Respiratory behaviour of a Zymomonas mobilis adhB::kan(r) mutant supports the hypothesis of two alcohol dehydrogenase isoenzymes catalysing opposite …

2006

AbstractPerturbation of the aerobic steady-state in a chemostat culture of the ethanol-producing bacterium Zymomonas mobilis with a small pulse of ethanol causes a burst of ethanol oxidation, although the reactant ratio of the alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) reaction ([NADH][acetaldehyde][H+])/([ethanol][NAD+]) remains above the Keq value. Simultaneous catalysis of ethanol synthesis and oxidation by the two ADH isoenzymes, residing in different redox microenvironments, has been proposed previously. In the present study, this hypothesis is verified by construction of an ADH-deficient strain and by demonstration that it lacks the oxidative burst in response to perturbation of its aerobic steady-s…

Copper-Containing Oxidases: Occurrence in Soil Microorganisms, Properties, and Applications

2009

Copper is an essential trace element in living systems, where it is used as a cofactor in many enzymatic redox reactions and oxygen transport. The copper-containing oxidases tyrosinase and laccase are widely distributed in soil microorganisms. Recently, progress has been made with respect to structural and catalytic data for the tyrosinase of the soil bacterium Streptomyces. The formation of eumelanins—dark polymers with multiple functionality (e.g., UV protection, immune defense)—is a well-established task of tyrosinases. An abundance of information exists on the structures and biochemical properties of fungal laccases. Many studies have demonstrated a physiological role for them in the de…

Designing biochar properties through the blending of biomass feedstock with metals: Impact on oxyanions adsorption behavior

2018

Metal-blending of biomass prior to pyrolysis is investigated in this work as a tool to modify biochar physico-chemical properties and its behavior as adsorbent. Six different compounds were used for metal-blending: AlCl3, Cu(OH)2, FeSO4, KCl, MgCl2 and Mg(OH)2. Pyrolysis experiments were performed at 400 and 700 °C and the characterization of biochar properties included: elemental composition, thermal stability, surface area and pore size distribution, Zeta potential, redox potential, chemical structure (with nuclear magnetic resonance) and adsorption behavior of arsenate, phosphate and nitrate. Metalblending strongly affected biochars' surface charge and redox potential. Moreover, it incre…

Life Cycle Assessment of Flow-Redox Cells: A Case Study

2022

European Union identified the battery value chain as strategic for achieving a sustainable and decarbonized economy. Focusing on the environmental sustainability of batteries, this paper presents an application of the Life Cycle Assessment methodology to three flow-redox cells characterized by electrodes made by different materials. The results are referred to one kWh of energy supplied by the cell during its useful life and are calculated following a “from cradle to grave” approach. Negligible differences (lower than 1.5%) are observed in the energy and environmental impacts of the three types of cells, mainly due to the type of electrode and the use phase. A dominance analysis shows that …

Coordination of expanded terpyridine ligands to cobalt

2013

Abstract The tridentate expanded terpyridine-like ligand N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-dipyridin-2-yl-pyridin-2,6-diamine (ddpd) and [Co(H2O)6](BF4)2 give the high-spin complex mer-[Co(ddpd)2](BF4)2 with a tetragonally compressed CoN6 coordination geometry according to X-ray diffraction and SQUID measurements. UV–Vis–NIR spectra indicate a large ligand field splitting close to the high-spin/low-spin crossover point. Oxidation of the CoII complex to CoIII is achieved with silver triflate. The self exchange between high-spin CoII and low-spin CoIII is slow on the NMR time scale.

Nonheme Fe(IV) Oxo Complexes of Two New Pentadentate Ligands and Their Hydrogen-Atom and Oxygen-Atom Transfer Reactions.

2015

Two new pentadentate {N5} donor ligands based on the N4Py (N4Py = N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-bis(2-pyridyl)methylamine) framework have been synthesized, viz. [N-(1-methyl-2-benzimidazolyl)methyl-N-(2-pyridyl)methyl-N-(bis-2-pyridyl methyl)amine] (L1) and [N-bis(1-methyl-2-benzimidazolyl)methyl-N-(bis-2-pyridylmethyl)amine] (L2), where one or two pyridyl arms of N4Py have been replaced by corresponding (N-methyl)benzimidazolyl-containing arms. The complexes [FeII(CH3CN)(L)]2+ (L = L1 (1); L2 (2)) were synthesized, and reaction of these ferrous complexes with iodosylbenzene led to the formation of the ferryl complexes [FeIV(O)(L)]2+ (L = L1 (3); L2 (4)), which were characterized by UV–vis spe…

Multielectron oxidation in a ferromagnetically coupled dinickel(ii) triple mesocate.

2015

Triple-stranded dinuclear nickel(ii) complexes of the meso-helicate type have been obtained from the new N,N'-1,3-phenylenebis(pyrazine-2-carboxamidate) ligand; they possess a multielectron redox behaviour featuring up to four stepwise, one-electron oxidation reactions of the two ferromagnetically coupled Ni(II) ions to afford the putative high-valent dinickel(iii) and dinickel(iv) species, as supported by theoretical calculations.

Redox Proteomics of the Inflammatory Secretome Identifies a Common Set of Redoxins and Other Glutathionylated Proteins Released in Inflammation, Infl…

2015

Protein cysteines can form transient disulfides with glutathione (GSH), resulting in the production of glutathionylated proteins, and this process is regarded as a mechanism by which the redox state of the cell can regulate protein function. Most studies on redox regulation of immunity have focused on intracellular proteins. In this study we have used redox proteomics to identify those proteins released in glutathionylated form by macrophages stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) after pre-loading the cells with biotinylated GSH. Of the several proteins identified in the redox secretome, we have selected a number for validation. Proteomic analysis indicated that LPS stimulated the releas…
