The 60 kDa heat shock proteins (HSP 60) have been well conserved throughout evolution and are highly immunogenic. Cross-reactivity between bacterial and mammalian HSP 60 is considered a likely mechanism in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. T cell and B cell reactivity to HSP 60 is found in patients with rheumatoid or juvenile arthritis, and the expression of HSP 60 in the inflamed joint is found to be increased. In this study the presence of HSP 60 was demonstrated in normal and inflamed lives. Therefore, the authors decided to analyze the corneal thickness in healthy emmetropic subjects. Abstract Healthy controls are subjects without the disease being studied but may have other conditions indirectly affecting outcome. In the present epidemics of obesity a few subjects with undiagnosed nonalcoholic fatty liver disease enter clinical studies as controls, producing biased results. Stricter selection criteria should be considered to prevent this risk.

Lipopolysaccharide and its receptor, CD14, have been implicated in atherogenesis. It has been recently shown that a C(-260)T polymorphism in the promoter of the CD14 receptor may be a risk factor for coronary artery disease.
