Toward fast and accurate emergency cases detection in BSNs

2020

International audience; In body sensor networks (BSNs), medical sensors capture physiological data from the human body and send them to the coordinator who act as a gateway to health care. The main aim of BSNs is to save peoples' lives. Therefore, fast and correct detection of emergencies while maintaining low-energy consumption of sensors is essential requirement of BSNs. In this study, the authors propose a new adaptive data sampling approach, where the sampling ratio is adapted based on the sensed data variation. The idea is to use the modified version of the cumulative sum (CUSUM) algorithm (modified CUSUM) that they previously proposed for wireless sensor networks to monitor the data v…

An Optimized Roadside Units (RSU) Placement for Delay-Sensitive Applications in Vehicular Networks

2015

International audience; Over the last few years, a lot of applications have been developed for Vehicular Ad Hoc NETworks (VANETs) to exchange information between vehicles. However, VANET is basically a Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) characterized by intermittent connectivity, long delays and message losses especially in low density regions [1]. Thus, VANET requires the use of an infrastructure such as Roadside Units (RSUs) that permits to enhance the network connectivity. Nevertheless, due to their deployment cost, RSUs need to be optimally deployed. Hence, the main objective of this work is to provide an optimized RSUs placement for delay-sensitive applications in vehicular networks that imp…

Validating quantitative PCR assays for cell-free DNA detection without DNA extraction: Exercise induced kinetics in systemic lupus erythematosus pati…

2021

ABSTRACTCirculating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has been investigated as a screening tool for many diseases. To avoid expensive and time-consuming DNA isolation, direct quantification PCR assays can be established. However, rigorous validation is required to provide reliable data in the clinical and non-clinical context. Considering International Organization for Standardization, as well as bioanalytical method validation guidelines we provide a comprehensive procedure to validate assays for cfDNA quantification from unpurified blood plasma. A 90 and 222 bp assay was validated to study the kinetics of cfDNA after exercise in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. The assays showed ultra-low …

Ultrasonic Guided Waves-Based Monitoring of Rail Head: Laboratory and Field Tests

2010

Recent train accidents have reaffirmed the need for developing a rail defect detection system more effective than that currently used. One of the most promising techniques in rail inspection is the use of ultrasonic guided waves and noncontact probes. A rail inspection prototype based on these concepts and devoted to the automatic damage detection of defects in rail head is the focus of this paper. The prototype includes an algorithm based on wavelet transform and outlier analysis. The discrete wavelet transform is utilized to denoise ultrasonic signals and to generate a set of relevant damage sensitive data. These data are combined into a damage index vector fed to an unsupervised learning…

Real-Time Implementation of Signal Processing Techniques for Disturbances Detection

2019

The real-time analysis of power quality (PQ) disturbances and islanding detection for distributed generation (DG) system using signal processing algorithms are still at a premature stage. Quick and reliable detection of islanding and PQ disturbances needs renewed focus. This paper is concentrated on the implementation of advanced signal processing techniques in field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to identify PQ and islanding events in real time. The proposed scheme is based on orthogonal empirical mode decomposition (OEMD) implemented in FPGA. This technique does not suffer from the loss of signal characteristics with successive decomposition levels. The performance of said technique is de…

Use of Supercomputing towards the Generation of a Process Execution Plan in Distributed Real-Time Systems

2010

This work consider the scheduling of periodic tasks or processes with real-time constraints in a distributed environment. Each task must be executed meeting deadlines, precedence relationships and resources constraints. The problem of scheduling tasks on a distributed environment can be viewed as a problem of assigning processes to the processors but keeping the schedulability in local environments. Thus, the problem can be divided in two phases: the first phase is assigning processes to processors and the second is to schedule assigned processes in each processor in the distributed environment. This paper focuses in the first phase. It introduces a heuristic mechanism for assigning process…

Memory Resource Management for Real-Time Systems

2007

Dynamic memory storage has been widely used for years in computer science. However, its use in real-time systems has not been considered as an important issue, and memory management has not receive much consideration, whereas today's real-time applications are often characterized by highly fluctuating memory requirements. In this paper we present an approach to dynamic memory management for real-time systems. In response to application behavior and requests, the underlying memory management system adjusts resources to meet changing demands and user needs. The architectural framework that realizes this approach allows adaptive allocation of memory resources to applications involving both per…

A review of health assessment techniques for distribution transformers in smart distribution grids

2020

Due to the large number of distribution transformers in the distribution grid, the status of distribution transformers plays an important role in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the these grids. To evaluate the distribution transformer health, many assessment techniques have been studied and developed. These tools will support the transformer operators in predicting the status of the distribution transformer and responding effectively. This paper will review the literature in the area, analyze the latest techniques as well as highlight the advantages and disadvantages of current methodologies.

An empirically grounded agent based model for modeling directs, conflict detection and resolution operations in air traffic management

2017

We present an agent based model of the Air Traffic Management socio-technical complex system that aims at modeling the interactions between aircrafts and air traffic controllers at a tactical level. The core of the model is given by the conflict detection and resolution module and by the directs module. Directs are flight shortcuts that are given by air controllers to speed up the passage of an aircraft within a certain airspace and therefore to facilitate airline operations. Conflicts resolution between flight trajectories can arise during the en-route phase of each flight due to both not detailed flight trajectory planning or unforeseen events that perturb the planned flight plan. Our mod…

A real-time non-intrusive FPGA-based drowsiness detection system

2011

Automotive has gained several benefits from the Ambient Intelligent researches involving the deployment of sensors and hardware devices into an intelligent environment surrounding people, meeting users’ requirements and anticipating their needs. One of the main topics in automotive is to anticipate driver needs and safety, in terms of preventing critical and dangerous events. Considering the high number of caused accidents, one of the most relevant dangerous events affecting driver and passengers safety is driver’s drowsiness and hypovigilance. This paper presents a low-intrusive, real-time driver’s drowsiness detection system for common vehicles. The proposed system exploits the ‘‘bright p…
