The good, the bad and the ugly – A visual guide for common post-mortem wear patterns in vertebrate teeth
2021
Abstract Dental microwear texture analysis (DMTA) is a common wear proxy using dental wear features to reconstruct diet in extant and extinct taxa. Dietary reconstructions of extinct species can be biased due to post-mortem mechanical modification of the dental surface. These post-mortem surface alterations can be caused by material loss after death, or as the result of burial, excavation, or preparation processes. In this study, we explore post-mortem surface alterations that occur during excavation, preparation, and conservation processes. We present a first general overview of unsuitable and suspicious dental surface scans and describe them both qualitatively and quantitatively using den…
A new reference database for beta-delayed neutrons
2019
International audience; A new database containing all available experimental and evaluated β-delayed neutron data is presented in this paper. The database is the product of an international effort coordinated by the International Atomic Energy Agency. It comprises a microscopic section including all available experimental data on beta-decay half-lives, β-delayed neutron emission probabilities and spectra, as well as new systematics and global theoretical calculations for comparison. The beta-delayed neutron data for individual precursors have been benchmarked against available data on macroscopic properties such as total delayed-neutron yields and spectra, delayed-neutron decay curves and t…
Parameter-free density functional for the correlation energy in two dimensions
2010
Accurate treatment of the electronic correlation in inhomogeneous electronic systems, combined with the ability to capture the correlation energy of the homogeneous electron gas, allows to reach high predictive power in the application of density-functional theory. For two-dimensional systems we can achieve this goal by generalizing our previous approximation [Phys. Rev. B 79, 085316 (2009)] to a parameter-free form, which reproduces the correlation energy of the homogeneous gas while preserving the ability to deal with inhomogeneous systems. The resulting functional is shown to be very accurate for finite systems with an arbitrary number of electrons with respect to numerically exact refer…
Colle-Salvetti-type local density functional for the exchange-correlation energy in two dimensions
2010
We derive an approximate local density functional for the exchange-correlation energy to be used in density-functional calculations of two-dimensional systems. In the derivation we employ the Colle-Salvetti wave function within the scheme of Salvetti and Montagnani [Phys. Rev. A 63, 052109 (2001)] to satisfy the sum rule for the exchange-correlation hole. We apply the functional for the two-dimensional homogeneous electron gas as well as to a set of quantum dots and find a very good agreement with exact reference data.
Semi-local density functional for the exchange-correlation energy of electrons in two dimensions
2010
We present a practical and accurate density functional for the exchange-correlation energy of electrons in two dimensions. The exchange part is based on a recent two-dimensional generalized-gradient approximation derived by considering the limits of small and large density gradients. The fully local correlation part is constructed following the Colle-Salvetti scheme and a Gaussian approximation for the pair density. The combination of these expressions is shown to provide an efficient density functional to calculate the total energies of two-dimensional electron systems such as semiconductor quantum dots. Excellent performance of the functional with respect to numerically exact reference da…
A Projection Pursuit Algorithm for Preference Data
2018
In the framework of preference rankings, the interest can lie in finding which predictors and which interactions are able to explain the observed preference structures. The last years have seen a remarkable owering of works about the use of decision tree for clustering preference vectors. As a matter of fact, decision trees are useful and intuitive, but they are very unstable: small perturbations bring big changes. This is the reason why it could be necessary to use more stable procedures in order to clustering ranking data. In this work, following the idea of Bolton (2003), a Projection Pursuit (PP) clustering algorithm for preference data will be proposed in order to extract useful inform…
Toward the Standardization of Mitochondrial Proteomics: The Italian Mitochondrial Human Proteome Project Initiative
2017
The Mitochondrial Human Proteome Project aims at understanding the function of the mitochondrial proteome and its crosstalk with the proteome of other organelles. Being able to choose a suitable and validated enrichment protocol of functional mitochondria, based on the specific needs of the downstream proteomics analysis, would greatly help the researchers in the field. Mitochondrial fractions from ten model cell lines were prepared using three enrichment protocols and analyzed on seven different LC-MS/MS platforms. All data were processed using neXtProt as reference database. The data are available for the Human Proteome Project purposes through the ProteomeXchange Consortium with the iden…
Vertical take-off and landing air transport to provide tourist mobility.
2012
Abstract This paper examines helicopter transfer services to reach attractive and not very accessible tourist areas, taking Sicily and its minor islands, in the South of Italy, as a case study. We investigate the viability of helicopter scheduled services for tourists moving from/to airports or doing one day tours to visit far away places. The mode choice of tourists is simulated using random utility models employing stated preference data. Heli-shuttle service is planned in terms of fleet size, frequency, fare and location pattern of heliports. The paper also analyses how a public subsidy reducing fares might change the set of feasible connections.
Item weighted Kemeny distance for preference data
2019
Preference data represent a particular type of ranking data where a group of people gives their preferences over a set of alternatives. The traditional metrics between rankings don’t take into account that the importance of elements can be not uniform. In this paper the item weighted Kemeny distance is introduced and its properties demonstrated.
COMPARISON OF TWO SIMPLIFICATION METHODS FOR SHORELINE EXTRACTION FROM DIGITAL ORTHOPHOTO IMAGES
2018
Abstract. The coastal ecosystems are very sensitive to external influences. Coastal resources such as sand dunes, coral reefs and mangroves has vital importance to prevent coastal erosion. Human based effects also threats the coastal areas. Therefore, the change of coastal areas should be monitored. Up-to-date, accurate shoreline information is indispensable for coastal managers and decision makers. Remote sensing and image processing techniques give a big opportunity to obtain reliable shoreline information. In the presented study, NIR bands of seven 1:5000 scaled digital orthophoto images of Riga Bay-Latvia have been used. The Object-oriented Simple Linear Clustering method has been utili…
