Developmental dyslexia: re-evaluation of the corpus callosum in male adults.
2000
Using a new method based upon the measurement of four angles, we analyzed the corpus callosum of 23 adult male dyslexics and 25 age-matched controls on MRI sagittal scans. Two out of the four angles measured showed significant differences between the groups that are consistent with previous findings concerning the size of the corpus callosum in dyslexics. In particular, posterior regions are concerned, displaying a lowered corpus callosum in dyslexics. These findings are discussed in relation to cortical parietal asymmetries and possible hormonal events, referring to the testosterone hypothesis, that could occur in utero or in the perinatal period in the dyslexic population.
Extra-tympanic electrocochleography in a normal population. A descriptive study.
2015
Abstract Introduction and objectives Extra-tympanic electrocochleography is an electrophysiological register obtained after stimulating the cochlea with an audible stimulus. This stimulus is applied using an earphone over the external auditory canal, while the electrical activity is registered by surface electrodes. There are few studies that analyse normal electrocochleography in our environment. Thus, the main objective of our study was to regularise the values obtained with electrocochleography in ears without any otoneurological diseases. We explain in detail the process of obtaining the register. Methods Sixty healthy ears were studied by extratympanic electrocochleography. Statistical…
Associations of cardiovascular risk factors and retinal vessel dimensions at present and their evolution over time in a healthy working population.
2019
Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate whether an association between retinal vessel diameters with blood pressure and other risk factors exists in a healthy working population and whether current risk factors can be used as predictors for retinal vessel changes over time. Methods Retinal photographs and medical data were obtained during a voluntary work health check in 2010 and 2013. The central retinal arterial equivalent (CRAE) and central retinal venular equivalent (CRVE) were assessed using a semi-automated software. Linear regression analysis was carried out to determine associations with systemic parameters and cardiovascular risk factors. Results A total of 1685 participan…
The spectrum of circadian blood pressure changes in type I diabetic patients.
2001
Background The objective of the present study was to characterize the spectrum of circadian blood pressure changes in type I diabetes at different stages of nephropathy by using two monitorings in each patient in order to avoid intra-individual variability. Patients and methods A total of 80 type I diabetic subjects and the same number of age, sex and awake mean blood pressure (BP)-matched controls were included. According to urinary albumin excretion, there were 57 normoalbuminurics, 15 persistent microalbuminurics and eight proteinurics. Two 24 h ambulatory blood pressure monitorings were performed at the same urinary albumin excretion stage in absence of antihypertensive treatment for ea…
Polymorphisms of the renin-angiotensin system influence height in normotensive women in a Spanish population.
2004
The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of the polymorphisms G-6A of the angiotensinogen gene, insertion/deletion (I/D) of the angiotensin-converting enzyme, and C573T of the angiotensin II AT1 receptor gene on a healthy, middle-age population. A total of 370 (194 women) healthy normotensive Caucasian subjects, aged 25-50 yr old, were selected from the general population. A significant association was found between height and the C573T polymorphism in women (P0.001). After adjustment for age, this association remained significant (P0.002). Thus, the lowest height values were from subjects carrying TT genotype (CC, 1.627 +/- 0.008 m; CT, 1.595 +/- 0.006 m; TT, 1.586 +/- 0.01…
Enhanced oxidative susceptibility and reduced antioxidant content of metabolic precursors of small, dense low-density lipoproteins.
2001
Abstract PURPOSE: Elevated plasma concentrations of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) increase risk for coronary heart disease. However, lipoprotein profiles rich in small, dense LDL particles confer greater risk than those that mainly consist of large, buoyant LDL. This may be due, in part, to the greater oxidative susceptibility of small, dense LDL. In the current studies, we tested whether differences in the oxidative behavior of buoyant and dense LDL arise from differences in their immediate metabolic precursors, intermediate-density lipoproteins. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We compared the properties of intermediate-density lipoproteins and buoyant and dense LDL subfractions in 9 subjects with …
Lipid-free apolipoprotein (apo) A-I is converted into alpha-migrating high density lipoproteins by lipoprotein-depleted plasma of normolipidemic dono…
1998
Plasma of patients with Tangier disease (TD) is devoid of alpha-LpA-I (apolipoprotein A-I-containing lipoprotein), which in normolipidemic plasma constitutes the majority of high density lipoprotein (HDL). The residual amounts of apolipoprotein A-I (apo A-I) in TD plasma have electrophoretic prebeta1-LpA-I mobility. We have previously demonstrated that TD plasma does not convert prebeta1-LpA-I into alpha-LpA-I. In this study we found that plasmas of normolipidemic controls, apo A-I-deficient patients and patients with fish-eye disease, but not plasmas of six TD patients, convert biotinylated lipid-free apo A-I into alpha-LpA-I. Supplementation of plasma with free oleic acid or fatty acid fr…
High Plasma Phospholipid Transfer Protein Levels as a Risk Factor for Coronary Artery Disease
2003
Objective— Plasma phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) mediates both net transfer and exchange of phospholipids between different lipoproteins. Animal studies have shown that it is closely related to the development of atherosclerosis. PLTP-deficient mice have demonstrated increased antioxidation potential as well as a decrease in apolipoprotein B secretion and atherosclerotic lesions. In humans, high PLTP is associated with type II diabetes and obesity. Methods and Results— To assess the relationship between PLTP activity and coronary artery disease (CAD), a novel, high-throughput method to measure plasma PLTP activity was used, relating it to CAD in 1102 cases and 444 controls. This demo…
The Phenomenon of a High Triglyceride Response to an Oral Lipid Load in Healthy Subjects and Its Link to the Metabolic Syndrome
1993
Excessive postprandial triglyceride (TG) responses despite normal fasting TG levels have been described in single cases within small groups of healthy subjects and in patients with obesity or precocious atherosclerosis, known to be associated with high insulin fasting levels. To clarify this association, fasting and postprandial TG and insulin levels were studied in 113 healthy young (25.7 +/- 2.6 years), normal weight (body mass index 20.8 +/- 2.3 kg/m2) male subjects who were selected from among 117 subjects on the basis of TG fasting levels200 mg/dl. After a 12-hour fast a standardized liquid lipid load was administered containing 58 g mainly saturated fat and 1,017 kcal energy. Both fas…
Multisectorial changes in the ciliary muscle during accommodation measured with high-resolution optical coherence tomography
2019
ABSTRACT Purpose: To measure changes in the anterior ciliary muscle during accommodation at the nasal, superior, temporal, and inferior sectors by means of an anterior chamber optical coherence tomographer, and correlate them with vergence changes. Methods: Twenty-four subjects with healthy, phakic eyes, whose mean age was 27.1 ± 8.9 years, underwent measurement with an anterior chamber optical coherence tomographer. The anterior ciliary muscle was measured at the nasal, temporal, superior, and inferior sectors for 0, -1, -2, and -3 D of vergence. A linear model was used to assess the correlation of each eye parameter with the accommodative demand. Results: The anterior ciliary muscle area …
