Formulating a Revised Taxonomy for Modes of Listening

2012

Abstract Listening to sounds or music is not a homogeneous act of grasping meanings by hearing. Yet it is often portrayed as such, especially when the intentional stance of a listener is overlooked. This paper distinguishes listening as the action-oriented intentional activity of making sense of the world. It is proposed that the multifaceted and heterogeneous nature of ‘understanding by listening’ can be outlined in terms of distinct modes of listening. Building upon previous accounts, a revised taxonomy of nine listening modes (reflexive, kinaesthetic, connotative, causal, empathetic, functional, semantic, reduced and critical listening) is proposed and illustrated by examples. Modes refe…

Parlare per ascoltarsi. Note su alcuni aspetti dell'interlocuzione.

2015

This paper considers the nature of interlocution from the point of view of three different research programs: the theory of enunciative operations of Antoine Culioli (or toe), the psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan (or pla) and the enactive grammar of Didier Bottineau (or ge). It is composed of three parts: in the first part, we introduce some definitions of interlocution in order to distinguish between terms and empirical supports of interlocution. The second part is devoted to the analysis of some sensorial operations that are at work in the context of verbal inter- action – with particular reference to the cases of acoustic feedback. Finally, in the last part we discuss in which sense and u…

Open Educational Resources’ impact and outcomes: The essence of OpenKnowledge and its social contribution

2018

This article identifies the main social contributions of Open Educational Resources (OERs), their impact and the results of several initiatives related to them. Based on a theoretical and reflexive framework, we analyze the evolution of business models around OERs, their contribution to open knowledge and the common educational policies related to this phenomenon. Finally, we point out the new horizons and models of knowledge based on OERs. Design/methodology/approach: This study utilizes a theoretical and conceptual framework based on references coming from journals with an impact factor, complemented with quotes by important authors and OER representatives. The review offers a conceptual …

La line drawing technique come strumento di ricerca e di formazione del professionista riflessivo nei percorsi TFA

2017

From a theoretical-methodological framework (Schön, 1993, 2006; Orland, 2000) on the use of visual techniques and specific methods for forming the reflexivity, the paper presents the line drawing technique, a form of graphical representation of your professional career used as a cognitive survey tool and as a training mode to the reflective thinking of students preparing to become teachers of secondary school first and second grade. Using a qualitative methodology, it was realized the collection and analysis of 232 graphical representations of many trainees in training, who frequented the TFA paths (active Traineeships) in the academic year 2014-2015.

On natural metalinguistic abilities in aphasia: a preliminary study

2012

Background: Natural metalinguistic abilities, which are put into play without explicit instructions, constitute the cognitive basis for a “reflexive” use of language, a particular manifestation of the executive function when applied to language and verbal behaviour. This reflexive use entails a specific attentional activity by speakers and hearers with regard to linguistic outputs, and an intentional experience-based control over the language use. Putting into play natural metalinguistic abilities can be considered a significant factor for explaining different kinds of adaptive processes. Aims: Preliminary research on natural metalinguistic abilities as manifested in people with aphasia wil…

The reflexivity of human languaging and Nigel Love's two orders of language

2017

Abstract Nigel Love's distinction between first-order language and second-order language exposes the fallacy of the code view of linguistic communication. Persons do not ‘use’ the forms that are said to constitute a pre-existing language system; they adapt and shape their bodily behaviour, including their vocalizing, in accordance with community-level norms and practices that have historical continuity and thus define the cultural-historical traditions of a community. Individuals normatively orient to these continuities and self-reflexively engage in forms of situated appropriation of them as they flexibly adapt them to the requirements of situations in the pursuance of their goals. Love ha…

Heteroglossia as a resource for reflexive participation in a community of Christian snowboarders in Finland

2013

This paper addresses the ways in which linguistic heteroglossia is mobilized to construct participation in a youth cultural community of practice. The analysis focuses on spoken interaction among Christian snowboarders in Finland, and specifically on how the community members create social meanings by using their shared linguistic resources (e.g. religious register or snowboarding terminology). These socially indexical resources gain new meanings when the snowboarders engage in debates concerning gender, expertise and literal versus non-literal interpretations of the Bible. During specific interactive events, they reflect on their responses to different Biblical discourses, thus aiming to r…

Intellectual engagements of accounting academics: The ‘forecasted losses' intervention

2022

This paper explores the social and political potential of accounting scholarship, presenting and discussing an intellectual intervention challenging a legislative reform that significantly affected Spanish industrial relations. In this reform, an accounting artifact (forecasted losses) played an unexpected role and was misrepresented, prompting a sizeable number of scholars to sign two manifestos in 2010 and 2012 against the use of forecasted losses made by the new legislation. As promoters of this manifesto, we perform in this paper a collaborative autoethnography to reflect on the context, events, reactions, and significance of this intervention for both the academic and the industrial re…

Defining and Operationalizing Appropriation for Science Learning

2014

The overarching goal of this paper is to contribute to our understanding of the interplay between students’ disciplinary engagement and their identity construction. The term appropriation, borrowed from scholars in linguistics and education, was chosen to capture this broader sense of productive learning that sits at the nexus of disciplinary engagement and identity. Appropriation implies productive learning including deep conceptual understanding, but it also involves a reflexive process of populating scientific discourse with personal intentions, purposes and tastes that allow a student to embody scientific discourse and concepts in a way that is authentic and personal. The core aim of th…
