prediction, results showed that when the pseudowords were created by replacing one internal letter of the base word (Experiments 1 and 3), high-frequency pseudowords yielded slower latencies than low-frequency pseudowords. However, this effect occurred only in the leading edge of the response …

Noninvasive monitoring of polymer curing reactions by dielectrometry

2011

A microwave sensor system for the noninvasive monitoring of the curing process of a thermoset material placed inside a metallic mold is described. The microwave sensor is designed as an open-ended coaxial resonator with a curved surface adapted to the mold inner shape. The analysis of the microwave resonator comprises a recently developed method for deembedding the effect of coupling network in overcoupled resonators, so the range of permitted measurements encompass both low and high dielectric losses of polymeric materials. Results show that noninvasive, continuous monitoring of the microwave dielectric properties of the thermoset material can be performed in real time, allowing one to che…

Iron-Catalyzed Cross-Coupling Reactions of Alkyl Grignards with Aryl Chlorobenzenesulfonates

2021

Aryl sulfonate esters are versatile synthetic intermediates in organic chemistry as well as attractive architectures due to their bioactive properties. Herein, we report the synthesis of alkyl-substituted benzenesulfonate esters by iron-catalyzed C(sp2)–C(sp3) cross-coupling of Grignard reagents with aryl chlorides. The method operates using an environmentally benign and sustainable iron catalytic system, employing benign urea ligands. A broad range of chlorobenzenesulfonates as well as challenging alkyl organometallics containing β-hydrogens are compatible with these conditions, affording alkylated products in high to excellent yields. The study reveals that aryl sulfonate esters are the m…

Behavioural studies on rats injected with l-cycloserine and other compounds

1964

l-cycloserine, a cyclic derivative of O-substituted hydroxylamine, causes the suppression of the conditioned avoidance reaction in the rat. The subsequent injection of equimolar amounts of pyridoxine hydrochloride is responsible for a complete reversal of this suppression. The suppression of the conditioned response is not observed with the d-isomer of cycloserine. Isoniazid is a strong antagonist of l-cycoserine. Changes in the brain level of GABA under several conditions are described. These changes suggest though do not establish a relationship between the block of the conditioned response and the elevation of the aminoacid above its physiological concentration.

Determination of Aldicarb, Aldicarb Sulfoxide, and Aldicarb Sulfone in Oranges by Simple Gas–Liquid Chromatography with Nitrogen–Phosphorus Detection

1994

Abstract A reversed-phase liquid chromatographic method, using an acetonitrile–water gradient mobile phase, and a gas-liquid chromatographic method with nitrogen–phosphorus and flame photometric detection were compared for simultaneous and separate determinations of trace quantities of aldicarb and its metabolites aldicarb sulfone and aldicarb sulfoxide. One hundred gram samples of fortified oranges were extracted with water–acetone, water-acetonitrile, or water–methanol, and the extracts were partitioned with methylene chloride. Partitioning with other organic solvents such as chloroform, ethyl acetate, or methyl isobutyl ketone was also investigated. When performed under optimal condition…

Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Combretastatin A-4 and Three Combretastatin-Based Hybrids

2012

The syntheses of combretastatin A-4 from gallic acid and of three combretastatin-based hybrids are described. Starting from commercial gallic acid, the phosphonium salt (3,4,5-trimethoxybenzylphosphonium bromide) is synthesized and coupled, through a Wittig reaction, with several aldehydes, including methoxymethyl-protected isovanillin, the aldehyde γ-bicyclohomofarnesal having a labdane skeleton, 3-(3-pyridyl) propanal, and furfural. The biological properties of the cis-coupled compounds as cytotoxic, antiviral and antifungal agents are also reported. In addition, pyrogallol, gallic and 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoic acids have been studied biologically.

Preparation and Structure of Diexo-Oxanorbornane-fused 1,3-Heterocycles

2004

Via the reaction of diexo-oxanorbornanedicarboxylic anhydride with toluene, the diexo-aroylcarboxylic acid (3a) was prepared, which exists partly as the tautomeric lactol (3b). With bifunctional reagents, 3a yields fused heterocycles containing three-six rings. Thus, alkylenediamines result in imidazole- and 1,3-diazepine-fused oxygen- bridged isoindolones (6a,b), alkanolamines form the oxazole- and 1,3-oxazine-fused oxanorbornene derivatives (7a-c), and o-phenylenediamine undergoes cyclization to furnish the condensed benzimidazole (8). The reaction of 3a with diexo- aminonorbornanecarbohydrazide yields a pyrimidopyridazine containing six condensed rings (9). In a similar reaction with die…
