Metalloprotease meprin beta generates nontoxic N-terminal amyloid precursor protein fragments in vivo.

Identification of physiologically relevant substrates is still the most challenging part in protease research for understanding the biological activity of these enzymes. The zinc-dependent metalloprotease meprin β is known to be expressed in many tissues with functions in health and disease. Here, we demonstrate unique interactions between meprin β and the amyloid precursor protein (APP). Novel Combination of Sorafenib and Celecoxib Provides Synergistic Anti-Proliferative and Pro-Apoptotic Effects in Human Liver Cancer Cells

Molecular targeted therapy has shown promise as a treatment for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Sorafenib, a multikinase inhibitor, recently received FDA approval for the treatment of advanced HCC. However, although sorafenib is well tolerated, concern for its safety has been expressed. Celecoxib (Celebrex®) is a selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor which exhibits antitumor effects in human HCC cells. Optimized culture conditions for tissue explants of uterine leiomyoma

Background Uterine leiomyomas are the most common benign tumours in women, which arise from smooth muscle cells of the uterine myometrium and usually are multicentric. In spite of their frequency pathogenesis is widely unknown, mainly due to the absence of a suitable model system. We describe the systematic optimization of culturing leiomyoma tissue explants in an economical and effective ex vivo system. Gas-phase ion chemistry of protonated melatonin

The gas-phase ion chemistry of protonated melatonin has been investigated by mass spectrometric (MS) techniques involving chemical ionisation, fast atom bombardment and electrospray ionisation. Either naturally- occurring or collision-induced decomposition e-D derivatives obtained by exchange with D(2)O. The analysis of experimental results allows definite pathways for the formation of the ion at m/z 174 to be assigned and sheds some more light on the overall fragmentation pathways. Cross-Linked Thiazolidine Network as Support for Palladium: A New Catalyst for Suzuki and Heck Reactions

A thiazolidine-based material was used for the first time as support for palladium. The support was prepared by starting from a highly cross-linked thiazolium-based material, obtained by radical oligomerization of a bisvinylthiazolium dibromide salt in the presence of 3-mercaptopropyl-modified silica SBA-15. Palladium was immobilized by treatment with tetrachloropalladate salt. Reduction with sodium borohydride afforded a thiazolidine-based material that acted as ligands for the Pd species. Green conditions for the Suzuki reaction using microwave irradiation and a new HNT- supported ionic liquid-like phase (HNT-SILLP) catalyst

A new catalytic system based on modified halloysite nanotubes was employed in the Suzuki reaction under microwave irradi- ation. A set of solvents, times and bases was screened and the best experimental conditions were obtained when the reactions were carried out for 10 min in water–ethanol at 120 °C in presence of K2CO3 as base. Good recyclability was observed. The new catalytic system was employed using either 1 mol% or 0.1 mol%. The palladium catalyst displayed good activity, allowing the synthesis of several biphenyl compounds in high yield working with only 0.1 mol% palladium loading. Revisiting the disappearance of terrestrial dissolved organic matter in the ocean: A δ13C study

Abstract. Organic carbon (OC) depleted in 13 C is a widely used tracer for terrestrial organic matter (OM) in aquatic sys- tems. Photochemical reactions can, however, change δ 13 C of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) when chromophoric, aromatic-rich terrestrial OC is selectively mineralized. We assessed the robustness of the δ 13 C signature of DOC ( δ 13 C DOC ) as a tracer for terrestrial OM by estimating its change during the photobleaching of chromophoric DOM (CDOM) from 10 large rivers.
