Comparing normal means: new methods for an old problem

Comparing the means of two normal populations is an old problem in mathematical statistics, but there is still no consensus about its most appropriate solution. In this paper we treat the problem of comparing two normal means as a Bayesian decision problem with only two alternatives: either to accept the hypothesis that the two means are equal, or to conclude that the observed data are, under the assumed model, incompatible with that hypothesis. Incorporating stand level risk management options into forest decision support systems

Aim of study: To examine methods of incorporating risk and uncertainty to stand level forest decisions. Area of study: A case study examines a small forest holding from Jonkoping, Sweden. Material and methods: We incorporate empirically estimated uncertainty into the simulation through a Monte Carlo approach when simulating the forest stands for the next 100 years. For the iterations of the Monte Carlo approach, errors were incorporated into the input data which was simulated according to the Heureka decision support system. Determining the implementation order of a general plan by using a multicriteria method

We describe a real-life application of a new multicriteria method in the context of assisting the decision-making for a general plan in the municipality of Kirkkonummi in Uusimaa, Finland. At the time our group started working on the problem, a proposal for an overall plan had already been completed, but the order in which different regional parts of the plan should be implemented needed to be considered based on the environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure. The EIA procedure generated a large amount of data about the different impacts of the alternatives. The geographical location of Morocco places it at the heart of important sea, air, rail and motorway transport routes between four continents. In this study we evaluate different alternatives to centralize multimodal cargo at a Moroccan airport hub. The choice depends on different socio-economical criteria, the geographical location, and the environmental impacts. Some of the criteria can be measured quantitatively, while for others only qualitative assessment is feasible. Flow injection near-infrared determination of ethanol in chloroform

A simple and direct flow injection (FIA) procedure has been developed for the determination of the stabilizing agent ethanol in chloroform samples. The procedure is based on the use of the absorbance band of ethanol in the near-infrared (NIR) region at 2272 nm, measured in front of a reference sample of chloroform stabilized with amylene. The method developed provides a limit of detection of 0.0045% (v/v) and a dynamic range until 10% (v/v) with a typical variation coefficient of 0.4% for six independent analysis of a real sample containing approximately 1% (v/v) of ethanol. The sample injection frequency allowed by the method is 78 h−1.

Abstract Two stopped-flow manifolds have been proposed for individual or simultaneous determination of chromium and cobalt in water samples. Automated procedures based on multicommutation systems have emphasised the differences of their catalytic effect in luminol–hydrogen peroxide chemiluminescence reaction.
