Algorithms for coherence checking and propagation of conditional probability bounds
2001
In this paper, we propose some algorithms for the checking of generalized coherence (g-coherence) and for the extension of imprecise conditional probability assessments. Our concept of g-coherence is a generalization of de Finetti’s coherence principle and is equivalent to the ”avoiding uniform loss” property for lower and upper probabilities (a la Walley). By our algorithms we can check the g-coherence of a given imprecise assessment and we can correct it in order to obtain the associated coherent assessment (in the sense of Walley and Williams). Exploiting some properties of the random gain we show how, in the linear systems involved in our algorithms, we can work with a reduced set of va…
Diagrams
2020
Diagrams are two-dimensional representations of a domain in which relations among elements like points, lines, open/bounded regions on a plane match relations among the elements of that domain. Diagrams are means of surrogate reasoning, namely of exploring the possibilities to reduce or eliminate the uncertainty imparted by a problem through operations on external aids. The study of diagrams addresses formal and cognitive issues.
GRANULAR-INFORMATION-BASED RISK ANALYSIS IN UNCERTAIN SITUATIONS
2006
In the real life almost all of the decisions that we have to make incorporate uncertainty about the future events. Assessment of the uncertainty and, thus, the risk that is inherent in these decisions models can be critical. It is even truer if we are talking about the possibility of negative impact on the environment. It is very important to assess all the environmental risks in a project if there is any hazard to the environment. In this paper the possibility of using granular information is considered. The main advantage of the granular information is that it can be used to assess risks in situations when information about future events is incomplete and imprecise. Moreover, we can use n…
Continuum: A spatiotemporal data model to represent and qualify filiation relationships
2013
International audience; This work introduces an ontology-based spatio-temporal data model to represent entities evolving in space and time. A dynamic phenomenon generates a complex relationship network between the entities involved in the process. At the abstract level, the relationships can be identity or topological filiations. The existence of an identity filiation depends on whether the object changes its identity or not. On the other hand, topological filiations are based exclusively on the spatial component, like in the case of growth, reduction, merging or splitting. When combining identity and topological filiations, six filiation relationships are obtained, forming a second abstrac…
The Relational Syllogistic Revisited
2013
The relational syllogistic is an extension of the language of Classical syllogisms in which predicates are allowed to feature transitive verbs with quantified objects. It is known that the relational syllogistic does not admit a finite set of syllogism-like rules whose associated (direct) derivation relation is sound and complete. We present a modest ex- tension of this language which does.

Relations between representational consistency, conceptual understanding of the force concept, and scientific reasoning
2012
Previous physics education research has raised the question of “hidden variables” behind students’ success in learning certain concepts. In the context of the force concept, it has been suggested that students’ reasoning ability is one such variable. Strong positive correlations between students’ preinstruction scores for reasoning ability (measured by Lawson’s Classroom Test of Scientific Reasoning) and their learning of forces [measured by the Force Concept Inventory (FCI)] have been reported in high school and university introductory courses. However, there is no published research concerning the relation between students’ ability to interpret multiple representations consistently (i.e.,…
