Area minimizing projective planes on the projective space of dimension 3 with the Berger metric
2016
Abstract We show that, among the projective planes embedded into the real projective space R P 3 endowed with the Berger metric, those of least area are exactly the ones obtained by projection of the equatorial spheres of S 3 . This result generalizes a classical result for the projective spaces with the standard metric.
Fuzzy-logic-based approach for identifying objects of interest in the PRIDE framework
2008
On-road autonomous vehicle navigation requires real-time motion planning in the presence of static and moving objects. Based on sensed data of the environment and the current traffic situation, an autonomous vehicle has to plan a path by predicting the future location of objects of interest. In this context, an object of interest is a moving or stationary object in the environment that has a reasonable probability of intersecting the path of the autonomous vehicle within a predetermined time frame. This paper investigates the identification of objects of interest within the PRIDE (PRediction In Dynamic Environments) framework. PRIDE is a multi-resolutional, hierarchical framework that predi…
Probing dynamics of dense suspensions: three-dimensional cross-correlation technique
1997
We describe the realization of a novel three-dimensional (3D) cross-correlation scheme, which provides the possibility to measure dynamic structure factors of highly concentrated colloidal samples without contributions of multiply scattered light. The apparatus is easier to align and more compact than the two-colour cross-correlation apparatus, which is commercially available. This should make the 3D cross-correlation set-up more convenient for routine applications, for example in industrial laboratories. We describe the set-up and discuss some special features of the optical components.
Predictors of surgical outcomes of minimally invasive right colectomy: the MERCY study
2022
PURPOSE: The optimal approach for minimally invasive (MIS) right colectomy remains under debate. This study aimed to describe surgical trends in the treatment of nonmetastatic right colon cancer and to identify predictors of short-term surgical outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective multicenter cohort study of Minimally-invasivE surgery for oncologic Right ColectomY (MERCY) was conducted on patients who underwent laparoscopic or robotic right colectomy between 2014 and 2020. Classification tree approach was used to describe the extracorporeal (EA) or intracorporeal (IA) anastomosis choice. Mixed-model regressions were used to identify patient- and surgery-related factors predictive of postopera…
Architectural Representation: a Tool for Urban Regeneration : the Colour Plan of Egadi Islands
2018
The Egadi Islands, at the western end of Sicily, preserve a peculiar architectural and environmental heritage. The work of people – related to tuna fishing, stone extraction and agriculture – has created, over time, an exceptional landscape. The nature, colour and texture of the local stone have given shape to a traditional architecture that, today, risks to disappear and to be replaced by new anonymous buildings. Furthermore, the pressure of tourism threatens to damage this delicate balance established, over centuries, between people and environment. Therefore, the Local Administration decided to adopt a Colour Plan to manage the inevitable processes of territorial transformations. The Arc…
Quasianalytic Denjoy-Carleman classes and o-minimality
2003
We show that the expansion of the real field generated by the functions of a quasianalytic Denjoy-Carleman class is model complete and o-minimal, provided that the class satisfies certain closure conditions. Some of these structures do not admit analytic cell decomposition, and they show that there is no largest o-minimal expansion of the real field.
Differential equations over polynomially bounded o-minimal structures
2002
We investigate the asymptotic behavior at +∞ of non-oscillatory solutions to differential equations y' = G(t, y), t > a, where G: R 1+l → R l is definable in a polynomially bounded o-minimal structure. In particular, we show that the Pfaffian closure of a polynomially bounded o-minimal structure on the real field is levelled.
Polynomial Identities of Algebras of Small Dimension
2009
It is well known that given an associative algebra or a Lie algebra A, its codimension sequence c n (A) is either polynomially bounded or grows at least as fast as 2 n . In [2] we proved that for a finite dimensional (in general nonassociative) algebra A, dim A = d, the sequence c n (A) is also polynomially bounded or c n (A) ≥ a n asymptotically, for some real number a > 1 which might be less than 2. Nevertheless, for d = 2, we may take a = 2. Here we prove that for d = 3 the same conclusion holds. We also construct a five-dimensional algebra A with c n (A) < 2 n .
Random Walks on Weighted Graphs of Groups
2019
Let X be a locally finite simplicial tree without terminal vertices, and let X = ∣X∣1 be its geometric realisation. Let Γ be a nonelementary discrete subgroup of Aut(X).
A General Framework for the One Center Location Problem
1992
This paper deals with an optimization problem where the objective function F is defined on a real vector space X by F(x) = γ(w 1║x - a 1║1, ⋯, w n ║x - a n║ n ), a formula in which a 1, ⋯, a n are n given points in X, ║∙║1, ⋯, ║∙║ n n norms on X, w 1, ⋯, w n positive numbers and γ a monotone norm on ℝ n . A geometric description of the set of optimal solutions to the problem min F(x) is given, illustrated by some examples. When all norms ║∙║i are equal, and γ being successively the l 1 , l ∞ and l 2-norm, a particular study is made, which shows the peculiar role played by the l 1-norm.
