How Do We Know If There’s a Message?

2010

As we have seen, radio waves can be excellent candidates for interplanetary communication, due to the fact that our galaxy is transparent to them. The problem lies in properly identifying the origin – artificial or natural – of an arriving signal. When we tune a radio receiver and we turn the antenna toward the cosmos, we gather hundreds of different signals. Even some of the natural signals are quite suggestive, and one can be tempted to consider them emissions from other civilizations.

REFLECTIONS ON MANAGERIAL COMMUNICATION

2012

Modern management has given an extremely important place to managerial communication. It considers communication as a vital component of the managerial system of all organizations. A successful manager is the one that can communicate with the persons that he or she is leading, and the performance of an organization can be conditioned by the manner in which managers communicate. The identification of employees with the organizational goals, their channeling of efforts for the common objectives, the ability of the manager to assess the results of his or her decisions can be accomplished only by using the resources of managerial communication. A laconic, delayed or confused managerial communic…

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing in Patients with Chronic Heart Failure: Prognostic Comparison from Peak VO2 and VE/VCO2 Slope

2010

Background: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing with ventilatory expired gas analysis (CPET) has proven to be a valuable tool for assessing patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). The maximal oxygen uptake (peak V02) is used in risk stratification of patients with CHF. The minute ventilation-carbon dioxide production relationship (VE/VCO2 slope) has recently demonstrated prognostic significance in patients with CHF. Methods: Between January 2006 and December 2007 we performed CPET in 184 pts (146 M, 38 F, mean age 59.8 ± 12.9 years), with stable CHF (96 coronary artery disease, 88 dilated cardiomyopathy), in NYHA functional class II (n.107) - III (n.77), with left ventricular ejection frac…

FRIPON: a worldwide network to track incoming meteoroids

2020

Context. Until recently, camera networks designed for monitoring fireballs worldwide were not fully automated, implying that in case of a meteorite fall, the recovery campaign was rarely immediate. This was an important limiting factor as the most fragile - hence precious - meteorites must be recovered rapidly to avoid their alteration. Aims. The Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) scientific project was designed to overcome this limitation. This network comprises a fully automated camera and radio network deployed over a significant fraction of western Europe and a small fraction of Canada. As of today, it consists of 150 cameras and 25 European radio receiver…

Role of ambient light in the detection of contrast elements in digital dental radiography.

2018

Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different ambient light levels on observer detection of small contrast differences in a contrast phantom by using a high-end liquid crystal display (LCD) monitor. Study Design An aluminum step wedge was converted into a contrast phantom by the addition of bore holes. Radiographic images of the contrast elements were presented to 20 observers. Images were displayed in random order under different ambient light levels (0, 50, 200, and 500 lux) twice, and the observers had to determine if contrast elements were visible. Sensitivity and specificity were determined to calculate areas under receiver operating characteristic curves and Friedmann…

In vivo study of different methods for diagnosing pit and fissure caries

2015

Background In recent years the early detection of such caries has gained importance, since it may avoid unnecessary dental tissue damage and allow minimally invasive dental treatment. A study is made of 5 systems for diagnosing caries: traditional visual and tactile methods, DIAGNOdent, VistaProof and CarieScan. Material and Methods A prospective study was made in the Department of Stomatology, Dental Pathology and Therapeutics Teaching unit of the University of Valencia (Valencia, Spain), involving the analysis of 32 teeth (molars or premolars of both arches scheduled for filling or for use as posts in dental bridges) in 28 patients. The following caries diagnostic methods were applied: vi…

Duloxetine serum concentrations and clinical effects. Data from a therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) survey.

2009

INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to relate drug concentrations in serum and clinical effects in patients treated with the new antidepressant duloxetine. METHODS Data were obtained from a newly established therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) survey. Duloxetine was measured using HPLC with UV detection and clinical effects by the clinical global impressions (CGI) scale for improvement. RESULTS The study included 103 depressed inpatients (69% female). Patients under duloxetine monotherapy who were very much improved according to CGI had significantly (p<0.05) higher serum levels than patients with moderate, minimal or lacking improvement (mean+/-SD and range, 93+/-53 ng/mL and 30-182 ng/mL…

Predicting the risk of drug–drug interactions in psychiatric hospitals: a retrospective longitudinal pharmacovigilance study

2021

ObjectivesThe aim was to use routine data available at a patient’s admission to the hospital to predict polypharmacy and drug–drug interactions (DDI) and to evaluate the prediction performance with regard to its usefulness to support the efficient management of benefits and risks of drug prescriptions.DesignRetrospective, longitudinal study.SettingWe used data from a large multicentred pharmacovigilance project carried out in eight psychiatric hospitals in Hesse, Germany.ParticipantsInpatient episodes consecutively discharged between 1 October 2017 and 30 September 2018 (year 1) or 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2019 (year 2).Outcome measuresThe proportion of rightly classified hospital epi…

Improving Pattern Recognition Based Pharmacological Drug Selection Through ROC Analysis

2004

The design of new medical drugs is a very complex process in which combinatorial chemistry techniques are used. The goal consists of discriminating between molecular compounds exhibiting or not certain pharmacological activities. Different machine learning approaches have been recently applied to different drug design problems leading to competitive results in pointing at particular compounds with high probability of exhibiting activity. The present work first deeps into the natural trade-off between accuracy in the much less populated active group and false alarm rate which could lead to too many expensive laboratory tests. Preliminary results show how different classification techniques a…

Experimental Characterization of a Double Receiver Dynamic Wireless Charging System

2020

The aim of this work is the characterization of a dynamic wireless charging system low power prototype and the validation of a simplified mathematical model of the employed double D coils. The difference between a single receiver and a dual receiver system is also shown, highlighting how the last one can significantly reduce the costs of the charging infrastructure.
