Aim: The assessment of repeatability and reproducibility of retinal straylight measurements with the C-Quant straylight meter (Oculus AG, Germany) and the effect of patient’s age on the instrument performance are tested with a series of experiments. Methods: First, 20 eyes from 20 subjects (mean age 26.9 (SD 2.7) years, mean refractive error −1.34 (2.72) D) were examined with the C-Quant straylightmeter, taking 10 consecutive readings. Objective To study the distribution of refractive errors among adults of European descent. Design Population-based eye study in Germany with15 010 participants aged 35–74 years. Methods The study participants underwent a detailed ophthalmic examination according to a standardised protocol. Refractive error was determined by an automatic refraction device (Humphrey HARK 599) without cycloplegia. Definitions for the analysis were myopia +0.5 D, astigmatism >0.5 cylinder D and anisometropia >1.0 D difference in the spherical equivalent between the eyes. We tested the colour vision of 72 people with Down's syndrome using the Ishihara test and an anomaloscope. We found that 13 of the subjects, 6 males and 7 females, had defective colour vision according to Pickford's classification. In monocular vision 10 eyes were protan (five simple, three extreme and two deviant), one eye was simple deuteranomalous and the remaining eyes were normal: in binocular vision four of the subjects were protan (two simple and two deviant), two subjects were deutan (one simple and one deviant) and the rest were normal. Methods: An adaptive-optics system was used to correct ocular aberrations of cyclopleged eyes and then systematically introduce five levels of Seidel SA for a 7-mm diameter pupil: 0, ± 0.18, and ± 0.36 diopters (D) mm−2. Methods To assess visual function, an adaptive optics visual simulator was used to compensate volunteers' ocular aberrations and simulate the wavefront aberration patterns found in healthy and amblyopic eyes in 7 healthy individuals. ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To compare the effects on contrast sensitivity of the IntraLase femtosecond laser for flap creation (IntraLASIK) and standard LASIK for myopia. METHODS: Two hundred eyes of 100 consecutive patients underwent LASIK treatment using the VISX S2 laser system.
