Comparison of BT-PABA test and fecal chymotrypsin measurements in normal subjects and diabetic patients

1990

A N-benzoil-L-tyrosil-PABA test on 6h urine collection, a plasma PABA assay 2 h after administration and a fecal chymotrypsin assay were performed on 66 patients (36 controls and 30 type 2 diabetic patients on insulin therapy). All patients were hospitalized and without gastrointestinal and renal disease. The mean values of plasmatic PABA and fecal chymotrypsin were significantly lower in the diabetic group than in the controls (p less than 0.025 and p less than 0.01, respectively), although they remained within normal range. But this was not the case for PABA urinary excretion values. This may indicate a slower but more protracted PABA absorption during the third or fourth hour with the re…

Effects of progressive resistance exercise in akinetic-rigid Parkinson's disease patients: a randomized controlled trial.

2017

Progressive resistance exercise (PRE) can have a positive effect in individuals with Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, the effect of PRE may vary with the clinical subtype of PD. To date, no study has assessed the effects of PRE in the different subtypes of PD. AIM: The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of PRE in PD patients with akinesia and rigidity (AR-subtype). DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial was conducted. SETTING: Outpatients clinics of the Bierzo Parkinson Association (Ponferrada, Spain) and the Asturias Parkinson Association (Oviedo, Spain). POPULATION: Twenty-eight patients with AR-subtype PD were randomized into an Experimental Group (EG, N.=13) and Control…

Kidney size in childhood sonographical growth charts for kidney length and volume

1985

Kidney size was determined in a sonographic study of 325 children without kidney pathology. Real-time ultrasound equipment adjusted for the pediatric age group, provided standardized renal biometry. Outer kidney diameters showed a linear correlation to somatic developmental parameters. Renal volume was established by the formula for an ellipsoid and showed good correlation to body weight. Growth charts for kidney length and volume in childhood are constructed and provide the basis for objective intra- and interindividual determination of renal size.

Influence of Concurrent Obesity and Low Birth Weight on Blood Pressure Phenotype in Youth

2009

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of obesity and low birth weight on both office and ambulatory blood pressure (BP) values, as well as on aortic-derived parameters in youths. A total of 422 white youths, from 10 to 18 years of age, were included. Subjects were divided into 4 groups according to the presence (234; 55%) or the absence (188; 45%) of obesity and according to low (114; 27%) or normal (308; 73%, birth weight. Spacelabs 90207 was used to measure ambulatory BP during a 24-hour period. SphygmoCor radial/aortic transform software was used to estimate aortic pressure waveform. Office, 24-hour, daytime, and nighttime systolic BP values were significantly higher in those s…

Relationship between birth weight and awake blood pressure in children and adolescents in absence of intrauterine growth retardation.

1996

This study was designed to examine the relationship between birth weight (BW) and ambulatory blood pressure in children and adolescents, born at term in absence of intrauterine growth retardation. Twenty-four hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) was performed on 332 children (150 boys), aged from 6 to 16 years. Subjects were stratified by BW tertiles and age. ABPM was performed using SpaceLabs 90207 monitor during a regular school day. Blood pressure (BP) was measured every 20 min from 06:00 to 24:00, and thereafter every 30 min. Means of systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) during 24 h, daytime (08:00 to 22:00), and nighttime (24:00 to 06:00) were calculated. Systolic and d…

Response of genetically obese Zucker rats to ciprofibrate, a hypolipidemic agent, with peroxisome proliferation activity as compared to Zucker lean a…

1993

Genetically obese Zucker (fa/fa) rats were used as an experimental model to study the effects of hypolipidemic agents on peroxisome proliferation; comparison was made with Zucker lean phenotype (Fa/-) and Sprague-Dawley strain/phenotype. The pharmacokinetics of a single administration of ciprofibrate (1 or 3 mg/kg), appeared to be similar in all strains/phenotypes. After a 2-week oral administration at the same dosages, there were dosage-related increases in hepatocellular peroxisomal yield and in the hepatic enzymes' cyanide-insensitive acyl-CoA oxidase and catalase. The peroxisomal yield was less increased in Zucker than in Sprague-Dawley rats, while the enzyme activities were similarly i…

Mass Concentration of Plasma Phospholipid Transfer Protein in Normolipidemic, Type IIa Hyperlipidemic, Type IIb Hyperlipidemic, and Non–Insulin-Depen…

1999

Abstract —Mean plasma phospholipid transfer protein (PLTP) concentrations were measured for the first time by using a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. PLTP mass levels and phospholipid transfer activity values, which were significantly correlated among normolipidemic plasma samples ( r =0.787, P <0.0001), did not differ between normolipidemic subjects (3.95±1.04 mg/L and 575±81 nmol · mL −1 · h −1 , respectively; n=30), type IIa hyperlipidemic patients (4.06±0.84 mg/L and 571±43 nmol · mL −1 · h −1 , respectively; n=36), and type IIb hyperlipidemic patients (3.90±0.79 mg/L and 575±48 nmol · mL −1 · h −1 , respectively; n=33). No significant correlations with plasma lipid p…

Myogenic NOS and endogenous NO production are defective in colon from dystrophic (mdx) mice.

2001

The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether alterations in the distribution and/or function of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) could be involved in the development of the spontaneous mechanical tone observed in colon from dystrophic ( mdx) mice. By recording the intraluminal pressure of isolated colon from normal mice, we showed that Nω-nitro- l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME) increased the tone, even in the presence of tetrodotoxin. The effect was prevented by l-arginine, nifedipine, or Ca2+-free solution. In colon from mdx mice, l-NAME was ineffective. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the presence and distribution of neuronal (nNOS), endothelial, and inducible NOS isoforms in smooth…
