Biotic homogenization of forest bird communities under human influence

Human actions impact biodiversity worldwide. Specialist species are particularly sensitive to environmental degradation whereas generalists may even benefit from habitat changes. As a consequence, specialists are declining while generalists are increasing and, therefore, communities become more similar. This phenomenon is known as biotic homogenization. In boreal forests logging and forest management is the most important factor changing the native habitat. In this thesis I studied if human actions are homogenizing boreal forest bird communities. This article discusses the results of a reception study of three environmental films with a focus on emotional reactions and the films’ influence on the respondents’ environmental awareness. The short experimental film Valtakunnat/Realms (Finland, 2018) envisions post-human life, and the potential destruction that the planet is being driven towards. To Teach a Bird to Fly (Finland, 2020), a short documentary fiction film about a woman raising critically endangered birds, imagines a future where the effects of climate change have been reversed. The role of littoral habitats in lake metabolism has been underrated, especially in humic lakes, based on an assumption of low benthic primary production (PP) due to low light penetration into water. This assumption has been challenged by recent recognition of littoral epiphyton dominance of whole-lake PP in a small highly humic lake and of epiphyton as an important basal food source for humic lake biota. This paper is a survey of some arithmetic applications of techniques in the geometry and ergodic theory of negatively curved Riemannian manifolds, focusing on the joint works of the authors. We describe Diophantine approximation results of real numbers by quadratic irrational ones, and we discuss various results on the equidistribution in \(\mathbb{R}\), \(\mathbb{C}\) and in the Heisenberg groups of arithmetically defined points. We explain how these results are consequences of equidistribution and counting properties of common perpendiculars between locally convex subsets in negatively curved orbifolds, proven using dynamical and ergodic properties of their geodesic flows. Los espesores han sido obtenidos tanto para cielos cubiertos como para cielos parcialmente nubosos con el Sol oculto por las nubes, a partir de medidas de irradiancia eritemática (UVER) e irradiancia solar total a nivel de suelo. Se presenta una experiencia de innovación docente fundamentada en la colaboración interdisciplinar entre los estudiantes y profesores de dos asignaturas de la titulación de Psicología de la Universitat de València: Estadística y Psicología Social del Trabajo. De acuerdo a la valoración de los propios estudiantes y de los profesores, esta experiencia ha tenido un efecto positivo en el aprendizaje de los contenidos de ambas asignaturas, a la vez que un importante papel motivador para los estudiantes, estimulándoles a valorar la estadística como una parte integral del proceso de investigación y como un elemento importante de su formación.
