The 3-O-methylated estrogen derivatives 1a-d and α-estradiol (1e) underwent sulfuric acid-catalysed transformations to furnish the steroids 2–6. The processes involved in the reaction sequence are regioselective sulfonation and, above all, the Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement of the methyl group at C-13. The effect of pH and nitrite concentration on the activity of the nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) in an activated sludge reactor has been determined by means of laboratory batch experiments based on respirometric techniques. The bacterial activity was measured at different pH and at different total nitrite concentrations (TNO 2). The experimental results showed that the nitrite oxidation rate (NOR) depends on the TNO 2 concentration independently of the free nitrous acid (FNA) concentration, so FNA cannot be considered as the real substrate for NOB. In this work we investigate the phenomena of pattern formation and wave propagation for a reaction–diffusion system with nonlinear diffusion. We show how cross-diffusion destabilizes uniform equilibrium and is responsible for the initiation of spatial patterns. Near marginal stability, through a weakly nonlinear analysis, we are able to predict the shape and the amplitude of the pattern. For the amplitude, in the supercritical and in the subcritical case, we derive the cubic and the quintic Stuart–Landau equation respectively. Propagation failure in discrete bistable reaction-diffusion systems: Theory and experiments

International audience; Wave front propagation failure is investigated in discrete bistable reaction-diffusion systems. We present a theoretical approach including dissipative effects and leading to an analytical expression of the critical coupling beyond which front propagation can occur as a function of the nonlinearity threshold parameter. Our theoretical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations and experimental results on an equivalent electrical diffusive lattice.

The transition from planar fronts, trigger waves or solitary pulses to spirals in excitable media, has attracted increasing interest in the past few decades, mainly because of its relevance for biological and medical applications. In this paper we describe a new and convenient method for spiral generation starting from symmetric wavefronts. By using the micelle-forming zwitterionic surfactant N-tetradecyl- N,N-dimethylamine oxide in a Belousov–Zhabotinsky solution, it is possible to control to a large extent the domains where spirals can be spontaneously generated. Weakly nonlinear analysis of Turing patterns in a morphochemical model for metal growth

We focus on the morphochemical reaction–diffusion model introduced in Bozzini et al. (2013) and carry out a nonlinear bifurcation analysis with the aim to characterize the shape and the amplitude of the patterns arising as the result of Turing instability of the physically relevant equilibrium. We perform a weakly nonlinear multiple scales analysis, and derive the normal form equations governing the amplitude of the patterns. These amplitude equations allow us to construct relevant solutions of the model equations and reveal the presence of multiple branches of stable solutions arising as the result of subcritical bifurcations. Only one of the four P atoms of P4 reacts with rhodium and iridium trihydrides [(triphos)MH3 ] to provide phosphane [Eq. (a)]. The resulting cyclo-P3 fragment is efficiently scavenged by the metal fragment to give the complexes [(triphos)M(η3 -P3 )]. A mechanism accounting for the hydrogenation reaction is proposed in which the complexes [(triphos)MH(η1 :η1 -P4 )] and [(triphos)M(η1 :η2 -HP4 ] are intermediates. The latter complex contains the unprecedented hydridotetraphosphane ligand HP4- .

The use of selected plant water extracts to control pests and weeds is gaining growing attention in organic and sustainable agriculture, but the effects that such extracts may exert on the quality aspects of durum wheat are still unexplored.
