Partial least squares attenuated total reflectance IR spectroscopy versus chromatography: the greener method

2012

Method election is a complex task that must be done carefully in order to ensure the capability of analytical methodologies to provide appropriate data for problem solving. This is a real challenge in all fields, but especially with bioanalysis, which in many cases involves the need to do a large number of determinations in complex

Fast authentication of tea tree oil through spectroscopy

2018

Two new procedures, based on infrared spectroscopy in the near infrared (NIR) and mid infrared (MIR), have been developed for the authentication of tea tree oil (TTO) commercial samples. Infrared measurements were made on untreated samples by transmission NIR and attenuated total reflectance (ATR) followed by partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). These methods offer a fast and low cost alternative to enantiomeric two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to mass detection usually employed to discriminate between authentic and non-authentic samples. In these studies, a set of 267 samples, including authentic and non-authentic labelled tea tree oil samples, were used to build …

Comparison of two vibrational procedures for the direct determination of mancozeb in agrochemicals.

2007

The direct determination of mancozeb in agrochemicals has been made by diamond attenuated total reflectance (ATR) Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in the middle range (DATR-MIR) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy in the near range (DR-NIR) methods using in both cases a previous identification of the samples using a dendrographic classification and an appropriate partial least squares (PLS) calibration established from a set of nine external standards and optimized for each type of sample. It was analyzed a heterogeneous population of 11 samples obtained from the Spanish market, containing different co-formulated products, such as fosetyl-Al, copper oxychl…

Essential oil counterfeit identification through middle infrared spectroscopy

2018

Abstract Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) has been employed for a fast quality control of commercial essential oils from different plant species. 47 samples were obtained from Algerian and Spanish market and directly measured, without any previous treatment, by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), in the wavenumber region between 4000 and 550 cm−1. Pure essential oils were obtained by hydro- and steam-distillation extraction methods and their ATR spectra obtained. Results found evidenced the presence of solvents in some commercial formulations and permitted a rapid authentication of pure essential oils correctly extracted from those diluted. The propo…

Origin based classification of crude oils by infrared spectrometry and chemometrics

2019

Abstract Crude oil samples from different Iranian petrol resources in both, raw and mixture forms have been characterized by attenuated total reflectance mid infrared spectroscopy. Obtained spectra were classified by chemometric techniques to propose a method for geological based classification of crude oil samples. Totally 251 samples from 7 petrol fields and 3 mixtures were analyzed. Mean centering and principal component analysis (PCA) supported – leverage value based outlier detection were used as preprocessing approaches. PCA, cluster analysis and soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA) were utilized to classify the spectra. Obtained results confirmed that SIMCA is a robust …

Antennas for the detection of radio emission pulses from cosmic-ray induced air showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory.

2012

The Pierre Auger Observatory is exploring the potential of the radio detection technique to study extensive air showers induced by ultra-high energy cosmic rays. The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) addresses both technological and scientific aspects of the radio technique. A first phase of AERA has been operating since September 2010 with detector stations observing radio signals at frequencies between 30 and 80 MHz. In this paper we present comparative studies to identify and optimize the antenna design for the final configuration of AERA consisting of 160 individual radio detector stations. The transient nature of the air shower signal requires a detailed description of the antenna s…

Fitbit for learning: Towards capturing the learning experience using wearable sensing

2020

The assessment of learning during class activities mostly relies on standardized questionnaires to evaluate the efficacy of the learning design elements. However, standardized questionnaires pose additional strain on students, do not provide “temporal” information during the learning experience, require considerable effort and language competence, and sometimes are not appropriate. To overcome these challenges, we propose using wearable devices, which allow for continuous and unobtrusive monitoring of physiological parameters during learning. In this paper we set out to quantify how well we can infer students’ learning experience from wrist-worn devices capturing physiological data. We coll…

Detection of local specular gloss and surface roughness from black prints

2007

A combination of optical and tomographic imaging techniques for inspection of local surface roughness and specular gloss of black prints and coated paper are introduced. A diffractive optical-element-based glossmeter (DOG) and a low-coherence interferometer (LCI) were used to obtain local information about the print in terms of topographic and gloss maps. X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT) was used to obtain 3D local structural information of the coated paper. Gloss and topographic maps were used to determine statistical gloss and roughness parameters. These parameters were useful when analysing the surface condition of prints and coated paper. We found an orientation-dependent gloss slop…

Colour segmentation based on a light reflection model to locate citrus fruits for robotic harvesting

1993

Abstract Colour segmentation with a vision system is a good procedure to identify and locate fruits in robotic harvesting. Natural illumination conditions present in these environments produce a very variable illumination of the scene, in addition, fruits are usually partially occluded, and complete visual information about them is not available. The colour segmentation used for these purposes must take into account the appearance of highlights and shadows that natural illumination conditions produce. A method based on the Dichromatic Reflection Model for the light reflected from the surface object is reported here. Through the assumption of this model the light rays reflected from points o…
