Local aromaticity in polyacenes manifested by individual proton and carbon shieldings: DFT mapping of aromaticity

2019

Exponential dependencies between locally calculated geometric and magnetic indexes of aromaticity, harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA) and nucleus independent chemical shifts (NICS)(0), NICS(1) and NICS(1)zz, and the number of conjugated benzene rings in linear acenes, from benzene to decacene were observed at B3LYP/6-311+G** level of theory. Correlations between HOMA and NICS indexes showed exponential dependencies and were fitted with simple three-parameter function. Similar correlations between both indexes of aromaticity and proton and carbon nuclear isotropic shieldings of individual acene rings were observed. Contrary to proton data, the predicted 13 C nuclear isotropic sh…

Charge transfer effects on the chemical reactivity of PdxCu1−xnanoalloys

2015

This work reports on the synthesis and characterization of PdxCu1-x (x = 0.7, 0.5 and 0.3) nanoalloys obtained via an eco-friendly chemical reduction method based on ascorbic acid and trisodium citrate. The average size of the quasi-spherical nanoparticles (NPs) obtained by this method was about 4 nm, as observed by TEM. The colloids containing different NPs were then supported on carbon in order to produce powder samples (PdxCu1-x/C) whose electronic and structural properties were probed by different techniques. XRD analysis indicated the formation of crystalline PdCu alloys with a nanoscaled crystallite size. Core-level XPS results provided a fingerprint of a charge transfer process betwe…

Orthogonal functionalisation of upconverting NaYF4 nanocrystals.

2013

A simple and straightforward method for the orthogonal functionalisation of upconverting NaYF4 nanocrystals (UCNCs)-doped withYb(3+) and Er(3+)-based on N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N'-ethylcarbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) selective reactions between two dyes and two different reactive groups present at the periphery of the upconverting nanocrystals is reported. Organic-soluble UCNCs of 10 and 50 nm in size are encapsulated efficiently in a 1:1 mixture of two commercial 3000 Da poly(ethylene glycol) derivatives with two different reactive groups (amino and carboxylic groups). The water-dispersible UCNCs are non-cytotoxic, stable in the physiological environment, and present free ami…

Pd@Fe2O3 Superparticles with Enhanced Peroxidase Activity by Solution Phase Epitaxial Growth

2017

Compared to conventional deposition techniques for the epitaxial growth of metal oxide structures on a bulk metal substrate, wet-chemical synthesis based on a dispersible template offers advantages such as low cost, high throughput, and the capability to prepare metal/metal oxide nanostructures with controllable size and morphology. However, the synthesis of such organized multicomponent architectures is difficult because the size and morphology of the components are dictated by the interplay of interfacial strain and facet-specific reactivity. Here we show that solution-processable two-dimensional Pd nanotetrahedra and nanoplates can be used to direct the epitaxial growth of γ-Fe2O3 nanoro…

Carbon-doped titania as a precursor for titanate nanotubes

2018

Carbon-doped titania was fabricated via carbothermal treatment in nitrogen–acetylene gas flow and further used as a precursor for multiwalled titanate nanotube (TNT) synthesis via alkaline hydrothermal route. Investigation of the reaction products after hydrothermal treatment of carbon-doped titania using Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method shows the successful formation of TNTs. The presence of carbon was proved although the type of incorporation could not be certified. All samples show approximately the same carbon content before and after hydrothermal treatment. An increasing pretreatment temperature of titania precursor powders yields m…

Increased airway inflammatory cells in endurance athletes: what do they mean?

2003

Inflammatory cells are increased in the airways of endurance athletes, but their role in causing exercise-induced respiratory symptoms and bronchoconstriction, or their possible long-term consequences, are uncertain. To put the results of athlete studies in perspective, by analysing the pathogenesis of airway cell changes and their impact on respiratory function.Athletes of different endurance sports at rest showed increased airway neutrophils. Elite swimmers and skiers also showed large increases in airway eosinophils and lymphocytes, possibly related to chronic, exercise-related exposure to irritants or cold and dry air, respectively. Post-exercise studies reported variable responses of ai…

Microstructure development during NiAl intermetallic synthesis in reactive Ni–Al nanolayers: Numerical investigations vs. TEM observations

2013

Abstract Heterogeneous reactions leading to the formation of intermetallic compounds in nanometric Ni–Al multilayer system are examined both numerically and experimentally. On the numerical side, the reactivity of a layered Ni–Al–Ni system is studied by means of molecular dynamics simulations, using an embedded-atom method (EAM) potential. The mechanism of nucleation and growth of the intermetallic phase is determined. Four main stages in the reactive process, which lead to the formation of rounded shape grains of intermetallic phase at the Ni–Al interface, are delineated. On the experimental side, TEM imaging of quenched samples revealed the behavior of the Ni–Al reactive foils and showed …

Heterocycles from α-aminonitriles.

2014

Owing to their various modes of reactivity, α-aminonitriles represent versatile building blocks for the construction of a wide range of nitrogen heterocycles. The present Concept article focuses on synthetic methodologies using their bifunctional nature which is the basis of their reactivity as α-amino carbanions and as iminium ions. Reactions exclusively taking place on either the amine or on the nitrile moiety will not be considered.

The Participation of 3,3,3-Trichloro-1-nitroprop-1-ene in the [3 + 2] Cycloaddition Reaction with Selected Nitrile N-Oxides in the Light of the Exper…

2021

The regioselective zw-type [3 + 2] cycloaddition (32CA) reactions of a series of aryl-substituted nitrile N-oxides (NOs) with trichloronitropropene (TNP) have been both experimentally and theoretically studied within the Molecular Electron Density Theory (MEDT). Zwitterionic NOs behave as moderate nucleophiles while TNP acts as a very strong electrophile in these polar 32CA reactions of forward electron density flux, which present moderate activation Gibbs free energies of 22.8–25.6 kcal·mol−1 and an exergonic character of 28.4 kcal·mol−1 that makes them irreversible and kinetically controlled. The most favorable reaction is that involving the most nucleophilic MeO-substituted NO. Despite P…
