4C 39.25: Multi-epoch polarisation observations at 15, 22 and 43 GHz

1999

We present multi-epoch simultaneous 15, 22 and 43 GHz VLBA polarimetric radio observations of the quasar 4C 39.25 which provide further evidence for the ongoing interaction between components `a' and `b' through the monitoring of the total and polarised flux densities of both components, the proper motion of `b' and, more importantly, of the polarisation angle associated with components `a' and `b'. There are strong pieces of evidence indicating that the superluminal component `b' is “colliding” or “crossing” the region associated with the stationary component `a': (i) at millimeter wavelengths, the total flux density of 4C 39.25 has reached a maximum and is already beginning to decline; (i…

Numerical prediction of flow fields in baffled stirred vessels: A comparison of alternative modelling approaches

1998

Abstract Numerical simulations of the flow field in baffled mixing tanks, based on three alternative methods, are presented and discussed. In the first method, the impeller is not explicitly simulated, and its effects are modelled by imposing suitable, empirically derived, boundary conditions to the external flow. In the second method, the whole vessel volume is divided into two concentric, partially overlapping, regions. In the inner region, containing the impeller, the flow field is simulated in the rotating reference frame of the latter, while in the outer region simulations are conducted in the reference frame of the laboratory. Information is iteratively exchanged between the two regio…

Piecewise planar underwater mosaicing

2015

A commonly ignored problem in planar mosaics, yet often present in practice, is the selection of a reference homography reprojection frame where to attach the successive image frames of the mosaic. A bad choice for the reference frame can lead to severe distortions in the mosaic and can degenerate in incorrect configurations after some sequential frame concatenations. This problem is accentuated in uncontrolled underwater acquisition setups as those provided by AUVs or ROVs due to both the noisy trajectory of the acquisition vehicle — with roll and pitch shakes — and to the non-flat nature of the seabed which tends to break the planarity assumption implicit in the mosaic construction. These…

Promoting Democratic and Intercultural Competences in the Primary School Context: The experience of “Children’s Voices for a new Human Space”

2021

The promotion of citizen’s democratic and intercultural competence is one of the main actions that European societies may take against some of the most significant challenges they are facing nowadays. The paper is aimed at briefly describing the Council of Europe’s Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture, some actions that can be taken to promote democratic and intercultural competences and a case of implementation of this framework in the context of primary school, that is the Erasmus+ Project “Children’s Voices for a new Human Space” (CVS). The paper also aims at illustrating the intellectual outputs produced by CVS project consisting in a training course for teachers, a…

Flow and Deformation

1998

A hunter who investigates tracks in muddy ground near a waterhole may be able to reconstruct which animals arrived last, but older tracks will be partly erased or modified. A geologist faces similar problems to reconstruct the changes in shape that a volume of rock underwent in the course of geological time, since the end products, the rocks that are visible in outcrop, are the only direct data source. In many cases it is nevertheless possible to reconstruct at least part of the tectonic history of a rock from this final fabric. This chapter treats the change in shape of rocks and the methods that can be used to investigate and describe this change in shape. This is the field of kinematics,…

Geodetic data analysis of VGOS experiments

2021

Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) serves as one of the common geodetic methods to define the global reference frames and monitor Earth's orientation variations. The technical upgrade of the VLBI method known as the VLBI Global Observing System (VGOS) includes a critical re-design of the observed frequencies from the dual band mode (S and X band, i.e. 2 GHz and 8 GHz) to observations in a broadband (2 – 14 GHz). Since 2019 the first VGOS experiments are available for the geodetic analysis in free access at the International VLBI service for Geodesy and Astrometry (IVS). Also regional-only subnetworks such as European VLBI stations have succeeded already in VGOS mode. Based on these br…

2020

Visually induced motion sickness is an unpleasant but common side-effect of many simulations and VR-applications. We investigated whether an earth-fixed reference frame provided in the simulation is able to reduce motion sickness. To do so, we created a moving starfield that did not contain any indicators of the spatial orientation of the observer. The observer wore a head-mounted display (HTC Vive) and was simulated to move through the randomly oscillating starfield, a time-to-contact task had to be carried out. Two colored stars on collision course with each other had to be spotted, then they disappeared and the time of their collision had to be judged. Eye-movements, task performance, an…

Optimization of Delayed-State Kalman-Filter-based Algorithm via Differential Evolution for Sensorless Control of Induction Motors

2010

This paper proposes the employment of the differential evolution (DE) to offline optimize the covariance matrices of a new reduced delayed-state Kalman-filter (DSKF)-based algorithm which estimates the stator-flux linkage components, in the stationary reference frame, to realize sensorless control of induction motors (IMs). The DSKF-based algorithm uses the derivatives of the stator-flux components as mathematical model and the stator-voltage equations as observation model so that only a vector of four variables has to be offline optimized. Numerical results, carried out using a low-speed training test, show that the proposed DE-based approach is very promising and clearly outperforms a cla…

Feedback Linearizing Control of Induction Motor Considering Magnetic Saturation Effects

2015

This paper presents an input-output feedback linearization (FL) control technique for rotating induction motors, which takes into consideration the magnetic saturation of the iron core. Starting from a new formulation of the dynamic model taking into consideration the magnetic saturation expressed in a space-state form in the rotor-flux-oriented reference frame, the corresponding FL technique has been developed. To this aim, a particular care has been given to the choice of nonlinear functions interpolating the magnetic parameters versus the rotor magnetizing current and the corresponding magnetic characteristic. The proposed FL technique has been tested experimentally on a suitably develop…

Impact of the terrestrial reference frame on the determination of the celestial reference frame.

2022

Currently three up-to-date Terrestrial Reference Frames (TRF) are available, the ITRF2014 from IGN, the DTRF2014 from DGFI-TUM, and JTRF2014 from JPL. All use the identical input data of space-geodetic station positions and Earth orientation parameters, but the concept of combining these data is fundamentally different. The IGN approach is based on the combination of technique solutions, while the DGFI is combining the normal equation systems. Both yield in reference epoch coordinates and velocities for a global set of stations. JPL uses a Kalman filter approach, realizing a TRF through weekly time series of geocentric coordinates. As the determination of the CRF is not independent of the T…
